Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Lura and Grogan have already both proven themselves to be "legitimate starting goalies" and there never should have been a third brought into the mix in my opinion, but it is what it is. All they needed was a solid "third" goalie.
At the time Räty signed, I was surprised and would have been more likely to agree with you. But if one holds tightly to that theory, then maybe Grogan is never recruited in the first place, because they already had two established goalies.

In the early days of the program, two goalies was the norm. Then came the games where an extra forward had to don the goalie gear, and two suddenly looked like one too few. So the team added an emergency goalie to the roster, but I think 2007 drove home the point that the emergency goalie can only help if you are ready to entrust your season to her.

Goalie health has been a factor at some point in the postseason in each of the last four years. So I guess I've come around to Frost's way of thinking. Bring in people who can make the team better.

Having watched Räty, I think that she can, if not directly, then indirectly through increased competition. Jessie Vetter emerged out of a 3-goalie rotation, and that seemed to work out okay. Were people unhappy along the way? Sure. In hindsight, does that mean she should never have been recruited by Wisconsin in the first place? When she arrived in Madison, she joined a junior and a sophomore. I think history may have played out differently had Johnson passed her over for someone who was merely solid.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

How do you know that Lura or Grogan are not #1? Just because Raty is the goalie for Finland does not make her the best. She also has to prove herself. The season is early. I do know one thing... When it comes to UMD I want Lura in the net.

Well - I have followed the discussion since Noora was evaluating alternatives. So many teams showed interest at early stages. All the time most of you have protected local goalies. I understand it only because you have not seen froreing ones in action. I mean you have been positive for locals and less positive for foreigners. My so called ranking was just a throw to see how locals are again protected. Seemed to be so. At the end of season we will see who is #1 and ready for NCAA playoffs. In the meanwhile equal attitude for all Gopher goalies.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

In that case I have to clarify my foreigner thinking in two. North Americans are local to me. Europeans non local. Canadiens are not local for you. Understood.

Lura is a foreigner, not a local.

I would like to think that I am a pro Gopher fan.

In the case of Gopher hockey, the term "local" is even more selective. To most, "local" means "from the state of Minnesota". In men's hockey, this attitude is even more pronounced. There have been coaches of the men's team who coached the Gophers for many years and only recruited players from the state.

I think the typical Gopher women's hockey fan is fairly liberal about where any individual player is from. In-state players start out with an advantage in that some of us have watched these kids play high school hockey and are already familiar with them. We heard about Natalie Darwitz from the time she was in 7th grade. Players like La Toya Clarke and Bobbi Ross became some of the more popular players not because as Canadians they were viewed as local, but because they were hard-working players that were fun to watch, and most importantly, good people.

Jenny Lura has been a Gopher for two years. As such, we feel loyalty towards her. Noora has only been a Gopher for a few weeks, so we are still getting to know her. In time, she will enjoy the same level of support, but it doesn't always happen immediately.

MN. Fan wants to seen Lura in net against UMD. Personally, I want to see the goalie who gives the team the best chance to win, whomever that may be.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Noticeable improvement from the opener on Friday to the Sunday game vs. Syracuse as Gopher fans have mentioned. An early season opportunity presents itself...with the Badger split in conference play last weekend...the impending Bulldog forfeiture of a minimum 2 pts. to the Huskies, Gopher results in Columbus become potentially significant at the very least. I suspect it's going to be a tough series with the Buckeyes. Minnesota will need excellent goaltending from whoever gets the call this weekend, and continued improvement overall. I don't honestly think I'd predict anything better than a split if I were to make a prediction. Every WCHA point a team can secure this season will be large in the race. A chance for an early lead (conference) would be a good chance to take advantage of.

GO GOPHERS!

One game at a time. And too early to scoreboard watch. This year, it is tough to predict who will be your competition in the standings in another 4 months.

Is this your prediction for their weekend?:)
Yes.

Too early? Well maybe, could depend on a fans level of obsession...or preoccupation with the WCHA regular season race. I tend to operate under an assumption every team in the conference is your competition in the standings from start to finish, which could turn out to be truer this season than some / most prior seasons. It is certainly difficult to predict the WCHA this season. That's the source of my personal preoccupation with points lost by various WCHA opponents, and of course, points accumulated by others, in such a constant mode during the season.

For the team...one game at a time, absolutely.

I think I'm going to spring for the webstream this weekend...hope for proper operation.

What a rotten break for Decker and the Badgers...first weekend.

I was going to post the same. I hate to see anyone get seriously injured, and wish the best to Ms. Decker for a complete recovery.

Going to make the trip to Buckeye land. I think the key to success for MN will be staying out of the box, and scoring on the power play. I personally think the power play will be better than I thought it would be . I like the involvement of all 5 players on the ice that was demonstrated last weekend. I think the gophers can bring atleast two good units to the player advantage. I predict some pretty goals and some gritty goals. Looking forward to a fun trip.

So far it's been great. I doubt it stays anywhere near 37.5%, just like I'm hopeful that the PK improves on their current 77.8%. Maybe because of the vast amount of turnover, the PP got extra emphasis the first couple weeks. We'll learn more over the next two weekends.

Do you know if #7 is expected back? We'll need to get her and #4 involved in the scoring column before long. Have a good trip and cheer loud.

Gophers coaching will go on with a 2 goalie rotation. 3rd goalie will not get a start. This was informed on Wednesday to goalies. We will see it next weekend how it goes.

The Daily provides my answer:
Another question mark for the Gophers is senior forward Kelli Blankenship , who will remain day-to-day after suffering a concussion during last Friday’s game.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

OSU should give the Gophers more of a game this weekend then last years romps.

With Spooner, Theut, McIntosh with a year under there belt and Langan, Timunninen and Semenza as solid freshmen plus the possibility of Knapp adding some level of stability in net they could/should be more competitive.
If Reilly isn't in the line-up that will really hurt the Bucks.
Will they split? maybe.........

Your thoughts......
