Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Apparently we are the only team committing any transgressions.:(

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Finally a PP chance our way; let's take advantage.

Twins are up 2-1 in the 8th.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Huge goal by Sarah E.

Both Minnesota teams enjoy 2-run leads (6-4 Gophs, 3-1 Twins)

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

OSU adds an EN goal but UM holds on for 6-5 win.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

The story of Friday's game was the Gophers' ability to convert turnovers into unassisted goals. Four, count 'em, four. There certainly are some snipers on this Gopher team; we saw some very nice top shelf shots. Memo to the rest of the league: Playing for a shootout against this club would appear to be a very bad idea.

The Buckeye turnovers probably stemmed from the fact we're very early in the season. Naturally good pressure from the Gophers played a role as well. But from an OSU point of view, it was unfortunate to see an otherwise strong effort negated by the solo goals. The Buckeyes carried the play for a good portion of the game, particularly in the third period.

The rematch should be very entertaining, even if it gives the coaches a gray hair or two.;)

Grogan had 40 shots on her? When was the last time Minnesota gave up 40 shots?

Not sure but the article on the U of M website said Grogan had 39 shots and this was the most she's faced in her career as a Gopher. Hope it stays that way!

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Congrats to Becky Kortum on her first goal as a Gopher.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

From the blog, thought this was kinda cute.....

"On the bus driving over here, the busdriver, Marvin told the team he wanted to witness a 6-0 win tonight. His prediction, so far is on pace."

expectations being set by the bus driver. good stuff.

Also from the game blog:

Minnesota has been playing cleaner in its own zone and hadn't allowed a shot on goal in the first seven minutes of the game.
Pretty accurate as far as I'm seeing via the webstream. Looks like the best effort to date in the D zone thru the first two periods.

The Gophers have to feel pretty confident with #41 backing them up, I would think. She looks to be making her case for #1 at the position. She's very quick up & down and side to side. I don't think we'll see many 5 hole goals with Noora.

I haven't notice this linked before -- an article on Kelli Blankenship.

Gophersports recap of Saturday's game.

It was a career high for Erickson and her first career hat trick as a Golden Gopher.
Räty tallied two assists in the game. It’s the first time a Gopher goalie has recorded two assists in one game, let alone two in one season.
Congrats to Sarah and Noora on their personal milestones, and most importantly, to the team on a big win.:)

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Sorry, I'm just catching up on the weekend folks. Had to deal with Homecoming activities on Friday night and today up at the U. (BTW, Gophers 35, Purdue 20. :D )

Congrats to Sarah E. on the trick and to the team as a whole on the sweep. It's always sweet to get four points in Columbus. (Anyone know if they have D.Q. there, or does the team have to wait 'til they're home tomorrow? ;) )

Not thrilled with giving up 4 man-advantage goals on Friday (3 PP and one with OSU's goaltender pulled). Saturday was better with the team only giving up 1 goal on 6 PK opportunities, but we're still at only a 72.7% kill rate four games in. It has got to improve, particularly against next week's opponent.

Back to the goaltender discussion (unfortunately -- sorry). Brooky sort of spoke to it, but what's up with Alyssa? Three goals against vs. Syracuse and now 5 against OSU? And a save percentage sub-.900? Or is she just not getting the same defensive support as Noora? I'm not going to speculate on who will be in net next weekend but those are not pretty numbers. :(

Now, on a total tangent -- Is the team unveiling their 2009 WCHA regular season championship banner next week? ;) :D

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Decided to add another thought while I'm still on (though I need sleep -- badly)...

Four games in, the team has scored 20 goals. That's five per game on average. Is this a surprise, or does this just speak to the competition faced in those first two weekends?

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Always nice when your goalie can have more assists in a game than goals against. Noora seems to be the real deal. Hopefully she won't be missed to bad come Olympic time.

I can't put any of the GA with Grogan in net on her shoulders. In each of the last two weekend series, the Gophers have played much better in the 2nd game...particularly in their own zone. Noora has benefited from that I would say...but she's due large credit on her own with her performances. The less proficient play in their D zone in each of the openers has cost Alyssa some, stats wise I'd say. I would say Alyssa has not been as sharp as she was for the whole of 2008-2009. A level difficult to sustain.

To me, that's more a nice surprise than it is attributable to the opponents thus far. Nice surprise. I thought the team tonight showed some real potential for good offensive production from a number of sources / lines. A bigger test is coming up next weekend at Ridder...we all know.

What's the over / under for Shannon to start barking at the zebras? I'm going with 15:45 of the first...for $10.00.
