Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

We're going extra innings. Question for us Sox fans -- do you pinch hit for Papi if he comes up again tonite?

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

I take full responsibility for the loss last night. I have still never been to a Red Sox win against the spanks. In Boston or NY.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

The Sox are 2-1 when I'm in attendance against the Be-Pinstriped Ones.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

No surprises tonight...lineup and bullpen fail.

But hey, we have great starting pitching and defense!

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

This umpire has a strike zone the size of a thimble. He's squeezed both pitchers.

That whole ump thing cracked me up. I know Curt blogged about it - he must have taken it down, 'cause I can't find it now.

Basics (in case you live under a rock): West: "These games take too stinkin' long!" while squeezing the strike zone, thus forcing more balls, thus lengthening the game. Schilling: "The guys are taking their pitches, it's their job, you don't like it, quit."

Okay, I'm putting words in mouths here, but that was the gist as I understood it. West is a giant tool.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

JD Drew is missing todays game with a stiff neck.. lol... Is there a bigger ***** in all of sports???

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

West is a giant tool.

So is Schilling. For a variety of reasons. He was great in the playoffs and it's tough to disparage his dedication to eliminating ALS, but he generated slightly less drama than Manny. And not through lack of effort.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

4 more strikeouts on the day for little papi.

Can we just put him on the shelf until August and go straight to the decent 2nd half?

In the meantime, we have a bunch of more attractive options at DH. Including Josh Beckett, when he starts.

I've always been of the opinion that people don't like Schilling because he speaks out of turn and goes against the grain. That does things to people in a cultural way more than an individual right/wrong/full of **** way. Schilling is also trying to play both sides in that he wants to be involved in sports media and he certainly likes the attention... but again, culturally there are certain things you can't do and still expect to have a mouthpiece. When stuff like this happens he realizes that people will put consequences upon him for it after the fact.

I see some of myself in Schill... for right, for wrong, for whatever. He says what he thinks is correct and doesn't (at first blush) why it would be wrong to say things... he says them anyways. After all, if you believe they are correct then why avoid saying it? If its true (in my mind and I think his) and everybody else knows it or it seems to be a logical consequence thereof then what's the big deal? The big deal is that having these things be spoken forces people to acknowledge them (when they otherwise wouldn't care) and possibly act... and that will ruffle feathers.

I don't know... that's my take. Maybe Schill will come in here and brain me on this and so i've shot my mouth off :) I see a lot of myself in the way he acts so that's my thoughts.

In 2006, Francona waited until game 3 to replace Foulke with Papelbon.

Soon, folks, soon. Do you trade Bowden and a mid level prospect for a catcher and move Martinez to the DH slot? Then you have 'tek and the noob catch 70 games each with VM in reserve catching around 20.

How about Clay... Does anybody think he's ever going to be great? Seems like a head case to me.

I think he has a tremendous upside, but what do you do when DiceK comes off the DL???

Plus he's cheap $$$.

What about Manny D?

I'm not saying I'm right.. Just asking an honest question. I keep hearing about his upside, but I don't see it.

Ellsbury out of the lineup again today. Guess that collision with Beltre was worse than he let on -- back when he said he might be available to come back the very next day...

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

boston may not have the greatest A team this year, but one positive from their offseason pickups is that their B team isnt much worse. having a glut of outfield, corner infield, and starting pitching will help them get through minor injuries like ellsbury.

i have to think the sox intend to leverage this depth to upgrade the offense. i would imagine that ellsbury and bucholz will get sent, or atleast offered, to SD multiple times over the course of the season for adrian gonzalez. but with a top prospect like westmoreland out of the picture, i surmise the padres will turn to the sox untouchables like casey kelley or bard in their asking price to complete the deal. i wonder who it will be and will theo cave?

sox fans cant like having to go against one of their own in hoyer who has a pretty good feel for sox prospects - and wont just buy off on some hack like lars anderson whose ship seems to have sailed.

He's on my fantasy team, so his considerate nature is not appreciated!

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Welcome Gunner Robert Papelbon. 8lb 8oz 21"

Wonder if Dad is a Warren Zevon fan?

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Bottom of the 11th. Bases loaded, nobody out. How will the Red Sox fail to win this, right now?
Well . . . Papi's up :D

eta

Weak ground ball, force out at home. Now a DP kills the inning. And Beltre serves one up. Un Real.

Rays' washed-up has-been > Boston's washed-up has-been.

Burrell with the game-winning(?) 2-run HR.
