Gophers at Bulldogs Oct 14 & 15 - No more well wishes

Re: Gophers at Bulldogs Oct 14 & 15 - No more well wishes

I don't think it's drooling over the performance this past weekend as it is optimism that the effort and consistency seems to be improved, and the realism that the Bulldogs aren't exactly the same team we saw last year. 3/4 games we played against them last year were tight, and I don't expect anything different this year. However, I am optimistic (not convinced) that this Gopher team will be able to together a more consistent effort than teams of years past. I'm guessing a split, with both games being tight.
That is all fine and good and I don't think you are one of the "droolers":D. But I have literally had people tell me that this is a Frozen Four caliber team. It's fine to wish that, but to honestly say that after what this program has been through the past 3+ seasons and a few wins against UBC and Sacred Heart is pretty ridiculous IMO.

Re: Gophers at Bulldogs Oct 14 & 15 - No more well wishes

I did find it odd that Gopher fans were cheering for UMD last year. I could never imagine cheering for State...or even worse...(gasp) Ohio St. I even saw some Gopher fans cheering for NoDak! It gave me goosebumps...

ANYWAY! Patterson will be the difference in the series. If he gets in the zone, it'll be a great series. If he gets into trouble early, UMD will win easy, and more than likely sweep. I'll predict a split though. The Gophers have a lot to prove this year, and this is their first step in proving all the doubters.

Friday- Minn 3, UMD 2
Saturday- Minn 2, UMD 4
I find it odd that Gopher fans cheered for us as well. Probably for several reasons, wanted to see us win our first title (we are still four behind them so not a real threat (yet)). It also helps that UMD is part of the UMN system. We are luckily not a MNSCU school.

2. MSU and Michigan have a heated rivalry for a long time. I highly doubt that any Michigan fan would cheer for an OSU team.

Would you cheer for Western, or Ferris if they were in the same position as UMD?

Oh, I wasn't disagreeing with you. I too have heard a few people who are putting the cart before the horse. I just hope that most Gopher fans are cautiously optimistic :)

Ah yes, more assumptions that all state universities suck.
I haven't liked what I've heard about how they can only give hockey coaches 1 to 2 year extensions. Seems to be a problem at MSU-M

That's a good point. I just figured UMD and Minnesota were bigger rivals. I mean, Western, Ferris, and Northern ALWAYS want to beat us. We don't see those games as "big rivalries", but they always bring their A game. And I suppose it would depend on who they're playing honestly. I don't really see it as a "CCHA vs. WCHA" kinda thing. I think I'd root for CC if they ever made it to the championship game...they've suffered long enough! I feel like gopher fans (and other WCHA teams) just wanted another WCHA team to win the title, no matter who had to win it in order for that to happen. The WCHA has been unofficially dubbed as the "premier" conference over the past couple of years, and not having their share of a national title (since 06, right?) was getting to a few people *Cough*Gopher fans*Cough*.

Let Michigan win a title? Hell no. Think: how Canada is when they only have one team left in the NHL playoffs. That sorta thing. tUMD/MN has been a friendly rivalry. It's different than the traditional U/State rivalries in other states.

Re: Gophers at Bulldogs Oct 14 & 15 - No more well wishes

Minnesota Hockey trumps all. That is why I will cheer for ANY team within our border above anyone else.

We were raised
With the stick
And a pair of blades
On the ice we cut our teeth
We took our knocks
In the penalty box
Our mother was the referee

This sport was here
Before we came
It will be here when we're gone
The game's in our blood
And our blood's in the game
Lay us down under
A frozen pond

We will fight to the end
We will stand and defend
Our flag flying high and free
We were born the child
Of the strong and Wild
In the State, the State of Hockey

A big blue line runs around our state
A line that can't be crossed
The day they try to take this game
Is the day the gloves come off

We will fight to the end
We will stand and defend
Our flag flying high and free
We were born the child
Of the strong and Wild
In the State, the State of Hockey.

I'm gonna hammerfalconpunch you for quoting that stupid *ing song.

That being said, I won't cheer for SCSU or Mankato. Ever. They just don't matter. Of course, there's always an exception to the rule: when they face UND/WI. Then I cheer for the refs. ;)

Really?

Love the song.

Shut up, Wave Boy.

And JDubbs: yes.

I went to tUMD, so that helps the friendly rivalry, but unless it's tUMD-MN week, or if their winning hurts the Gophers, I like to see them win.

I like to see them win when it doesn't hurt us too. Just wondering why you guys don't like that song? Maybe I'm out of touch, but Iove it.

There's more corniness in that song than the aftermath of me consuming 2 Chipotle burritos in one sitting.

I actually like the Gaelic structure and phrasing, it's the lyrics that make me gag.

The lyrics are cheesy but I love the song.

The UMD - UMTC rivalry is funny because when one team is good, the other is usually bad. IE last few hears and early/mid eighties.

Haha, I never said "jump on Michigan's bandwagon, and let them win a title". Just can't think of one team that I'd consider a "friendly rivalry". I just would have assumed UMD would be the closest rival Minnesota has to an in-state rival (don't think Mankato would be considered a bigger rival). It's not like I'm trying to start a "which state is better" battle...I was just saying it was strange to me to see so many gopher fans cheering for UMD and North Dakota in the Frozen Four. It'd be like seeing a Yankees fan cheer for the Red Sox (if the Yanks were eliminated) because they're in the same division...It'd be down right disgusting! :D

Anyway, back to the topic! I read an interesting article about Minnesota having 19 or so (can't remember specific numbers, & too lazy to look it up) underclassmen on the team. I know it was only Sacred Heart that they rolled over, but if they can build on that young talent, they may catapult Goldy back into the national spotlight.
