Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Did anybody see that "football" game they had during halftime of the Vikes, where the mascots were playing some youth team? The guy in the Goldy costume was just mowing over people. Coach Brewster should either get him on the varsity, or see about scheduling that youth team next season.

“A lot of the top teams … people are just getting knocked off, and if we don’t show up, we’ll be one of those teams too,” Frost said.

Sums the whole year up pretty well, I'd say. There's a whole lot of teams that have the capability of knocking off anyone, on any given night. That certainly includes everyone in the WCHA.

Yep, Gophers have one conference opponent to go in the first round. I suspect things are gonna get tougher still the second time around the WCHA.

Turning to some NC thoughts for the moment, if we take a look in the "2009-2010 Polls thread" it surely appears Minnesota has something to prove in the minds of fans. I don't know diddly about Clarkson, but obviously the Gophs need to show up both nights, for 60 minutes...or more. The two teams appear to be fairly close in both PP & PK if I'm reading stats correctly. Close in PP goals as well. Should be a great series.

It would be a real nice weekend to see some balanced production...a decrease in some unnecessary infractions too.

Still doesn't solve the offensive line problems.

Is the band scheduled to be there both games this weekend? My kids love the band.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

The band is supposed to be there Saturday, but I don't believe on Friday. Hope that helps.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

The athletic pep band schedules are posted here.

None of the three bands have women's hockey on their schedule this weekend.
According to that, the women's athletics band was supposed to play at the BSU series but had a conflict. Maybe they are doing Sat. as a make-up game?

As the resident GWH band geek, let me see if I can chime in here with some comments...

A large majority of the members of all three pep bands come from this marching band. That said, this past weekend (Bemidji State series) was the weekend of the marching band's annual Indoor Concerts at Northrop Auditorium (and if you've never been to one, then booooo on you  ). With a Friday night dress rehearsal and then the first of the concerts on Saturday night, none of the pep bands were available for any sport. This happens every year on one of the weekends in November or early December when there isn't a home football game, and it can't be avoided. :(

As usual, the Alumni Band was asked to cover a couple events in the varsity bands' places. But we usually have a small turnout for such events. Given that we draw the best for the men's sports (no surprise there) and that those are the events athletics would prefer to have us cover (again, no surprise), we were at the men's hockey games against UMD.

For Thanksgiving weekend, none of the three pep bands are scheduled to cover the Gopher volleyball matches either but student volunteers will be covering those since they are the last matches of the regular season. Still, the volunteer signups were so low that there was an additional request for alumni support at those games. :( But that also means no coverage at the women's hockey for the second consecutive weekend. :( :(

Happy Thanksgiving to all of the Gopher faithful!:)

Happy Thanksgiving to the Gopher fans. Hopefully this will be an exciting weekend of women's hockey. Clarkson fans are quite excited about the season so far... for a program that's only 10 years old, even to think we have a chance against the Gophers is impressive.

After Robert Morris dropped us to kick off their 4th year and Syracuse took us down to the wire starting their 2nd, we know that you have more than just a chance. Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.

Good win tonight. :) Sorry I missed it. :( Hopefully we can keep it up tomorrow. ;)

Post-game notes on GopherSports.com

I thought the keys to yesterday's game were the Gophers' speed advantage and their ability to control the puck for extending periods in Clarkson's zone. They were able to generate some excellent looks at the net and hard shots which yielded many good rebound opportunities. The one negative was they noticeably let up during the last 5 minutes of the game which could give Clarkson hope for today. Gotta give Clarkson credit for refusing to quit even when the game was out of reach.

The Gophers need to come out flying again and grab an early lead. You could tell that Clarkson is a very dangerous team that was probably a little off their game yesterday.

For those who don't get the PPC newsletter, the club intro to half of the freshmen is now up on the website. Thanks to Kris Seeler for the abundant supply of game pictures; more will be added as time permits.

This appears to be a constant over the years. Whenever the Gophers start to skate their 4th line in a game where that line did not play early, there is a drop in intensity throughout the rotation. This is not a reflection on how strong that line is in any given season, but more seems to be a subliminal reaction of the team in general -- "the coaches must think we have this game in hand." The one exception was last season when the 4th line played almost as much as the other units, so it was no big deal whenever they would skate.

All in all, it was a very good effort by the home team, and I'd be happy to see that in any given game.

Also, it was a pleasure to finally meet D2D.:)
