Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

I'm not concerned about what other fanbases have to say, nor am I concerned about past history at the Joe. Neither issue will come into play this weekend.

Believe it or not, I don't even care about winning the CCHA tournament. If we get to the final, we're playing with house money at that point. All that is at stake is an automatic bid, and we can clinch an at-large bid of our own simply by winning one game this weekend. This program has made the NCAA's exactly once in its history. I want the second appearance to happen next weekend. One win will ensure that. Anything more is gravy.

Let's focus on the task at hand, boys.

Good luck !!

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Good luck !!

Thank you. We need all the help and support we can get.

Here's our program history

I was a freshman in '92-'93. That was a fun year, knocking MSU out at the Joe and ending their season, and going toe to toe with Miami before losing in OT on a bad goal. But after that it went south in a hurry and stayed that way for a while. You'll see that there isn't much postseason success as well. One league title that no one saw coming, and one tournament appearance (and win).

Now maybe the rest of you understand why I want this NCAA tournament bid so badly.

I believe that the game is being replayed on FSD at 1 AM if anybody is unfortunate and can't watch it or be there.

Only a few more hours now. Get the win!

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Just home from the Joe.

That one hurt. Really badly. Everything about it. The fact that we lost, as well as the way we lost it. To have a skater walk right in and get the shot that he did, NOT EVEN 2 MINUTES INTO OVERTIME, is completely unfathomable.

This one might have been fatal. We're 11th in the PWR, but the mountain just got a lot taller. Now we've got to beat Miami in the consolation, or hope that NMU can beat Michigan. We've also got to root for a lot of chalk to hold in the other conference tournaments.

I just ran a PWR scenario. If we win or tie tomorrow, we're in the tournament, plain and simple. If we lose, and Michigan beats NMU, we're #15, and on the outside, looking in. If we lose and NMU wins, we're fine.

We probably need to prepare ourselves to deal with the fact that tomorrow might very well be the last game that we play this season, and it's a god****ed shame.

Michigan winning was really the worst possible thing that could happen. And considering they not only won, but FLATTENED Miami leads me to believe that NMU is in trouble.

Not sure how Ferris is going to compete with Miami. I wonder if Reichard will start after getting pulled though. It's do-or-die now.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

I'd put my money on Knapp starting this afternoon for Miami.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Saw the game on tv. Too many times this year Ferris takes an in-game vacation. On the plus side, I saw a lot of nice play from non-seniors (Menke, Kirzinger, Redmond, Embach). Ferris' 4th goal was flat out good hockey. Those are the kind of goals that the best teams score. Thought the officiating was good except for the first Ferris penalty. I thought the guy just lost an edge, but what do I know?

The Miami All-Access piece between periods was great, IMO. If I was a young hockey player watching that, I would be telling my dad that I'll be a RedHawk one day. Great PR for them.

Well...back to nail-biting and praying.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Now that I've had a second to breathe, one of two teams needs to win tonight for us to have a pulse:

Northern Michigan
Sacred Heart

Don't count on it. See post #809.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

we passed up too many shots today trying to make just one more pass.

go wildcats!

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

hammer, wouldnt a cornell win and a bc win be good for us too?

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Yeah, we need the chalk to hold there, too. A Michigan win along with Sacred Heart winning doesn't help us if there's a mess in the ECAC and HEA.

I still think we're dead. More scenarios than not point to us being the 1st team out.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

when is the last time the 2 and 3 seeds from the CCHA didn't make the tourney?

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

It's over.

There is no NCAA tournament bid for us.

We've got no one to blame but ourselves. Just by handling our own business this weekend and winning one game we could have ensured that our season could have ended like only one other in Ferris history: in the NCAA tournament. Instead our defense parts like the Red Sea and we allow NMU to walk right in and bury one past Nagle. Ballgame. And instead of being in the position NMU was in tonight, where we could sit back, have some fun and watch a game knowing that we were playing next weekend, we had to go through the #1 seed in the entire NCAA tournament just to wrap up a tournament bid. We know how that one turned out; about as well as expected.

Thank you to our seniors: Cody Chupp, Blair Riley, Casey Haines, Aaron Liwecki, Matt Case, and, yes, Jordan Barber. Thank you for leading this team as far as you could. You guys carried the load this year, and you did everything you possibly could have to get this team to this point.

Thank you also to Pat Nagle, Taylor Nelson, Zach Redmond, Brett Wysopal, Scott Wietecha and the rest of the defensive corps. Our team defense was excellent this season. You also did everything you could.

This one stings. It's going to for a while. It should. We had every opportunity to wrap up a tournament bid by winning one more game, and at times we looked as clueless as Richard Simmons in a whorehouse. We don't get too many opportunities like this, and we just gave this one away. It was a nice season, but a very empty finish. It's going to be a while before we get as good of an opportunity at the NCAA tournament as we just did. It took us 7 years just to get back to this point. Seasons like this are very precious to this program, and we have to cash in on the limited chances we have. We didn't with this one.

No excuses. It's our own **** fault.

We blew it.

I'm really sorry, Hammer. I thought Ferris deserved to be in regardless, and they would have been if it hadn't been for a few conference tourney upsets. Five CCHA teams would have been great. But, you are right, ultimately you got to take care of business yourself.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Disappointing that it turned out the way it did. It's a shame they couldn't have started cold and ended hot instead of starting so hot and ending so flat. Still, I've been going to games for 4 years, and it was incredible just to get to go to the Joe and see them have a chance.

Thanks Bulldogs for a tremendous season, hopefully next year we can make it back.

Keep your head held high Ferris. You had a terrific season. Too bad you just missed the NCAA's.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Bob Daniels' reaction - here's a small portion of the Pioneer's story:

Alabama-Huntsville, which finished the regular season 10-17-3, received the CHA’s automatic bid after beating Robert Morris, another sub-.500 team, and Niagara, also a sub-.500 team, which upset regular-season champion Bemidji State in the semifinals.

“I brought it up at our coaches meeting last year that I didn’t think the CHA deserved an automatic bid. With the way our conference tournament (CCHA) is set up, if you can navigate your way through 12 teams and win it, like Michigan just did, then you deserve a bid,” Daniels said. “When you just show up for one weekend and beat two below-.500 teams and get in, then I have a problem with that.”

Daniels went on to say he’s in favor of a small conference having an automatic bid, but he’s not in this case because the CHA was disbanding after this season.

“I’m all for creating opportunities for student-athletes and all of that,” he said, “but the conference only had four teams -- you’re suppose to have six to get an automatic bid -- and those teams were disbanding anyway. That wound up hurting us.”

The four CCHA teams that made the field were: Michigan (automatic bid); regular-season champion Miami, which received the No. 1 overall seed; Northern Michigan, which finished fourth and then was the runner-up in the conference tournament; and Alaska, which finished fifth and was swept in the tournament quarterfinals by Northern Michigan.

Daniels, obviously, took exception to Alaska receiving a bid over his team, which finished higher in the league and advanced further in the conference tournament.

“I cannot fathom how Fairbanks got in ahead of us,” he said. “I have a hard time explaining that one to our players.”
