Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010
Pretty decent game. Driving was lousy, though. Only good thing about the drive was that it wasn't 15 degrees cooler outside.
Gophers looked pretty flat in the first 5 minutes of the game.
Possible causes include (1) being without Terra Rasmussen (late scratch due to illness); (2) not playing last week; (3) carryover form the Wisconsin series. But they weathered the storm, got back on track a bit when MSU got called for the first of their 11 penalties, and took a scoreless tie into the locker room at the first intermission.
The Gophers still couldn't solve Alli Altmann through the first ten minutes of Period 2 (despite two more PP opportunities), but finally they got on the board with a little nifty passing between Kelli B. and Westy.
I think Kelli was actually trying to get it back to West one more time, but it went through Altmann's five hole and into the net.
Anne Schlepper added a rocket just under the crossbar on a 5-on-3 opportunity a few minutes later, and Westy tacked on her seventh goal of the season on a nice little mini-break with under a minute left in the second period.
An insurance goal by Erickson in the third completed the Gopher scoring.
Westy took a beating and gave a beating. She was on the receiving end of an illegal elbow in the second period and a big body check in the third period (though the MSU player called for the check took the worst of the collision on that one). But Westy also made her own way to the sin bin twice in the third period after a roughing call early on and then charging the goaltender later.
Great goaltending by Noora Räty. She did a fantastic job keeping the game scoreless when the Gophers were having trouble getting the puck by Altmann early on. She also flashed her quick glove throughout the game, leaving the one Maverick fan sitting by me shaking his head.
Lot of calls. According to the
box score on CollegeHockeyStats.net, there were 19 penalties called, but I also think they missed one (Megan Bozek actually got a
double minor late in the game, not just one). Most of the early calls were on MSU, but the refs evened it up a bit later on.
Good game. Here are the
Gopher game notes. I'll be watching the MSU video feed tomorrow when I get home from Gopher football.
