Geneseo Ice Knights 13-14 Season: Where memories linger and our thoughts remain

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights 13-14 Season: Where memories linger and our thoughts remain

Another cool article about Geneseo hockey, this one about Maine-native Connor Anthoine:
http://www.sunjournal.com/news/local-sports/2014/03/19/college-hockey-right-choice-anthoine/1506971

I liked this part:

He learned about Geneseo through a teammate with the Eastern Mountain Glades, his junior team. He looked into the hockey program and was intrigued.

"I shot them an email to see what they were all about," Connor said. "I got a call. I went on a visit. I fell in love with the place. It's a great school. It's an unbelievable atmosphere. Everyone supports the hockey team. I couldn't have asked for a better place to end up."

Giving up on the dream of playing Division I hockey wasn't so easy. It had been his goal for years.

"It definitely was a tough decision for me to make," he said. "It was one thing I had been planning on my entire life, and all of a sudden, it started changing. Then other opportunities arrived. It really came down to, do I want to go somewhere where I'm not going to play as much and be part of a Division I team, or do I want to play Division III and have a better opportunity to play every game and be able to help the team make it to something like the Frozen Four?"

SNC has had players transfer in from D1 schools, at some point they decide if they want to play vs warming the bench...............sounds like your player Connor happy with his choice!

sometimes they warm the bench in D3 as well:eek:

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights 13-14 Season: Where memories linger and our thoughts remain

The D1 castoffs are a good way to go, but I don't understand why few teams/coaches recruit the fertile Quebec Junior Leagues and/or Midget AAA. The key is to find a kid who's parents understand the value of a U.S. education and have the $$ to pay full tuition. I do believe there is an extremely large pool of talent that barely gets scratched by the D3 programs.

I know Plattsburgh, Norwich, Oswego, Middlebury and Elmira have had these players in the past and most all of them were high impact players. Some of Plattsburgh's greatest players were French-speaking Quebecers and in recent years Oswego has had players like Jean-Simon Richard and Francois Gagnon. Middlebury's dynasty of the mid 90's had several as well.

Oswego also had Jocelyn Dubord.

Norwich has had plenty including Pier-Olivier Cotnoir and Shawn Baker.

Great season Ice Knights! Many amazing accomplishments by this team. First SUNYAC RS title in 24 years, first 2 NCAA tourney wins, first frozen four, 5 all SUNYAC players, Conference POY, 1st team AA, and SUNYAC and National COY.

We played SNC tough too. They certainly didn't blow us off the ice, just capitalized on 2 chances at end of second and then packed it in during third. Great hockey program! Hopefully we'll be there someday.

SNb to much for Genny, and they have been to much for everyone most of the yr,genny gained some nice experience, and will be a force next yr i am sure

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights 13-14 Season: Where memories linger and our thoughts remain

I thought Genny made a good account of themselves. SNC just too good for them or anybody else it seems. If the Financial Aid continues there at SNC, they might win these tournaments every year. I'd like to slap them in DI right now and take my chances. They would win more than half, depending on the schedule of course.

Best year ever for Genny hockey. This team replaces the Paul Duffy teams in '89-91 with Chris Smith, Terry O'Reilly and those guys. Now, that's about all the back-patting this old Cardinal is going to do. Just wanted to congratulate the Knights on a great year!

What does that mean? SNC is the only college providing financial aid?

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights 13-14 Season: Where memories linger and our thoughts remain

No, they're not. But their package is tough to beat.

It can be **** good. I got quite a bit 25 years ago. My lousy skating probably doesn't help your point though.

On to Geneseo. I was pretty impressed with them. I noticed something I see often against SNC in them playing their top guys a bunch early when SNC was largely rolling 4 lines and 3 D pairs. Depth would be a big thing to work on because there are some parts there.

I suppose that's why when the NCAA conducts its financial aid audits for athletes against the general student body St. Norbert has never been rung up on anything, unlike some schools, including in the SUNYAC. Must be pretty bitter to not even get into the NCAA Tournament in a down year for the east. Perhaps the top non-D1 players find their way to SNC because they know they will get coached up and have a legit shot to win national title every year. What better inducement could a program offer than that?

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights 13-14 Season: Where memories linger and our thoughts remain

Sure, you're right, it MUST be the coaching. It certainly wouldn't have anything to do with tuition. Funny thing is, I didn't mean anything negative by my comment, good for them if they can glide through the audits. No need to get nasty Nubby.

What's with the "SNb"? Can't just do SNC like the rest of us???

You're the one throwing unfounded accusations around. By the way, how many public schools made it to Lewiston, where the tuition is ostensibly cheaper, anyway?

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights 13-14 Season: Where memories linger and our thoughts remain

The recent posts here miss the actual point entirely... Academics aren't the issue at all.

Not that it matters much, but I'd be interested to see the birth-dates of the SNC players, just to see how they stack up against the normal 18-22 college-age demographic.

(USCHO goes out of its way to deny access to that information; that seems to me that it's part of a general conspiracy to make D-3 appear to provide a level playing field, when of course that clearly isn't the case.)

If SNC is even close to as "mature" as was UWEC was last year -as in: dressing grown-men to compete against teenagers here and there- its not so very amazing that they're going to run roughshod over the whole field yet again, is it?

Well within the rules. If you have a problem with 21 year old freshman, then petition the NCAA to change the rules.

And ironies of ironies it was the late Shawn Walsh who made it a practice of recruiting 20 year olds.
