I believe it is true that while we remember the forwards by the good plays that they make, on D the "whoops" moments are what really stand out. My impressions are that Frischmann has looked most comfortable in space -- carrying the puck out of the zone, moving it ahead, backchecking, defending the rush, playing the point in the offensive zone, etc. The staff looked to limit her shifts early in Game 2 of the UMD series when the Bulldog forecheck was causing her some problems (she wasn't alone in that regard.) Obviously, we're going to need her on the blue line; Jalosuo's absence on Sunday and Zebro's injury leaves us with only 5 D including Katie.I think Katie Frischmann has looked really good at "D". One may overlook the fact that if she does not stand out, it actually means she is doing her job very well.
This is such an important point that so often goes unrecognized. No team wins a championship w/o players being willing to accept roles that they would never choose. Last year's Gopher team was the deepest in program history; it also seemed to be one of the least happy ones, because I heard more stories of people who were not satisfied with the amount of ice time they received or how they were being used. Ironically, I never heard either of the two people who played the very least complain at all. I'm glad Kim Hanlon was recognized with the GWH award, because she truly had to accept a role where she placed the team far ahead of herself.Another one who should be mentioned is Jenny Lura. She may well play a very important role on this team before the season is over. The easiest thing to do is be happy when things go well. From what I can see, she displays great "team " first attitude. She seems to celebrate the team's success. We are lucky to have 3 great, top rate "tenders" if you ask me.
UW doesn't quite have their full lineup. I realize you mean in terms of 4 Nations impact, but they have been w/o Decker and the Kelters. On our side, I haven't heard if Zebro is close to returning or not. Jalosuo and Räty miss Sunday, one other player is a definite "out", and we have at least one other question mark. The NFL has their "probable"/"questionable" lingo, while the Gophers tend to favor "day to day".As I recall reading we will be missing two key cogs on Sunday, whereas Wisconsin will have the full lineup available...
Yes...lapses, and or miscues in the D zone have definitely been costly when playing the Badgers the last several seasons. Heck, same for turnovers in the neutral zone. Minnesota will need to all but eliminate those miscues. I will say thus far those miscues have been isolated somewhat to a relatively few instances in each game...and of limited duration compared to previous Gopher teams tending to get bottled up semi regularly. Probably the most dangerous group of forwards Minnesota has faced yet. Great goaltending and smart play in their own end are pretty crucial. Not to state the obvious, but I think the team will have to extremely sharp in all phases of the game to take two this weekend. If they are and get the job done, that would be huge!
Look forward to seeing the usual band of outlaws known as Gopher Women's Hockey Fans. The only hope I have is that Crazy Dave has a sore throat.
Sorry I missed the weekend. ARM -- you apparently didn't get the message that I was going to be out-of-town (no, Boomer, I was not ill). My parents hauled me along to go see my brother in Detroit. And unfortunately, having just taken 5 days off from work, I cannot turn around and go back to Madison this coming weekend. I'll have to see the new road jerseys later.Nice to see the Boomer, but I have to give him a for his pre-game wishes for ill health for Crazy Dave. Hopefully, the crazed one is back tomorrow in full voice.
I fully concur. I'm very intrigued by the matchup this coming weekend, with Wisconsin having lost 3 conference games already to teams without "University of Minnesota" in their name. In two of those cases, Wisconsin's offense was stymied and laid the goose egg. In the other, they dug themselves a hole, clawed their way out to tie it, but gave up a bad D-zone turnover that was converted to an unassisted game-winner.Sure hope that this doesn't turn out to be the weekend when Wisconsin breaks out of their early season "slump"!

I think the big thing with Wisconsin is that they are only 1-for-33 on the power play. Ouch. But the Badgers one bright spot is that they are a perfect 29-for-29 on the shorthanded kill. If the Gophers can keep the Badger PP in check while breaking through themselves, it will be a good weekend for the maroon & gold.
Finally, the silly stat of the night... 4 Gophers -- West, Erickson, Jones and May -- are in the top 11 for points scored in WCHA league play, with 10, 9, 6 and 6, respectively. Chelsey and Laura are wonderful surprises to that list. I just can't frown with numbers like that.
Why don't we have a gander.Speaking of Laura May, there is a very nice action photo of her on the cover of the Oct 22 issue of " Lets Play Hockey" weekly publication
Can the WCHA give Raty the ROTY award now or do they actually have to wait until the year is over before they present it to her?
Yes, both Noora Räty and defenseman Mira Jalosuo will miss a number of games as described in Habs post:Speaking of Raty isn't she going to be gone over the Olympics? How long (how many games) will she miss for the Gophers? Any other players going to miss time?
Gophers will be followed here in Finland now. You have two local players in roster and Gophers is not anymore just a funny name amomg others. Noora and Mira will join national team from 30th Oct to 7th Nov for 4Nations in Finland. They will fly back on 8th Nov. Next time they are with national team is MLP Nations Cup in Germany from 3rd to 11th Jan 2010. And finally Olympics 31 Jan to 25th Feb. They will be back in Minnesota for first qualification round in NCAA. Team Finland is having Olympic pre camp in Colorado Springs from 31 Jan to 7th Feb.

I worry about the fatique of all that travel and games on top of freshman year at school. It makes a strong first half extra important, because we could get a little thin if injuries/illness strike in February.Wow, 3 times? Coach has some juggling to do.
