Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

First of all, lots of good AD talk but I'm not going to get involved in the chatter. All I'm going to say on that is I'm excited to see what happens and hopefully make the right choice!

2nd, the schedule: Wow, pretty hard if you ask me. It should be fun, but the clusters could kill us. Michigan is going to be loaded next season, doesn't seem like we have much luck against Alaska, and MSU/OSU will be difficult as well. On top of that add Minnesota, BSU, and UAH...yikes! One game at a time I guess... BTW why isn't WMU in our cluster? I thought rivals always kept their clusters together.

3rd, I assume Redmond is returning for sure? I really like what we will have for defensmen/goaltending this upcoming season, but I feel like were going to have to do the wait and see approach for where the scoring is going to come from.

Very tough schedule with some question marks coming back for this team. I think Redmond will be back, but I guess you never really know. I get the impression he likes college life and likes Ferris. Who knows though?

You are right about the AD chatter and I wish I had stayed out of it. My only point was that we need solutions right now instead of gripes. i think that message got lost but that was the message.

I don't think you've said anything out of line at all. I do think your posts seem to underestimate the financial aspect of the way things are in the league, however.

What is going on now is a recent development. The big boys of the league are paying attention to hockey, and using their checkbooks to do so. Ten years ago, you could not say that. Notre Dame was not very good. Ohio State was scattershot. They had a two year run with Jeff Maund and Hugo Boisvert, and then they slipped back. Miami still played in Goggin and was up and down. BG, Ferris and LSSU were still, well, mediocre to bad, and WMU would hit or miss from time to time. UAF (at the time) was a non-factor, and except for a 2-3 year run, so was UNO. But for the most part, the league was Michigan, Michigan State, and the ten little indians. It's certainly changed now, largely due to the fact that hockey has gotten the attention of the bigger schools.

IF (and that is a big "IF" on purpose) Ohio State gets their act in order, the smaller schools could be fighting for the table scraps, and fifth place from time to time. Expectations may need to be lowered.

That part I put in the bold is a fair enough statement. It is certainly a fairly significant factor among other factors that also are very important.

Notre Dame is a good example of a program that has risen up in recent years and the same with Miami. I tend to think Western could step it up next. WMU has some of the pieces in place and a good student section.

You make some good points.

Hey All!

Just checked in for the first time since before the CCHA Tournament. Glad to see your thoughts and comments on Tom leaving. What about some other summer things to keep us busy.

Like previously mentioned, our schedule is out: http://twitter.com/FerrisHockey

How about Ferris State Hockey helping Fox Sports Detroit earn an EMMY Award for CCHA All-Access Show episode: http://tw0.us/FtM

Local boy, Dominic Panetta committed to FSU for 2011-2012 season: http://twitter.com/ferrishockey. Coach Daniels has known him since three years old and he has worked the FSU Hockey Summer Camps.

I know there is a thread on this already, but more focused towards FSU. Thoughts on NCAA Hockey Video Game maybe on the way? How cool would that be to see Ferris State in a game.
http://thepipelineshow.blogspot.com/2010/05/ncaa-hockey-video-game-on-way.html

FSU Alums, Cody Chupp and Greg Rallo playing in the AHL's Calder Cup Finals: http://www.texasstarshockey.com/stats/playerstats/

Thoughts on the 5:05pm start times moving back to 7:05pm. Did you notice a few of the 2nd half games were moved to Tuesdays and Thursdays? I think vs. State.

Go 'Dawgs!

Very good points about the big boys. With all the talk about conference expansion for the Big 10, Pac 10, etc I wouldn't be shocked if a similar type of talk started down the road regarding college hockey conferences (AKA a Big 10 hockey conference). When/If that day comes it could become a very interesting time for us, along with other schools like NMU, LSSU, MTU, etc.

I don't want to go down this road here and now (word of advice: mention Big Ten hockey on this board at your own peril. You have been duly warned), but a BTHC would be very bad for Ferris.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

MLive's forums have been slowing down. I finally decided not all that long back to give it a try on USCHO and D2football.;)
Good to hear that you're getting smarter now. ;)

How you know you've hit rock bottom: when fans of a sh*t school and sh*t program like Ferris calls you a "guaranteed bottom feeder."
I would just like to take a moment to inform the Wastedn Michigan Fan that WMU isn't even the top school on the west side of Michigan go to for academics. Little birdy tells me that its a little school out in a Cornfield west of Grand Rapids would be the top school for that. the school in K-zoo accepts our rejects. :p

Please continue the dog pile Ferris Fans.

Back off. They're #2 in the city of K'zoo ;)

No, you've come to the right place.

Thank you.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Hopefully that carries forward to next fall, resulting in more pucks in the net. God knows we're going to need all the goals we can get.

Very true, but when you got the goaltending you do and a solid D core you may not need a whole lot to win games. Not to mention Bob has a heckuva system up there that is good for 3 or 4 wins a year.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

As we discussed this spring ad nauseum, the problem is that 45% of our goal scoring walked out the door, and no one in this program has any track record at all of being a scorer at the collegiate level, and to rely on incoming freshmen to make that big of an impact is a dangerous proposition at best. You don't finish in the top half of this conference with a handful of 8-goal scorers leading the team.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

You could see Alexander had a lot of potential when he actually played. Hearing this makes me wonder why he only played 15 games or so on the 4th line. The only reason I can think of is because when he was on the ice he would rack up the PIM's pretty quickly.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

That could be the case, given his size. You can't have a guy on the ice with his potential creating his own little parade to the penalty box, especially when our program has enough PIM issues as it is. Maybe the kid needed a year to develop and adjust to the NCAA game. I don't know. We'll see in a couple months. If he's only dressing in 15-20 games this year, then something's wrong.

Why not, all the Ohio st. fans are doing it.... lol

You make a valid point. But when you have goaltending and defense all it takes sometimes is 1 or 2 goals. That isn't asking a lot of your offense.

Unless you're Michigan State circa 1999 and your penalty kill can outscore the opposition's power play for the season, that doesn't work. Somebody's got to put the puck in the net.
