Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Yeah, raising awareness for serious medical conditions is such a horrible thing...

My point is all the hashtag/social media activism. In a month or so, no one is going to remember BellTalk. In a couple years, if you do the Ice Bucket Challenge, people will wonder WTeFF? It's just like all the pink ribbons we all complain about every year, on a smaller scale.

My complaint with the pink ribbons has to do with most of those pink ribbons are tied to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which is to support the AWARENESS of breast cancer. We're all pretty dammed aware of it by now. Meanwhile research and treatment are often struggling to raise the money they need to further better treatment methods and survival rates (which has come a long ways, admittedly). At this point it's a misallocation of funds.

As to the Ice Bucket Challenge, I get a kick out of people annoyed by that. It raised money for a worthy cause and people had some fun along the way.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Yeah...ALS got tons of money they dont ever get and people had fun doing it. But it filled up people's Facebook feeds so THE HORROR!!!!!!!1!1!!

There is never anything wrong with raising money for a charity...

My problem is the ribbon.

Which is tied back to the stupid song "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree"- about a prisoner who got out, and is going back home.

Which was later used in 1980 when the Iran Hostages came home.

And then for everything else as a symbol.

Granted, the Yellow Ribbon was used to signify a loved on in the US calvary in the 19th Century.

But now we have ribbon stuff for freaking eveything. Just like the hoards of wrist bands.

At least the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was original- WAY better than another ribbon or wrist band.

Lets be original, people.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

I think the next "ice bucket challenge" type of cause should be The Cleveland Steamer Challenge for Colon Cancer Research.

WHO!? Who doesn't want to wear the ribbon!?!?!?

October is unbearable in the NFL because it's all pink all the time and the ultimate form of pinkwashing for profit. I think the stat that came out a few years ago was something like only 8% of all revenue from NFL Pink sales went to cancer research/awareness.

BellLetsTalk is an annual thing that started that after Boogaard, Rypien, and Belak died.

You're like Worthless with his Surly hate. :p

But if the NFL put an end to the pink citing the 8%, they'd be labeled as anti women.

Here is some advice Brent. When you find yourself in a hole - quit digging! :p

so the latest thing around here is to jump into a snow drift in your skimpy bathing suit as a follow up to the ice bucket challenge. Seems to be only the young whippersnappers.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

I'd give five bucks to breast cancer research for every chick that flashes her tips at me. :D

I think I'm onto something here.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

if you want to donate to a worthy cause you should totally look into the potawatomi zoo aazk chapter. just email potawatomiaazk@gmail.com for information how and about our current fundraisers (mostly zoo animal painted gift cards (blank or with a personalized message, restaurant partnerships [if you happen to be in the south bend area], and fun activities for the kiddos [again sb area]). support animal conservation! people suck, anyway

/shameless self-promotion

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Maybe it's my inner-Yooper, but it really bugs me when people half-arse snow removal... Whenever my roommate does it, there are "sluff" lines (overflow snow that falls off to the side of the shovel/snowblower) all over the driveway... He also doesn't pay attention to where he's throwing the snow with the snowblower... He'll coat areas he already cleared with 1/2-1 inch of snow... The driveway only looks half done when he finishes

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Yesterday was one of those "Peter Finch from Network" days. Spread salt on the driveway, bought new wiper blades for all the cars, topped off the washer fluid levels, went grocery shopping despite having to schlep everything up the driveway by hand.

http://gawker.com/mcdonalds-is-americas-most-cynical-corporation-1683229882/+marchman

Gawker is just becoming a place for a bunch of idiots screaming at the world for some perceived injustice. Jeebus, stop cutting yourself and smile once in a while.

I understand Gawker and its sister sites are supposed to be more blogs than news reports, but I really wish they would do more news and less editorials. Heck, the only reason I even started reading Deadspin was because they did real news about Manti Teo. They still put some humorous stuff out there and it's a good aggregator for funny sports news, but the continual platform pushing gets old. Any story involving the NCAA involves the lingo "most useless organization." Anything involving PSU and NCAA involved "showing once again the NCAA had no rhyme or reason to get involved" yadda yadda yadda.

After awhile it stops being snarky fun and just starts being whiny and annoying.

Some stuff like i09 is cool because it's primarily all news, and I like Kotaku the few times I know what they're talking about, but most of Gawker just seems to be a bunch of writers who will fine the most trivial thing to complain about.

And then, there's the worst site of them all. Jezebel. That's the site that let's you know stereotypes are based on truth. All the worst parts of feminism write and comment on there. I'm pretty sure 85% of the people on Jezebel would be happy living in a world with absolutely no men.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Yeah Gawker and the others have mostly unreadable dreck.

Gawker: The stuff they've put together on police violence was good but there's a lot of gossip junk there.

Deadspin: Occasionally puts out some good work. It's really for Screengrabber and the comments. Screamer, their soccer blog, is unreadable because it's main writer is a blatant Eurosnob who hates MLS (anything MLS related is filed under "MLS Sucks", they even wrote an article on why you should ignore the league).

Jalopnik, the auto one, is cool. io9 is fun to read. Kotaku is great if you're super nerdy like myself or Twitch, otherwise it's probably hard to understand.

Jezebel is, well, Jezebel. Everything is "Rape Culture!" It's the website form of the Womnysts from PCU.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Work. Last week Wednesday, I was only scheduled for five hours (12:30-5:30 PM), which means I only got a 15 minute break. Instead, when I walked into work today, I was told I worked from 2-9ish that day, and that I forgot to take a lunch. And I had to sign a paper formally accusing me of a meal violation.

This could have been avoided had the personnel director done some actual investigative work instead of misreading his computer. Instead, now I'm a liar and apparently I don't know where I am any more...

Why would you ever sign a paper that is falsified and accusative towards you?
