Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Imagine Vermont getting in after a 8th place finish in a 10 team league and finishing 3 games above 500 on the season with a losing conference record. Somehow Alaska and Vermont got past common sense but not much you can do about it.

Sorry to hear about not making the NCAA's.

I have seen exactly one Ferris fan not complain about not making the NCAA Tournament. I have a great amount of respect for Hammer now. He realizes that whiole Ferris had a great first half, you merely didn't win one of the two games you needed to.

The selection process is clearly explained yet some Ferris fans continue to complain as if you should have made it. You had a good year, but you needed one more win when it counted.

Think of it this way, even if you would have went undefeated until the National Championship game the way you are griping about not making the Tournament is just like saying you should actually be National Champions even after losing the NC game.

You had a good season this year, unfortunately it ended a little prematurely for you. You can sit back today and think "What if?" but tomorrow you should start working on next years Bulldog team so this doesn't happen again next year. Things could be worse, we could have a BCS-like system for hockey (and then u$c/florida would be in the title game every year).

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

I don't see too many Ferris fans complaining. Bob Daniels is sticking up for his team. If there is complaining, it's not much different than any other team that gets close and doesn't get in. I do disagree with him, but he's got every right to vent at this point.

This thing was really close. When you look at the PWR, we had 10 comparisons won, and the three teams that had 11 got in. We were the first team out. It's not because of UAH getting in, either. Sorry. I don't buy that. They played by the same rules everyone else did, and they did what they needed to do. We did not. Keep in mind that the CHA getting their bid in the first place was what led (partly) to Division I going to a 16 team tournament in the first place. The 4-team autobid was a one-year bandaid on a problem that is now fixed, UAH's situation exempted.

If we're going to vent, this is the place to do so. It's our thread, so let's get it out of our system here and now. We've got more than enough time to speculate about next season's team.

You want a reason we didn't get in? I'll give you seven.

5 games above against teams that finished no higher than 8th in the CCHA, and the two from this weekend. Pick any two of them, or any one of the last two. There's the reason we are where we are this afternoon.

Believe me. I get absolutely no satisfaction in doing this. This burns like hell. But I cannot sit here in good conscience and say that we got robbed. If we did get robbed, we mugged ourselves.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

We had so many chances to get into the tournament that we really can't complain now.

Post season analysis:

FSU went 1-8-3 against the top 4 teams in the CCHA (excluding ourselves). Maybe we weren't as good as we thought.

FSU's defense and goaltending were outstanding all season long. Sure there was a bump here or there, but every team has that, and IMHO this defense was the best FSU has ever had. Every defensemen and both goalies are returning with the exception of Matt Case (we could use Wietecha's slapper). So I expect our defense and goaltending to be even better next season.

What about goal scoring you say? Our offense wasn't that much better than any other season. FSU had 118 goals this season, many of which came from Chupp-Haines-Riley. When they were juniors FSU scored only 90 goals. Losing those three does not mean the end of our scoring. Embach, Menke, Kirzinger and Ouellette will all be 10 goal scorers next season. Redmond could have 30 assists.

09-10 = 119 Goals
08-09 = 90 Goals
07-08 = 109 Goals
06-07 = 107 Goals
05-06 = 121 Goals
04-05 = 114 Goals
03-04 = 108 Goals
02-03 = 188 Goals (Kunitz had 79 points)

Looking at the bright side, I feel really good about next years team. Maybe not making the tournament will make the returning players want it that much more.

We've got more than enough time to speculate about next season's team.

I was already composing my post when you wrote this.

They blew multiple chances to get in the tournament. Most notably against Western Michigan the last weekend of the regular season. That's it, they choked and got bounced, that's hockey.

We can complain all we want, but I think MSU has a better argument than even us.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

It's over.

There is no NCAA tournament bid for us.

We've got no one to blame but ourselves. Just by handling our own business this weekend and winning one game we could have ensured that our season could have ended like only one other in Ferris history: in the NCAA tournament. Instead our defense parts like the Red Sea and we allow NMU to walk right in and bury one past Nagle. Ballgame. And instead of being in the position NMU was in tonight, where we could sit back, have some fun and watch a game knowing that we were playing next weekend, we had to go through the #1 seed in the entire NCAA tournament just to wrap up a tournament bid. We know how that one turned out; about as well as expected.

Thank you to our seniors: Cody Chupp, Blair Riley, Casey Haines, Aaron Liwecki, Matt Case, and, yes, Jordan Barber. Thank you for leading this team as far as you could. You guys carried the load this year, and you did everything you possibly could have to get this team to this point.

