Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

It's early, but Ortiz looks like more of a problem than Beltre or Cameron.

How long to stay with him? It's too early for a mid-season move, and probably too early to give up on Papi, but Hermida is a competent bat on the bench...

Big Papi is not happy.

I will always love David Ortiz. I am still watching his performances carefully, searching for any hint that he'll find his groove like he did last year - only, hopefully earlier on in this season. I hope he doesn't get in his own way, being so frustrated.

I will also say, I was sad to hear about Varitek being benched, but after the performances we've seen from Martinez, I'm good. At least we still have Tek's eyes on all the pitchers!

Interesting that Manchester local news didn't mention anything about Scutero's error in the game overview. I'm actually kinda glad about that: one error cannot be held responsible for a whole game: what about the other runs the Yankees scored, or all the men we left on base? Just saying.

Probably was a day when a question like that after 2 games would A) never be asked B) get the asker the silent treatment for a while. What a stupid question to ask after 2 games.

I wish Francona had just smirked and refused to answer.

If Papi was 5-7 would they ask if they thought he was going to set the records for highest batting average in history and have over 400 hits?

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Papi's miffed? Too bad.

Francona's point about players going 0-4 one day and 3-4 the next is well-taken. Though in this case, he went o-fer again the next day, and continued to strand baserunners like he had an incentive clause for it.

It's true that players have bad days and good days. It's also true that players have roid-fueled success and then crash afterwards. It's also true that Papi was the most useless cleanup hitter in recent memory for much of last season.

If he shows the same warning signs this season that he did last season, it would be stupid to wait until July to address the problem.

Is it too early to write him off for 2010? Of course. Do folks need to apologize for sitting up and taking notice at his struggles at the plate? Nope.

A little bit of everything led to that loss. I think Lackey will pitch better than Beckett and Lester tonight...Sox win the series.

I forgot how much I missed Sloba's yelling on the mound...

Agreed. I love Papi from 2003 to 2008. But the past two seasons? Ugh...

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

From June 6 through the end of last season, Ortiz hit 27 homers to lead the American League over that time period.

I'm not excusing his start last year, I too question the 'chemistry' behind it and I do look for a well rounded hitter vs just 27 HR's in a few months... so, not trying to argue with anybody...but it might be too early to start shoveling the dirt...if anything, making that an issue after 2 games isn't going to help matters. Good fodder for discussion boards, not a good question to the player in my view. (unless it was a Daily News reporter);)

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Not shoveling the dirt, but if you're trying to trade Lowell, it would help if you get him on the field. Pinch hitting for Ortiz against lefties late in the game would seem like a logical situation. Unfortunately, no manager is gonna do that the 2nd game of the year.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

I didn't understand Francona's comments on Lowell...what was he saying?

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

2 more stranded after 1 AB. Papi's up up to 7 for 8 on the season. He may be batting .000, but not just anyone can strand .875.

Tito could at least bat the stiff 8th. :p

This umpire has a strike zone the size of a thimble. He's squeezed both pitchers.

The Peter Wolf / Steven Tyler interview seemed to be uncomfortable for everyone.

And somehow, I'm not clamoring to the box office for tickets to an Aerosmith / J. Geils Band concert.

Entrants to the Bring out Your Dead thread...

How much over 4 hours does THIS game go? I propose a special MLB rule that in Red Sox - Yankee games, the count starts @ 1-1 and you only get 2 foul balls before being called out.

Nice swing David - dead in the clutch....

Overreaction by the umpire. If Lackey wanted to hit Jeter, he'd hit him with an 85 mph fastball in the fanny.
