Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

I can't put any of the GA with Grogan in net on her shoulders. In each of the last two weekend series...

In last weekend's game she did make one miscue, I thought, when she went behind her net to handle the puck and couldn't get back in time for what then turned out to be an easy Syracuse goal. I didn't see last night's game so I don't know if any of the 5 GA were softies or not. Certainly the rest of the team has to take most of the responsibility for giving up 22 shots on net in the 3rd period - coach couldn't have been too happy about that. Whatever he said or whatever adjustments were made, it sure looks like the team got the message tonight.

What's the over / under for Shannon to start barking at the zebras? I'm going with 15:45 of the first...for $10.00.

:)

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

To me, that's more a nice surprise than it is attributable to the opponents thus far.
Maybe. But they did light up OSU in every meeting last year (at least 8 goals every game, 9+ GPG), so there could be some matchup issues there.

I thought the team tonight showed some real potential for good offensive production from a number of sources / lines.
Yes. On paper, the Erickson line could be very dangerous in any contest. Nice to see Sarah get going this weekend. Francis has typically finished stronger than she starts. West's long point streak last season points to her consistency. The 2nd is made up of people that have all been very good offensively in the past, now they have to gel as a unit. The PP slowed this weekend, but if we continue to get offensive contributions on occasion from the 3rd, I think the D will ignite a few rallies of their own.

As for the PK, the saying goes that your best penalty killer has to be your goaltender. That may hold the key in the short term.

Pregame skate?:p I don't have $10.

Gotta be happy with a sweep on the road to start the conference schedule...I am. :)

I hope Kelli and Alex can get back in the game very soon.

So many of those goals came from players not on the current roster, and or not suiting up this season...there's no way I could reconcile any matchup issues for this squad vs. the Buckeyes.

I don't think you'll need $10...sounds like a winning call.

I'm pretty sure #20 (Alex Zebro) did not return to the ice Saturday night. I'm guessing she could be out for the UMD series at least. Team's getting banged up early...hope to see that trend cease and desist.

I hope to see two efforts more akin to what we've seen in the 2nd game on each of the two previous weekends.

GO GOPHERS!

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Back to the goaltender discussion (unfortunately -- sorry). Brooky sort of spoke to it, but what's up with Alyssa? Three goals against vs. Syracuse and now 5 against OSU? And a save percentage sub-.900? Or is she just not getting the same defensive support as Noora? I'm not going to speculate on who will be in net next weekend but those are not pretty numbers. :(

I am a fan but not normally a "poster". Just can't stay quiet about this goaltender situation. Kim Hanlon must be rolling her eyes. I believe last year she had a couple of bad periods to start the season and was basically shelved for her senior season which had to be extremely disappointing for her.

Now we have Grogan struggling and she continues to gets starts. I have watched press conferences and read articles where Frost says the goalie position is up for grabs and each would be given a fair chance to compete. I don't see that happening so far.

If you go by last year and how Frost handled things, Grogan should be basically sitting the balance of this year. Why hasn't Lura been given a chance to compete?

Given Lura's record of the last 2 years I am having trouble understanding where Frost is going. Hopefully he is not on the same path as last year, where he totally screwed things up by arbitrarily putting Grogan ahead of Lura late in the year, breaking up the best tandem in the league. In my opinion both goalies should have played every other game right up to the final with the coach making the decision on who goes in the final. Had he done that I am sure we would have made to the the championship game

I think it is time to let Lura have her shot at competing for number one.

Given the number of shots and goals we are giving up we need to make sure we have the the absolute best goalies going for us.

I agree to the extent that Coach Frost said that all three goalies would get their opportunities, but we need to keep in mind that it's still very early and only 4 games have been played. We also don't get a chance to evaluate their skills everyday in practice, which no doubt also factors into his decision.

I believe Lura will get her shot, perhaps as early as this weekend. However I do think it's a bit premature to compare how last year played out to this year's 4 starts - there are a lot of games yet to be played.

I agree that the number of shots being given up makes the goalie decision that much more important, but on the other hand you can't blame the goalie for her teammates' defensive lapses. I'm sure we all agree that it's best to have "the absolute best goalies going for us" no matter how many shots are being given up.

In a month Raty will be number one.......

To athletic, to quick.

Frost is saying all the right things right now, but he knows Raty's a stud....

We all need to remember she won't be around for a few weeks in February for the Olympics. I think he will keep rotating just so he can keep Grogan ready. Lura will probably get a few games just to keep her fresh for when Raty is gone. I think she will miss the last UMD and St Cloud series and possibly Wisconsin.

