Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Heard the news at Ridder a short while back. I like power forwards...especially fast ones. :)

She will have to work on her speed to be effective in the WCHA but, a great kid from a great family. You won't find a nicer father.......I wish her all the best.

Was it a requirement to be from Finland to get player of the week honors? Good thing for Noora. Here's gophersports.com with video of Noora's performance.

I was at the first game and saw most of these defensive breakdowns where Noora was able to save the day. She's the real deal, no question!

I just hope the Goph's are able to tighten up their defensive play so she won't have to be so spectacular. I love to see aggressive D play but NOT at the expense of giving up unnecessary odd man rushes, especially lone breaks! Against good competition, goaltending is so important...

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Oh, great. The eve of the arrival of another powerful U of Minnie team, and then I read the MN Daily thing. 39-2. Ouch. Gophers hot, sweep the Bulldogs. Double-Ouch. New, fancy Finnish Phenom Goalie (sorry Dave) that no one can score on. Triple-Ouch.

Frankly, I would be surprised if the 1-3 Huskies even show up!!:o

Well, I know Caitlin Hogan will show up. And the Hirsch kid will show up.

It seemed that last year, the UofM-Huskies series was a bit more physical and chippy than in other years. A trend? Can the smallish SCSU squad get physical with the larger and above-average Gophers? Will Mark Johnson being gone for the year have any impact on this game?? [cheap shot at Badger-ville]

Look forward to seeing the usual band of outlaws known as Gopher Women's Hockey Fans. The only hope I have is that Crazy Dave has a sore throat.

Speaking of people showing up (or not), where are all those Badger fans who materialized while the team was making 4 straight championship games? Did Mark Johnson take the only internet card with him?

Look forward to seeing the usual band of outlaws known as Gopher Women's Hockey Fans.
I assume that means The Boomer will show up tomorrow? That alone is worth a trip and the price of admission.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Good starting time for Huskies game. First period played and 1-0 for Gophers. Huskies are playing pretty well. Two forwards giving aggressively preassure to Gopher's defence. Gophers has troubles to clear the puck out from own zone and can not make a play. Interesting to see how long Huskies can maintain preassure. Requires fresh legs all the time. Saves Huskies 13 Gophers 11. Noora between the pipes.

Huskies went out of gas sooner I expected. 4-0 to Gophers and 11 mins to go the second. 4-0 after two. Saves Huskies 26 Noora 20. You have talked here about penalties. Sure Gophers take silly ones. Too many on offensive zone due to hooking. Why to forecheck with stick when you have a clear advantage on speed and strength.

Final 4-0. Gophers dominated 1st of the 2nd. Otherwise a close game. Huskies forechecking was good and freezed Gopher's game. But Huskies could not bypass Noora.

Time to have a sleep now. Enjoy your Friday evening over there. Here it is Saturday.

Good start to the weekend for the Gophs. Noora was stellar again...as was needed for a couple of stretches. None that I would characterize as sustained, but the Huskies definitely had their moments...and chances, later in the 1st, and again in the 3rd, when with Noora, and a four goal cushion, the game was essentially over.

The Huskies will be determined, and tougher in the rematch I'm guessing...have to be wanting those first conference points badly.

Laura May had a great goal today...resulting from a great individual effort.

GO GOPHERS!

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

I thought Nixon made some nice stops for SCSU or the Gophs could have had a few more. Hate to waste a 3-on-0, but at least they got a quality shot out of it, unlike a 2-on-0 that went begging last year.

Both teams defensive play at times made it seem like they wanted to find out what their goalies could stop. Yes, the Husky fore check was strong, but it looked like the Gophers were trying to move a foam rubber puck out of their zone in the first (or maybe a hard rubber puck with foam rubber sticks.) Too much fumbling. Luckily, #41 does wonders to keep my blood pressure at a reasonable level.

Despite my grumbling, a lot to like in the Minnesota effort today. The first line continues to evolve. West shows up every contest, Francis does a ton of little things to help her team, and the ceiling for Erickson has to be very high. Beyond May's goal, she had a lot of quality scoring chances. When a player of her offensive talent keeps getting opportunities, the goals will come. The message to the team this season was that everybody needed to expand their contribution, and it looks like they took it to heart.

