Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Good time for a little break from WCHA play I'd say. Mend those bumps & bruises...recharge the batteries a little. Then on to All Seasons.

Meanwhile...current 3rd & 4th place teams could be jumpin' into the fray.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Aside from the actual equipment, confidence is the biggest asset for goaltenders.

If you have two quality goaltenders and both are playing well it is a cinch to maintain the confidence level of them both.

If you have three quality goaltenders and one of them advances to a position of preeminence, that is probably good for the team. But probably not so good for the confidence of the other two goalies.

In this case such a goalie is not mentally ready to face competition in order to be number one choise between the pipes. Mentally not ready affects on your performance. Goalie can not be afraid or worried how he / she is doing. This way every single shot is mentally tough. And finally such a goalie never reaches the steady level required. Confidence is mostly a built in gift and partly increased by solid game perfomances.

From the WCHA thread...
Looking ahead to this weekends action:

Minnesota @ Minnesota State

Gophers need to shake off their last series. I'm sure they've been working on just that.
Road trip time. Gotta stop by Pagliai's in downtown Mankato for some 'zza before Friday night's game. :D

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

I'll be there. Can't stay for Saturday's game, though... Got some football back at "The Bank".

Here are the Gopher game notes.

And for anyone interested in the opposing point of view, here are the brief Maverick game notes.

Sure hope to see the Gophers rebound this weekend, starting with tonight's game. As we've seen all season, most recently with the Wayne State-Wisconsin game, upsets are happening all over the place this year, and happening with such frequency that you can no longer call any one game result an upset.

You'd still have to consider the Gophers favorites in this one, but this year you just never know what's going to happen - especially true, it seems, when one of more WCHA team is involved.

Cat's outta the bag eh. Looks like a very good group. :)

I've only seen the local girl play. Thought I saw Turgeon listed at 5'10" elsewhere.

I took a look at the article again, and it has Turgeon listed as 5'10". Go figure.

Agree with you on the appearances. I'll be very interested in seeing how they do. Glad to have them aboard. :)

No Joy?

Looks like the MSU vs UMN is only available on audio tonight on Gold Zone. Nothing on Big Ten network.

Anyone have other suggestions (short of driving down tonight?

We'll be there Saturday for sure!

Well, you could fly down by plane or chopper.:p

Perhaps you could try this link from MSU and see what coverage they are providing at game time:

I got to it via a tab that said "Women's Hockey - Live Video Broadcast", so it is worth a shot.

Pretty decent game. Driving was lousy, though. Only good thing about the drive was that it wasn't 15 degrees cooler outside.

Gophers looked pretty flat in the first 5 minutes of the game. :( Possible causes include (1) being without Terra Rasmussen (late scratch due to illness); (2) not playing last week; (3) carryover form the Wisconsin series. But they weathered the storm, got back on track a bit when MSU got called for the first of their 11 penalties, and took a scoreless tie into the locker room at the first intermission. :o

The Gophers still couldn't solve Alli Altmann through the first ten minutes of Period 2 (despite two more PP opportunities), but finally they got on the board with a little nifty passing between Kelli B. and Westy. :D I think Kelli was actually trying to get it back to West one more time, but it went through Altmann's five hole and into the net. :p

Anne Schlepper added a rocket just under the crossbar on a 5-on-3 opportunity a few minutes later, and Westy tacked on her seventh goal of the season on a nice little mini-break with under a minute left in the second period.

An insurance goal by Erickson in the third completed the Gopher scoring.

Westy took a beating and gave a beating. She was on the receiving end of an illegal elbow in the second period and a big body check in the third period (though the MSU player called for the check took the worst of the collision on that one). But Westy also made her own way to the sin bin twice in the third period after a roughing call early on and then charging the goaltender later.

Great goaltending by Noora Räty. She did a fantastic job keeping the game scoreless when the Gophers were having trouble getting the puck by Altmann early on. She also flashed her quick glove throughout the game, leaving the one Maverick fan sitting by me shaking his head.

Lot of calls. According to the box score on CollegeHockeyStats.net, there were 19 penalties called, but I also think they missed one (Megan Bozek actually got a double minor late in the game, not just one). Most of the early calls were on MSU, but the refs evened it up a bit later on.

Good game. Here are the Gopher game notes. I'll be watching the MSU video feed tomorrow when I get home from Gopher football. :)
