Elmira College 2011-2012

Re: Elmira College 2011-2012

I see in the local news that Chemung County has began foreclosure proceedings on the First Arena which could potentially spell a move for the Jackals if the situation isn't rectified...maybe the ice would be better in there.

wow that cant be good. Does that family also own the rink?
Love the Domes but a new barn would go a long ways for this program.

Hobart v EC Pt III

Hobart v EC Pt III

If I'm not mistaken, this will be the fourth time this season that EC has scored within the first 90 seconds, then proceeded to daydream through the remainder of the game. That was the most lackluster, uninspired poor excuse of a hockey contest that I can remember. Tonight they played the first 10 minutes, and the last 10, but were no where to be found in the middle 40 ... and the game took an interminable 2 hours and 30 minutes.

I do wish when they've decided not to show up, they'd at least have the courtesy to let us know, so that we don't waste our collective evenings. After having made both Vermont trips, I'll be skipping the Utica game. If the team doesn't have the decency to show up, then neither do I.

Anyone know where I can buy one of those MIB red-flash-erase-your-memory black devices?

Ahhh, the deneuralizer!! Been looking for one of those for years, but ultimately I end-up settling for the cheapest substitute... The bottom of a 12-pack of premium brew. :o

That's all it takes these days... waaaay past my prime. :(

Re: Hobart v EC Pt III

It was difficult for EC or Hobart for that matter to develop any type of flow to their game because the refs were blowing the whistles every two seconds! One thing I don't understand is the ref would blow the whistle for icing 2-3 seconds after the puck crossed the red line. I thought it was icing as soon as it crossed the line? This didn't help things at the end of the game.

New this year is that icing is a "race to the dots"... no automatic whistle at the time the puck crosses the goal line. Icing is determined once the players get to the faceoff dots and dependant upon who the officals believe will get to the puck first at that time... which will dictate whether the icing is upheld or waived-off.

This kinda hurts you (as it did Elmira tonight) in the closing minutes of the game being down a goal. The opposition can keep icing the puck taking precious seconds off the clock while you scramble down the ice to reach the faceoff dots.

Technically, it's a race to the imaginary line connecting the tops of the faceoff circles, but most linesmen seem to think it's a race to the dots...

Also, that was the rule last year, too. This is the 2nd year of the current rule period (and this offseason is a rule change year! No icing while shorthanded! Offending team must clear D zone on a delayed penalty! Unintentional hand passes are legal in all zones! Half shields and Visors instead of full cages!)

May none of those come to pass. There are so many unintended consequences lurking in those proposals that will not have a positive effect on the game as we know it.

Didn't they already try shorthanded icing? They did it during an exhibition game in Oswego at the beginning of last year. It was ridiculous. Every time a team cleared the puck while on the PK, it was icing.

They also tried it out several years ago, and allowed it to be used in in-season tournaments. I remember that they used it in Times-Argus tournament that year. In the 60's this rule applied in international amateur play (along with a rule that had teams changing ends halfway through the third period to equalize the view for fans.)

Re: Cortland @ EC

Re: Cortland @ EC

If they go to shorthanded icing, you will see a team with a 50% power play.

Re: Cortland @ EC

Re: Cortland @ EC

After looking at the stats, I think I'd like to up that to 60%, and it's not out of the realm of possibility to see a team average 2 out of 3 on the power play.

And it may well lead to the refs calling fewer penalties, because the consequences of a penalty will be more than currently.

I think the defensive team will still ice the puck to stop the pressure and a scoring chance which will lead to even more stopages and making the game longer. Are you going to let a team score or ice it and try to win a face off and try to clear the puck to the neutral zone?

The other thing is that when they do that, they won't be allowed to change their penalty killers, so even if they ice the puck to get a face-off, it's still going to create problems.

Kudos to RLM Sports

Kudos to RLM Sports

I feel shame. While “clickin’ around on the internets” this morning, I discovered that I had no idea about the amount of coverage RLM Sports is providing on Elmira College Hockey... both Men’s and Women’s home events. Webcasts, local venue FM simulcast, blogs... knew nothing about it until now. A broadcast schedule can be found on the RLM Sports website.

Some really nice pictures from last night’s Senior Night are displayed in the blog from that event. Fantastic group shots towards the end of the slideshow. Well done, RLM Sports... well done.

Cheers!!!
