Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

I'm in a production support role now, and some of us on the team (especially me and one other guy) aren't seated near the rest of the group. While the bulk of the team is on th 5th floor, I'm on the 4th and another guy is on the 8th. It all came about as a tech reorg, and since we're moving buildings about twelve months from now they don't want to spend the cash on moving people around this building unless they absolutely need to do so.

I have yet to see any logical reason why you need to have an open chat window with your entire team, all day.

We have IM too. It's very helpful as a lot of our team is remote as well, not to mention the rest of the company being all over the planet. If I need to talk to them - I send them an IM. It's not difficult. I certainly do not need to talk to them ALL, ALL the time.

I often wonder how you survived your time at Tech... :D

There was a distinct non-nerd community at Tech. It was a snowmobiling, hunting, Jeep, beer drinking, redneck kind of crowd. Drawn to Tech for its proximity to the outdoors and motorsports types of engineering (think SAE vehicle teams: Baja, Formula, Clean Snow, Super Mileage, etc). That was the group that I mostly ran with while in school.

Knowing quite a few Tech grads, I can attest to this. There's the "Big Bang Theory" crowd (seriously, that show is absolute truth in the Tech nerd personality), and then there are people like bbdl.

Causes Of The Day. Apparently today is the BellTalk. What happened to Black Lives Matter, or Boko Haram, or Ice Bucket Challenge?

Of the 4 things you mentioned, only 2 are causes. The other 2 are either terror organizations or criminal gangs.

With Boko, I was referring to the cause of releasing the kidnapped girls. I just hate "hashtag activism."

Bell donated $0.05 for every tweet that had #BellLetsTalk. I think there were over 20 million tweets and over $6 million (CDN). It promoted mental health. Pretty good fundraising.

And it didn't involve a stupid gimmick like the ALS.

Second or third year I've seen the Bell Lets Talk cause and I fully support their efforts. Would be nice to see a US company do the same for US mental health (but I fear further discussion of that would move talk to a political thread).
