But there is a shortage of bleach and I am a patriot. I don't want to take someone else's dose

Dayummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, woman! *golfclap* That is a line I would have come up with. Well done!

Re: Gear Grinding 9: I Need a Wine!

The phrasing is wrong. Very wrong. That commentary is pointing out the hypocrisy of said politician. I, for one, do not like hypocrisy. I despise it. But choose your words very carefully in criticism.

Guh. Ebenezer Scrooge! You will be visited by the Spirit of Casual Homophobia Past.

Sit down, man. You don't get it; trust us. Trust us. Sit down. Fermez la bouche. I could explain this to you in 100 words or 10,000, you would not get it. It's a blind spot. Just... trust us.

Re: Gear Grinding 9: I Need a Wine!

So instead of dismissing, explain your criticisms of my posts.

OK. Pull up a chair.

The problem is the "hypocrisy" only bites if you unconsciously accept the premise that gay = bad. I'll give you an analogy. Jack Benny made part of his career out of a running gag that he was a miser. A subgag was he was always accusing Phil Harris of being cheap. The subgag went along the lines of, "Golly, Phil, how can you deny your wife a nice birthday present. Why, I got my wife a new mop!" Phil: "The cleaning lady must have been offering layaway."

The joke isn't that Jack is a hypocrite. It's that he's a hypocrite and the thing he's accusing Phil of is a bad characteristic. Try making a similar joke about a good characteristic. Say a beautiful woman goes on and on about how beautiful another woman is. That's not a joke -- it isn't even ironic.

Just stay away from trying to be humorous about TEH GAYZ I've heard maybe 15 gay jokes that worked in the last 20 years and two thirds of them were by Dan Savage who is a comic genius. You and I are not comic geniuses.

Re: Gear Grinding 9: I Need a Wine!

So is it homophobic to joke about Karen Pence being a beard for Mike?

I'd say no, or at least not as much because, arguably, having a beard and not coming forward being gay is, at this point, kinda sketchy. In the context of being a fulminating public gay-hater then it's very sketchy. The reductio ad absurdum there is Dave Chapelle's black white supremacist. What is being made fun of is not that the guy is black but that he's a f-cking Klansman.

The distinction is there's nothing at all wrong with being gay. There can certainly be something wrong with certain behaviors which a gay person might also display, but those behaviors aren't gay behaviors they are Being A D-ck. The "ew you're gay AND a hypocrite" treatment would be equivalent to making a joke that Chapelle is a Klansman and also likes watermelon.

Gay isn't bad.

However, thinking that gay = bad while being gay yourself, and others pointing out that hypocrisy, is where I'm coming from. The commenters could have been wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more different about this, but...internet. Sigh.

Re: Gear Grinding 9: I Need a Wine!

"You realize you are performing actions that go against the very thing you are condemning."

vs.

"YOU LIKE THE BUTTHOLE! LULZ!"

That sort of thing.

Re: Gear Grinding 9: I Need a Wine!

Hey, gay jokes aren’t funny, come on guys...

(Sorry, couldn’t resist)

First quarter of grad school: I'm going to be okay. I am writing well and using proper APA formatting. I'm a rock star goddess.

Second quarter of grad school: I am submitting assignments as prayers to whatever you believe in. I am not confident in much of anything right now. The only thing I am sure of is my cat is an adorable a-hole.

Re: Gear Grinding 9: I Need a Wine!

The staff at Panera Bread keep calling me sir and do not respond to correction at all. I'm out.

Mine finds a way to screw up my order. Every. Single. Visit. Like, they've started to find creative ways to disappoint me.

So I think its just corporate culture to not give a sh**. ;)

In seriousness though, that's terrible and not a location you need to keep patronizing.

But they deserve $15/hr. Or something.

Re: Gear Grinding 9: I Need a Wine!

Now's not the time, Rube. I'm till upset that the staff at Panera refuse to say "ma'am," and you want to turn this into a minimum wage argument.

But hey, you want to poke the bear? Let's go.

Re: Gear Grinding 9: I Need a Wine!

How is $15/hour relevant to what I originally said?

I'm upset over an amazing lack of respect from the staff at Panera Bread, and he's turning this into a minimum wage argument.

Re: Gear Grinding 9: I Need a Wine!

Refreshing ? to see something other than the 2 most popular grinders.

Re: Gear Grinding 9: I Need a Wine!

That's what you mean, you don't want people to live unless they make you happy.

Wrong. Way to twist my words. If one cannot do the job as required, one does not deserve the wages desired. It's not that difficult to understand. If I am incompetent at my job, I don't have a job anymore. It doesn't matter the payscale (pssst, ok, can we leave politicians out of this, btw? ;) ). Can't do the job at $8/hr, $10/hr, whatever? Why the hell would you deserve $15/hour?