Thank you also to Pat Nagle, Taylor Nelson, Zach Redmond, Brett Wysopal, Scott Wietecha and the rest of the defensive corps. Our team defense was excellent this season. You also did everything you could.

This one stings. It's going to for a while. It should. We had every opportunity to wrap up a tournament bid by winning one more game, and at times we looked as clueless as Richard Simmons in a whorehouse. We don't get too many opportunities like this, and we just gave this one away. It was a nice season, but a very empty finish. It's going to be a while before we get as good of an opportunity at the NCAA tournament as we just did. It took us 7 years just to get back to this point. Seasons like this are very precious to this program, and we have to cash in on the limited chances we have. We didn't with this one.

No excuses. It's our own **** fault.

We blew it.

Well said. Very sad, yet very true. Stayed off the boards as long as I could after those 2 games. We controlled our fate this past weekend, and against WMU and couldn't cut it. It was a fantastic season, but if you can't put the nails in the coffin I guess they just don't deserve the bid if you ask me.

I don't agree. They got swept badly at home in the second round, even though Michigan may have been better (on paper) than their 7th place finish. At least you swept a really good 6th place UNO team, although they don't play on the road nearly like they do at home. You then got swept by the #4 and #1 teams in the conference in one goal games.

MSU was swooning the entire second half of the season, and part of the reason was Tropp carried them offensively and stopped producing in the second half. They also can point to games they should have won.

FSU split with them, so h2h it was a draw, but their body of work was nominally better in the second half, IMO.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Bob,
We beat you twice this year! Head to Head, we where a better team!
Go Nooks!

Actually, that's not how you got in. If one looks at the Pairwise team comparison, FERRIS gets the point from Alaska. Yes they won twice (2 pts), but FERRIS won the other three comaparisons (RPI, TUC and COP), winning the pairwise point. Unfortunatey for the FERRIS faithful, Alaska won 11 comparison, we only won 10, but we did get the point from Alaska, which hurts even more.

I agree with Hammer, we did ourselves in! Just look at thelast two games of the season against WMU.

On a positive note, the CHA will not get an autobid next year! We now should work extra hard to get UaH into a league so they don't fall by the wayside. I'd love to make that road trip, maybe over Christmas??????

“I cannot fathom how Fairbanks got in ahead of us,” he said. “I have a hard time explaining that one to our players.”

I don’t follow the PRW so I’m not sure how we kept in the running either. But I’m glad for the team and the program. Of course, we’re just “happy to be there” and will probably be overwhelmed by all the glitz and glamour that is Worcester. :) But I’m sure the team will do their best.

We did get points in every conference series throughout the year, including Miami, MSU, Michigan, UNO, NMU, OSU, and down the line. Maybe not a lot of points, but points nonetheless. We were undefeated in non-conference play, including games against Michigan, Mercyhurst, Robert Morris, RPI, and two against intrastate rival UAA. Maybe not the most feared line-up, but undefeated nonetheless. And those teams went on and beat good teams here or there so maybe we lucked out. And we got that all important sweep of FSU. Maybe early in the season, but a sweep nonetheless. Of course, FSU went on to win a few games, so I guess we lucked out again.

I would have liked to see Ferris get in, not at our expense, but nonetheless.
So, they may call us undeserving...but at least they called us.

We still get a participation banner don’t we? :)

Go Alaska!!!!!!!!!!!! Too bad your first trip to the Tournament you get sent to an almost impossissible region to win but you're there. Good luck!!!!!!!!!

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Looking at the last two at-large teams in the tourney, when you add common sense to the argument, they wouldn't be there. Alaska doesn't "deserve" to be in there over Michigan State or Ferris State and Vermont doesn't deserve to be in there over Maine. Ultimately, I'd love to see the committee be able to choose the last two at large bids, but that would open up a can of worms and particularly if there was a big name team on the bubble.

You knew the rules, the score, etc. going into the whole ordeal. You didn't make it. Would I have liked to see Ferris in the tourny? Sure. Would I have liked sparty in the tourny? No, they're pathetic.

It is what it is.

One question I have is, would Ferris have made it if they tied Miami?

possiable, I think most of the math showed that Ferris would have likely been in as long as they had won one game this weekend. Might have needed a NMU win as well to get in with a tie.

Ferris advancing to the Joe and Alaska staying at home hurt Ferris and helped Alaska in the pairwise. I think a system in which losing is more beneficial than winning is fundamentally flawed.
