Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Just got back from seeing the mens' team lose (again). When I opened up the forum and saw the Harvard thread near the top, I knew it wouldn't be good news.

Sounds like it was fairly even but the Gophers may have not played their best game?

I'm watching.

The live announcers are interesting. Thuggish? Not dirty but close to it?

But now they are talking about Harvard playing a physical brand of hockey and really taking it to the Gophers.

I would have to say that of all the announcers so far, Harvard announcers are by far the worse.

I watched the webstream. It was better quality video than most I have seen but it was still a webstream. Any impressions I have need to include that as a qualification.

But, my impression is that the Harvard goalie played exceptionally well. As with any shutout, you have to get lucky sometimes and sometimes the puck has to hit you. I don't wish to imply that she was "lucky" as luck is the residue of design. I thought she played well. I thought the puck hit her a couple of times and I thought there were a couple of rebounds that just eluded Gopher skaters.

Harvard is good, make no mistake, their win was no fluke. It was a good, high quality, high speed game between two top 10 teams.

From what I could tell on webstream anyway.

The video was better than most. The announcers were at least familiar with hockey which was good. They exhibited a strong home team bias which I thought was expectable even as I disagreed with many of their comments.

Two thoughts from a Harvard fan who's hoping for a win today to balance Minnesota's sweep last year:

1. It's great to see two teams as fast as these go at it -- the recent H-UNH game was similarly memorable -- but it's hard to imagine an entire season of games in which the players skate this hard, dive so often to block shots, etc. Do most Western opponents try to skate with the Gophers, or do they tend to turtle up as H was forced to do in the early going when Minnesota was dominating completely?

2. We appreciate it that none of you on this thread has pointed out that after last year's games H added four Minnesotans to the squad and was often skating five Minnesotans at the same time yesterday....

1. My take is that whenever you have two very good, evenly matched teams (whether East or West - doesn't matter) going against each other, your opponent will at times put you on the defensive and you are forced to play good, sound defense. That means everyone on the ice, not just the two D and the goalie. I'm not sure what you mean exactly by "turtle up" but I assume this means going into a temporary shell or sorts? Anyway, love the phrase! :)

2. Re: the Minnesotans, glad to hear they are doing well and we of course wish them the very best. You're probably aware that you've got another very good one coming your way next year?

Well...I'll be tuning in again today with hopes for a different outcome. Time to bounce back with a strong 60 minutes Minnesota...LET'S GO GOPHERS!

Yeah, I thought you were a little off your game last night. When you're ready pregame, you're usually posting something like, "Here's your CRIMSON! Crimson! Crimson!" I guess that doesn't quite have the same ring to it.:p

Are we getting whooped as bad on video as we are on livestats?:(

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

I've lost the video completely...:(
Seems a pretty common occurrence with these web-based productions. They are a professional production, but there's a lot of variation in what that means.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Gophers being outplayed badly...generating virtually no offense at all.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Minnesota showing some life in the closing minutes of the 2nd. Still scoreless. Gophers HAVE to find a way to put something behind Kessler.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Video worked good for the bulk of the 2nd for me. For no video at all I can only suggest closing and then reloading 'til it hopefully starts operating again.