Nice to see the Boomer, but I have to give him a  for his pre-game wishes for ill health for Crazy Dave. Hopefully, the crazed one is back tomorrow in full voice.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Brooky and Arm, thanks for the report - very happy they won! I was at the mens' game tonight and they didn't do so well, but it was against a very good opponent.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Great goal by Francis to open the scoring but the following score by Jones was my favorite. She was being held, referee Storey was putting his hand up for the penalty, but Jones still got the shot off top shelf on the glove side. Minnesota never looked back.

West took a slightly ill advised penalty at the end of the second. She came out of the box early third, stayed on for a bit until the next whistle and then didn't skate again, staying firmly anchored leaning on the dasher in front of the Gopher bench.

I didn't really notice until I was certain that West was not playing but Blankenship wasn't playing either. I don't know if she missed the whole third or only the part where I noticed. She wasn't on the bench.

In attendance, Gigi again. Melanie again. Was that Allie Sanchez? And who was that sitting with Gigi? She was clearly an athlete, clearly a player, clearly not a former Gopher. She sat unrecognized while Gigi was chatting up passersby between periods. Vetter? There to see Noora?

Nice to see so many of last years seniors watching so many games this year.

A real nice game for the May/Kortum/Jones line this afternoon...also good to see Alyssa Grogan between the pipes again as well.

On to Madison.

Picking a favorite goal is a little like picking a favorite child. I do admit a personal fondness for those that send the water bottle flying such as that offered by Terra R. I was also glad to see a blueliner other than Schleper light the lamp, because they had so many near misses prior to Seeler's connection today.

Was that Allie Sanchez?
Yes, with her dad.

Great to see so many former Gophs and their families from a variety of classes. It is nice of you to support the program, plus you are missed around the rink when we don't get a chance to see you.

Playing the way we know #31 can play.

A recap of today's game, plus a venue where you can ask that question you've always wanted to put to a Gopher player or coach.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Anyone as (pleasantly) surprised as I am that the team is off to such a great start? I know it's very early, but really with the all the much-publicized player losses from last year, who would have thought? Congrats to the whole team for exceeding all expectations, and keep working hard to improve for each and every game.

P.S. It would sure be GREAT if they could kick some butt in Madison next weekend! :)

Yes and no. I'm not so much surprised by the record, but the quantity of offense has been surprising. We knew we'd be the favorite in every game except possibly UMD, but they lost more people than we did and the games thus far were on our ice.

I know it's very early, but really with the all the much-publicized player losses from last year, who would have thought?
We tend to focus on the losses, but once the puck drops, all that really matters is who do you have wearing skates and your uniform. It would be darn nice to have Schoullis this year, and not have her counted among the losses. Given that she is out, that makes us very vulnerable if the wrong forward gets knocked out of the lineup. Beyond that, we expected goaltending to be a strength. I knew #41 had a great reputation. But if she can keep playing like she has to date -- wow. Bozek seems to be cut from a similar cloth as Schleper, and I consider that a good thing. Jalosuo has stepped right in like she is accustomed to competing at this level, which I guess she is. Jones and May have taken the "we need to have people step up" message to heart, so it takes some pressure off of Kortum. Right now, she's doing great in the role asked of her. Downey hasn't looked out of place. Frischmann survived her baptism by fire last weekend.

Beyond the individual additions, this team seems a bit more like a team. Maybe that will change; it is still early. The question to be answered is how do they respond when faced with adversity? Rough times are bound to come, and given they have yet to trail this season, we have no idea how they will react. If they stay aggressive, I like their chances if reasonably healthy.

P.S. It would sure be GREAT if they could kick some butt in Madison next weekend! :)
The Badgers have surely not missed an opportunity to kick ours over the last few years. I'd hope that between them, the four captains of this year's squad have enough unpleasant cardinal & white memories to fuel a decent fire in Madison.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

ARM, I think you are spot on.

In addition, let me just add this.I think Katie Frischmann has looked really good at "D". One may overlook the fact that if she does not stand out, it actually means she is doing her job very well. Kind of like an umpire you don't notice in a baseball game, because the calls were all the right ones.

Another one who should be mentioned is Jenny Lura. She may well play a very important role on this team before the season is over. The easiest thing to do is be happy when things go well. From what I can see, she displays great "team " first attitude. She seems to celebrate the team's success. We are lucky to have 3 great, top rate "tenders" if you ask me.
