Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Gophers win today 2-0. Box score

By holding Clarkson scoreless on the weekend, the Gophers' shutout streak is at 176:57, not allowing a goal since the 3:03 mark of the first period in the second game vs. Bemidji last weekend. This is after having a 196:20 shutout streak earlier this season (including full-game shutouts of UMD and twice vs. SCSU). :D

Minnesota is scoring 3.69 goals per game this season. That is more than a goal-per-game off of last season's average (4.95). But the Gophers are also giving up fewer goals per game (1.56 this season vs. 1.73 last season). So the loss of that offensive punch hasn't hurt as much. ;)

Here is the link to the post-game notes from today's game. (BTW -- I swear that I calculated the shutout streak times by hand and didn't copy them from the post-game notes. ;) :p )

(BTW -- I didn't know the 176:57 was noted in the game notes until after I had written it above. ;) :p )
While you're doing research, see if you can find out what the Gopher record is for a scoreless streak by an individual goalie.;) The team record is 268:40 performed between Nov 30 thru Dec 8, 2008. That was split between goalies, so I don't know if one of them had the longest streak, or if that occurred in a season such as 1998-99 when the team had 14 shutouts.

So, first, the 196:21 streak earlier this year was two goalies as well, since Alyssa played the second game against SCSU. Noora's personal streak during that stretch was 136:21.

The 268:40 streak was two seasons ago, and if you include the prior game and the latter game where the streak started and ended, it was from 11/25/07 (vs. UND) through 1/5/08 (at Wayne State). Jenny Lura contributed 122:18 and Kim Hanlon had the other 146:22.

But since the streak started with Jenny in net, we need to add the time from Kim's prior game to her personal total -- another 23:57 for a total of 170:19. And since the streak ended with Kim in net, we need to add the time from Jenny's next start to her total -- another 5:25 for a total of 127:43.

Even so, Noora's current streak has just eclipsed Kim's (by 6 minutes 38 seconds) and is still active. Quite impressive.

CollegeHockeyStats.net doesn't go back to '98-'99, so I can't run those numbers. :o If anyone has the box scores, I'm willing to look through them. ;)

And I have way too much time on my hands. :o

This may have to be background activity. For example, I just found a streak of 173:40 by Brenda Reinen from 11/26/2004 thru 1/22/2005. It gets tricky when multiple goalies are splitting time, because it doesn't jump out of the results with a bunch of zeros.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Goalie scoreless streak discussion continued ...

Jody Horak had 33:43 of scoreless goaltending at the end of a game with Findlay on 10/13/2002. She next played two scoreless periods in St. Cloud on 10/18 for 40 minutes more. The next day she opened Ridder Arena with a 60-minute shutout. Her next game was another 60-minute shutout on 10/25 versus the Buckeyes. Wisconsin scored on her on 11/1, but not until late in the third, so she adds another 54:19. So I think the total is 33:43 + 40:00 + 60:00 + 60:00 + 54:13 = 249:02.

Noora still has work to do to claim this record, if it is in fact even recognized as such in the Gopher record books.

Just to confirm, it was 54:19 (not 54:13) in the Wisconsin game. But you also have a carrying error... the total is 248:02.

Agreed on the latter comment -- Noora would need another full game shutout plus 11:05 after that to tie it.

We've had some great goaltending in the program's 12 years. First Erica Killewald (backed up by Crystal Nicholas for the first two seasons), then the tandem of Jody Horak and Brenda Reinen, and now Räty, Lura, and Grogan are keeping the red light behind them from being lit.

Nah, I added 3+4+1 and got 9; that's not a carrying error, just a failure to master addition at its simplest.:o

And we still don't know that is the actual mark to shoot at.

I think Nicholas was around for seasons 2 and 3 of Killewald's run. Sara Harms was the other goalie in year one, and holds the mark for lowest GAA. And of course Hanlon and Chartier show up all over the all-time lists as well.

For all those interested in attending Saturday's game against Harvard in Boston, There is a conflict in times listed. Both school's websites and the ECAA site have the correct time - 4:00 pm. College Hockey Stats and USCHO incorrectly list the start time as 7pm.

Verified by Harvard's coaching staff.

Still can't get over that save. I love the overhead.
I'm glad someone was able to get it on YouTube. After hearing about it, now I've had the chance to see it. And taz, you're correct -- the overhead helps.

However, something that I've noticed is Noora repeatedly losing her paddle. While I can understand dropping it when sprawling (such as in the video), there have been several other times when she has lost her stick in tight traffic but not in a sprawling situation. Anyone have any insight or thoughts about this?

No insights. Things I think may contribute to that ... she's not very big, she's very active with her stick, and I think she concentrates on the puck more than she does on her stick. If there is a fundamental problem, I trust that Coach Johnson and the rest of the staff will work with her on it. In the meantime, I'll judge her by her results.:)

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

That save was un-freakin'-believable!! Amazing!! I keep watching it over and over. My god, and she's only a freshman. We'll have to face her for THREE MORE YEARS. Good for the Goofs. Bad for the rest.

Question- I heard the announcer pronounce her last name as "Ra-too"? Is that correct?

Noora is left handed. That is the reason why her glove is very quick. She holds it naturally. The negative effect is that her stick play is done from left. Not from right. Her slapshot is very powerful from right. So the weaker hand holds the club. At the age of 12 goalie coaches had discussions in order to change the glove hands. Goal was to utilize strong right side puck handling. But they decided to go with quick hands. They knew that stick play from wrong side would be acceptable later. You should see her handling the puck from right. That combined to quick hands would be a perfect package.
