Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

With the Sat. / Sun. series I doubt I'll be making the trip to Grand Forks. Luckily the games are available via the UND site or Gophersports. Kinda rough weekends for both the Sioux and Gophers last weekend. Both will be looking to bounce back...Gophers will obviously be looking to find the back of the net significantly more frequently than their last outing.

Could be a tough series...made tougher if Minnesota spends too much time in PK mode.

Anyone headed to The Ralph?

From "The Daily" article:
Despite the offensive struggles last weekend, Frost doesn’t plan on making any adjustments.
I hope that's the right move, but I'd have pulled the trigger on a couple. It would be one thing if the dip in production was just last week, but this has been a trend. The team scored 37 goals in the first 8 games, and then 22 in the next 8 -- before being shut out on the trip east. In any case, these are huge points to close out the first half, because the 2nd half promises a lot of challenges.

I recall all the pre-season talk about emphasizing defense, implying that it would be crucial for this team because goals for would be harder to come by this year. We heard that most would come as the result of hard work, not necessarily pretty, etc.

I think most everyone was pleasantly surprised with the offensive production once the actual season got underway, and so for the past 10 games you might look at it as merely meeting the relatively low expectations that were set originally? The problem now, though, is that the team was able to raise expectations and we all want them to continue to exceed them because we know they are capable...

But I agree that with just one goal scored in two games last weekend, the timing may have been right for shaking things up, if even just a little. No matter what the expectations are at this point, it would be hard to not improve on last weekend's goals for average of 0.5!

Partly, that was because we were coming off last year when we were in the 4.5 - 5.0 GPG range.

We heard that most would come as the result of hard work, not necessarily pretty, etc.
That seemed to be part of the problem last weekend -- no traffic going to the net. Although credit to Harvard, it is hard to get bodies in front of the other team's goalie when they have you pinned in your own zone for much of the time.

The last ten games, they are averaging 2.2 goals scored per game. That isn't where any of us expected them to be, and it isn't enough for them to win on a consistent basis.

I wish they had scored a goal last weekend.:(

My bad (memory lapse)! :o

I've attended a LOT of college hockey games over more years than I care to admit, but offhand I don't remember a single time seeing a team get shut out two games in a row. Then again, I didn't even remember the result from this past weekend, so this may not mean much.

In any case, let's hope the Gophers can rebound and generate some offense this weekend. So often you see where people tend to first point fingers at the defense/goaltending when their team loses. But in this case the forwards definitely need to step it up a couple of notches and go into their break feeling good about what they've accomplished this year.

We did shut out Clarkson in 2 games the series before, and we shut out SCSU in the home-and-home earlier. A couple of years ago, we shut out BSU and MSU on back-to-back weekends. So it happens, but it isn't fun when it happens to us.:(

Miss Brausen continued to impress in last nights Pony / Raider battle...as she has throughout her career at Roseville. A clear 2010 Ms. Hockey candidate. It'll be nice to have her in Maroon & Gold.
Yes, she had a nice game. I thought she did a good job of balancing trying to be an impact player on the ice while still involving and trusting her teammates.

Previously this week, we were talking about an area where the Gophs' numbers have slumped from earlier in the year. Here's a case where they've picked it up from a shaky start per Gophersports:
Dating back to the Minnesota State game (11/13), the Mavericks scored their lone goal of the game during the power play. Since then, the Gophers have held their opponents scoreless in their last 44 power-play attempts.

Also, for any of you general (non-sport-specific) Gopher fans, here's the link to the Gopher volleyball team's post-match notes as they upset Florida State 3 sets to 1 in the NCAA Regional Final to advance to next weekend's Final Four in Tampa. :D
Outstanding! Congrats to the Gopher v'ball team. Good luck in Tampa!

I watched the match on ESPN-U. Guess who I spotted in the crowd shots standing next to the band.

Guilty as charged. :p But I did pay the admission; no sneaking in.

A couple of times during the match, the FSU fight song was played on the PA system (due to NCAA regs and evenness of representation). So the band started singing the Rouser over it. The crowd caught on the second time it happened (during the fourth, and deciding, set) and did the spellout at the end of the timeout.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Hopefully a better game this evening. Yesterday showed the lacking soft hands from forwards. Gophers has too many end to end type forwards. Good and powerful skaters and hard workers. But you need soft hands in order to create scoring opportunities. Otherwise you find yourself battling along the boards, corners and behind the net. This is typical for Gophers.

But we enjoy the game itself. And starting time favourable 10pm. Great show time!

Good first half for this team all things considered in the morph from 2008-2009 to the present. I think goaltending has been as instrumental as predicted in the 2009-2010 WCHA, and certainly for the Gophers. The Gophers have done well in other aspects obviously...gathering 24 pts. the 1st time around the conference. The 2nd time around the WCHA will be very / increasingly challenging of course. The team will have some additional adversity through player absences. Pretty key how those absences are handled, with big opportunities for others to step in. Wouldn't mind seeing a little drop in penalty minutes, which would be a considerable plus going thru the conference again. While the PK has been good...they deserve a little break in 2010. :) Frosh class have stepped into roles smoothly and helped the team.

Good luck and good health to the Gophers in 2010!

I started to write this earlier but needed to leave for an outside appointment. Just before posting I saw where you beat me to the punch, but I'll add anyway:

So what's the consensus for the first half of the season? You would think that the team has to be feeling pretty good about what they've accomplished so far: leading the league with just two losses, and being ranked at No. 2 in the nation as they head into their break.

I have to admit that the team's play has easily exceeded my own expectations, the Wisconsin and Harvard series notwithstanding. As highly touted as Noora Raty was coming in, who would have known she would figure in so prominantly on the team's success? A .965 save percentage and a GAA of .89? Certainly the team in front of her gets credit here as well, especially in the past 10 games when they've given up just 7 goals (0.7 average). This is an improvement over the first 10 games where they surrendered 20 goals (2.0 average) which is still good.

Of concern perhaps is the offense where their average has gone from 4.1 goals in the first 10 to just 2.6 in the second 10, brought down mainly because of the Harvard series. Removing those two goose-egg games from the mix the average improves to 3.25 but still not where they want it, I'm sure. During the second half I'm sure the coaches will be looking for ways to generate more offense without giving more scoring changes to their opponents. Quite often you might look to your defense to get more involved offensively, but the stats show that of the team's five leading point getters, already two are defensemen. So they'll be looking for some of the other forwards who haven't scored much to pick up the pace a little.

But the key to the second half will be to make sure they continue to do all the little things that have made them successful so far, and most of these have to do with playing good team defense and then take advantage of what the opponents give you. I believe that was the coach's gameplan going in, and at this point it seems to be mainly a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it - but there are always ways to make it run a little better".
