Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Very interesting. Nothing more.

The person this is aimed at knows who they are, and I'm not commenting further.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Speaking of coaching, I had always held out hope that Ferris would go hire Jeff Blashill. After playing at FSU, he was an assistant to Daniels, then to Enrico Blasi at Miami then won a championship while developing young players as head coach with the Indianapolis Ice.

Well, Western just hired him today. I'm incredibly jealous and I'm not looking forward to playing his squads four times a year.

I said it in their form already, but I'll say it again. I think thats a good hire. Has OSU hired anyone yet? If they got the right guy that hockey program could explode similar to ND under Jackson.

I just read through the last 5 pages of this thread. It still burns my *** the way the season ended.

*raises eyebrow*

I'm right there with you Hammer. 55 is still pretty young yet to be retiring. Now if he was getting a better offer at another school or in the private sector, I could see it. But even as much as the subject has been raised here and on a few other corners of the internet, there really wasn't much of a push to get rid of him. He probably could have stayed at least another 5 years easy at Ferris.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

If I had to guess, he's getting the hell out of Dodge before the real financial crunch that's coming for every school in Michigan within the next 2-3 years hits.

Here's part of a Pioneer column on what Kirinovic had to say about finances, at least in football and hockey. (BTW, Ferris is already behind in comparison to other similar CCHA and GLIAC competitors in terms of university funding. Like you said, it's not looking good for that to change. Schools don't have extra money of any kind these days.)

Perhaps the biggest moves outgoing Ferris State athletics director Tom Kirinovic made during his 11-year tenure were moves he chose not to make.

Ferris State’s two highest-profile programs — football and hockey — did not experience coaching changes during Kirinovic’s time as head of the athletic department.

Given that Kirinovic did not hire football coach Jeff Pierce, who was promoted by former AD Larry Marfise following Keith Otterbein’s departure in 1995, nor hockey coach Bob Daniels, who was longtime AD Dean Davenport’s final hire in 1992, as well as the fact that both coaches have experienced some up-and-down seasons during their tenures, it’s kind of surprising that Kirinovic never took the opportunity to go out and hire “his guy.”

In some people’s eyes, Pierce simply took over the juggernaut program that Otterbein built — and it wasn’t built overnight (Otterbein would tell you that) — and rode it into mediocrity that’s become the norm for Ferris State football. After going 22-3 during his first two seasons, Pierce is 69-71 since.

Daniels, on the other hand, now 18 years in, has more losses than wins during his career. His teams have finished between fifth and ninth place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association 13 times.

Kirinovic, who has spoken out publicly during the past year in calling for more institutional funding for athletics, felt it was important to take money into consideration in evaluating the performance of his coaches, including Daniels and Pierce.

“To fairly evaluate someone you’ve got to make sure they have the same tools and resources their opponents have. In both those sports, we know that’s not the case,” Kirinovic said. “We know that in hockey we don’t have what the Michigan and Michigan States have available to us.

“Do we want to win? Of course. But how realistic is it for us to think we’re going to be competitive at that level year after year after year? We’ll have our good seasons, but to consistently be able to compete at that level is pretty tough.

“It’s the same with football,” he continued. “If you don’t have the resources — and you’ve heard Keith Otterbein talk about this — how fair is it to evaluate people if they don’t have the same tools?”

sounds fair.. why expect Daniels to be able to out perform half of the CCHA ...realistically, he has the odd good year, and is competitive, and that should be enough

The media and everyone else needs to quit crying about money. Go out and be successful. Quit making excuses. I think Daniels does well with what he has, but it's a waste of time crying about money in the economic situation Michigan is in right now. When hockey was saved from being cut in the early 1990s it knew the rules it was going to play by.

Daniels does well with the hand he is dealt. The good thing about Daniels is he doesn't spend a whole lot of time crying about what he does not have. He goes out and works his tail off to be as competitive as possible.

I think more so he probably feels like he has done what he can do. You some times get to a point where you've done as much as you can do.

You should start a blog.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

That is an interesting idea. My schedule is filled with better things to do. I prefer to read and offer opinions here and there. I will leaving blogging or whatever up to the experts.

Oh, you don't need to be an "expert" to have a blog. All you need is an opinion. ANYBODY can have a blog.

And I would encourage you to voice your thoughts to Kirinovic about his "crying" about money. Give him a call. Better yet, stop by his office and tell him if you're in Big Rapids. He's on the job until the end of the month. I happen to think the lack of money is a big obstacle to overcome, but he's an employee of a public university that accepts tax dollars. If you don't like the way he's handling something, you should definitely let him know.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

There's no experts here. I've got almost 20,000 posts here and I haven't said a ****ed thing worthwhile.

Good point. Message boards like this to make it fun for people to have their opinions.

Very true. Anybody can do anything they have a desire and talent to do. Good point there. As far as talking to Kirinovic I would say that everything that needs to be said on the issue of money has already been said. He is moving on and I wish him well like a lot of other people. As far as the money issue that comes up over and over again I would say the horse is already dead. No sense in beating on the dead horse's grave.

I do not believe that money is the most significant factor in what determines success. I hate seeing people say that better money can get better athletes. It sends a bad message to the athletes in the program. To put it all on money takes away from the hard work of coaches and administrators running successful teams.