I didn't like how things were handled last year, so I'm not sorry if changes are made. Before the first series last season, it was announced that each goalie would play two periods. IMO, that sends a message to your team that these games aren't expected to be that competitive, because in all honesty, we would never take such an approach against UMD or UW. So the team doesn't show up for the first game, the senior class in its entirety is particularly brutal, the goalie rotation plan is shelved w/o Hanlon even getting her full two periods, and we lose. Can't blame anyone for choosing not to repeat that.

I don't know that there is a way to handle the goalie situation that is 100% fair to everyone. Games could be used as a venue for goalies to "audition", but that may not be fair to the rest of the team. My understanding is that much of the competition is based on how they perform in practice. We don't have visibility to their performance, but then we don't get a vote anyway. When Hanlon came to this program, it was the staff's belief that she would be a career backup to Chartier. Hanlon worked hard in practice, earned playing time, and made the most of her opportunities up until her serious injury.

I like Kim Hanlon, Jenny Lura, and Alyssa Grogan. I've never met Noora Räty, but I expect I'll like her too. I wish they could all get as much playing time as they deserve, and everybody would be happy with the situation. But it isn't going to happen. There simply isn't enough net to go around. I've watched players over the years stuck on the 4th line, hardly ever getting meaningful ice time, knowing that they'd have been regulars had they chosen some other program. Usually their parents had a harder time with that than the student athletes did. Natalie Darwitz is one of the best centers in the world, but when she skated on a line with Krissy Wendell, she played wing. Playing a team sport means the individual has to sacrifice at times, and those sacrifices aren't always fair. I wish they were, but they aren't.

Habs addressed the timetable in this post...
Gophers will be followed here in Finland now. You have two local players in roster and Gophers is not anymore just a funny name amomg others. Noora and Mira will join national team from 30th Oct to 7th Nov for 4Nations in Finland. They will fly back on 8th Nov. Next time they are with national team is MLP Nations Cup in Germany from 3rd to 11th Jan 2010. And finally Olympics 31 Jan to 25th Feb. They will be back in Minnesota for first qualification round in NCAA. Team Finland is having Olympic pre camp in Colorado Springs from 31 Jan to 7th Feb.

We watched UMD go through something similar when Martin came into their program. Fans wondered why Schaublin didn't get equal opportunities, especially in that first championship game against Wisconsin. A year later, everyone knew why. After watching Räty for 5 minutes in a scrimmage, I fully understood why she was a part of this year's team.

Could anyone help me with Gophers Gold Zone? I have tried to watch video stream from Gophers site. Live video keeps loading and stream will not show up. I have Windows XP and tried to change all setttings according to FAQ found from Gold Zone. No help. I mailed technical support but they never replied. Should the live video stream work outside USA? Or is there some known way to configure some setting somewhere in XP?

Congrats to Sarah Erickson. A repeat, or similar performance from anyone in the "real" Maroon & Gold this weekend would be fine with me.

"In just two weeks, both of the offensive players of the week this year have come from Minnesota in Erickson and Chelsey Jones (vs. Syracuse, Oct. 4 & 6)."

With all of the pre-season emphasis being placed on defense, I don't think anyone could have predicted this would happen!

I don't know if this will help but when I first tried to watch live video streams from anywhere on the net, not just Gold Zone, but anywhere, I often could not get the stream to function while using Firefox. I installed an add-on which allows Firefox to mimic IE (called an IE Tab in the add-on menu) and that always worked. I suppose IE should also work.

However, this is no longer true, the streams now work just fine for me on Firefox.

For what it's worth, I am running XP SP3 and Firefox 3.0.6.

I had the same experience last year...the only assistance was a bunch of computer lingo online that you needed a degree in computer science/programming to understand...no humanoid available to speak to.

If you use a router you may want to disconnect it and see if that works...however, you will lose the protection that it otherwise provides but it's for a relatively short period of time and if the game(s) is important enough to you, well....
The draw back with No Zone was that you couldn't pay to view one game at a time...they wanted you to sign up for a subscription for 30 days, which was a good deal if you wanted to watch more than one game.

The good news is that they refunded my money but I would have much preferred to have seen the game. They also seemed totally clued out as to what the problem was and worse, they didn't seem to care.

Pretty much the same service as B2DeadTV. Handy services, (with severely anemic customer service) if and when they work.

Good luck.

Smart programmers have decided that the software checks regional settings. Date and time format has to be English (USA). I changed those on Win XP Control Panel and it rocks now. Seems that on weekend I have night shift for watching UMD series. We are 8 hours ahead.

In case you experience any problems with the live feed on Friday night, the game is also being webcast via USCHO:

And though the time is still not good for you, at least Saturday's game starts 3 hours earlier.
