Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Quite often you might look to your defense to get more involved offensively, but the stats show that of the team's five leading point getters, already two are defensemen. So they'll be looking for some of the other forwards who haven't scored much to pick up the pace a little.
Those 5 are the current first power play. Of late, that unit has been scoring well, while nothing else really has clicked. The 3rd line has supplied punch at times, but you really don't expect your 3rd to give you offense every time out. The second showed glimmers yesterday, which is good, because at some point, they'll need a little pop from some other source.

A good test coming up right out of the break. If they can limit shots like they did on Saturday, something they didn't do against OSU in Columbus, that'll help.

Megan Bozek: WCHA Rookie of the Week
Megan Bozek, Fr., D, Minnesota

Megan Bozek, a freshman defenseman from Buffalo Grove, Ill., scored two goals and assisted on another two to amass four points in the University of Minnesota's two-game WCHA series sweep over North Dakota last weekend. Bozek also won the weekly rookie award on Nov. 25.

Bozek scored two power-play goals in the Golden Gophers' 3-1 win over the host Fighting Sioux last Saturday (Dec. 12) in Grand Forks, N.D. One of her two tallies was the eventual game-winner, coming at 1:53 of the third period. After UND scored a 5-on-3 goal to close the gap to 2-1, Bozek responded with her second power-play goal of the game at 17:23 in the third.

Then last Sunday (Dec. 13), Bozek assisted on two other power-play goals to give her a series total of four points. She assisted on the game-winner and held the first assist on one of Brittany Francis' goals en route to a 5-0 win.

As a part of the Gopher defense, Bozek and the rest of the blueliners held North Dakota to just six shots on goal on Saturday and allowed just one goal in two games.

On the season, Bozek is tied for fourth in scoring among her UM teammates with15 points (3g, 12a) in 20 games.

I believe Natalie Darwitz is supposed to be on Rosen's Sports Sunday tonight. If anyone is interested in taking a break from the Vikings game it's on WCCO (CBS) locally in the Twin Cities. Not sure if she'll have someone with her or not.

Given the way the Vikings game is going, I stopped watching it 45 minutes ago.

Glad I saw this... Thanks gopher991! :)

Natalie was great on Rosen's show tonight. Couldn't ask for a better ambassador for the womens game. She mentioned the December 30th game vs. Canada several times - hope there is a decent crowd for this event.

Happy Birthday CrazyDave! Just remember you're never too old to harass the officials.

Or sing the Rouser! ;)
I'll definitely agree with that second one (or Minnesota March or Minnesota Fight or Our Minnesota or Go Gopher Victory -- my momma taught me all of them ;) ).

As for the officials, I'm itching for the second half of the season to begin this weekend. And assuming that I make it up to Bemidji, I should be at all 22 remaining Gopher games (hoping that there are that many  ).

(Just to confirm my math -- 14 regular season games + 1 exhibition + 2 WCHA quarterfinal games + 2 WCHA Final Faceoff + 3 NCAA Tourney = 22.)

I guess I missed this b'day also. Happy belated birthday, Dave.

There could possibly be 23, with the scenario above except for a 3-game WCHA quarter. The site of all but the WCHA and NCAA quarters are set, and all of those games will be played in the state of Minnesota, and all but 5 (2xBemidji, 2xDuluth, St.Cloud) of those at Ridder. So if the Gophers can continue to take care of their own ice, the schedule sets up very well for them. Mathematically, it is possible that they'd play 18 of 23 additional games at home.

Wow, those videos from the 3 GWH championships are really great to watch. Mucho thanks to the Sports Info Director for putting them together and making it available to everyone.

New decade, time to build on to the history!
