Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010
In the early days of the program, two goalies was the norm. Then came the games where an extra forward had to don the goalie gear, and two suddenly looked like one too few. So the team added an emergency goalie to the roster, but I think 2007 drove home the point that the emergency goalie can only help if you are ready to entrust your season to her.
Goalie health has been a factor at some point in the postseason in each of the last four years. So I guess I've come around to Frost's way of thinking. Bring in people who can make the team better.
Having watched Räty, I think that she can, if not directly, then indirectly through increased competition. Jessie Vetter emerged out of a 3-goalie rotation, and that seemed to work out okay. Were people unhappy along the way? Sure. In hindsight, does that mean she should never have been recruited by Wisconsin in the first place? When she arrived in Madison, she joined a junior and a sophomore. I think history may have played out differently had Johnson passed her over for someone who was merely solid.
At the time Räty signed, I was surprised and would have been more likely to agree with you. But if one holds tightly to that theory, then maybe Grogan is never recruited in the first place, because they already had two established goalies.Lura and Grogan have already both proven themselves to be "legitimate starting goalies" and there never should have been a third brought into the mix in my opinion, but it is what it is. All they needed was a solid "third" goalie.
