Elmira College 2011-2012

Ma'ville v EC pt 3

Ma'ville v EC pt 3

- The officials tonight actually had a [refreshing] clue, and the game was won on the ice
- Great clean hitting - a number of players skated feebly to the bench after some solid body checks
- To their credit, Ma'ville out-hustled and out-muscled EC, and fore-checked relentlessly
- When EC gave up chances, Ma'ville buried them, the inverse was not true
- EC puck handling continues to be a bit sloppy which costs them a few Grade A scoring chances
- Lemieux was stellar
Edit: CHS shows EC had 58 shots!

The NCAA lights grow ever dimmer

Re: Ma'ville v EC pt 3

Sorry, JPB, I have to disagree with you on two counts. I thought the referees were better than last night, but I didn't think they did a good job at all. I also don't think it was by any means a clean game. There were a lot of after-the-whistle cheap shots that Manhattanville was dishing out early, and the refs' lack of calls caused the game to be very chippy.

Re: Cortland @ EC

I thought there were spurts when EC played well, and spurts when Manhattanville dominated play. Manhattanville knew they couldn't be swept 3 of 3, and they came to play a full 60. I don't however, think it's the end of the world yet for EC as some might think. We need to win out now, though. I think Manhattanville has gotten used to the new coach and is much improved from early in the season. Arlen Marshall needs to get a grip on it and keep under control.

Re: Ma'ville v EC pt 3

I thought the ice was rough as well. That led to many passes being missed because the puck was jumping all over the place. Not surprised considering the women's team played at three this afternoon. NCAA lights may be dimmer but lets be realistic here, you can't expect them to beat Manhattanville, Utica and Hobart in all remaining games no matter how hard they try. Sometimes the bounces go the other teams way and tonight Manhattanville got those bounces.

Yes the Women played at three yesterday before the Men's game, and the same can be said on Alumni weekend. Bad idea if you ask me but what can you do.

Norwich plays doubleheaders all the time. There was actually even a club hockey game right after the men's game last time. (Thank the lord I didn't have to stat that one!)

The ice is the same for everyone out there.

By my count Norwich men only share the ice 4 times out of the teams 14 home regular season games....not really "all the time". While Elmira will share the ice 3/11.

The men will share the ice for 6 out of their 14 regular season home games this year. They played the second game twice at the Northfield Savings Bank Tournament.

You're correct I guess "all the time" was a little bit exaggerated. However, the point still remains. The ice is the same for everyone.

Re: Elmira College 2011-2012

yes the ice IS the same for everyone but there is a marked difference when the ice gets to sit for 5 hrs or so b4 the game

Not saying it isnt. However, everyone is playing on the same ice and to bring it up after a loss makes it sound like its an excuse (whether intentional or not) on why the team lost.

Re: Ma'Ville v EC pt3

Trying to hit-upon all topics...

Overall I believe that we saw better officiating Saturday night in comparison to Friday… overall being the key word. However, with the waived-off goal in the third when the net came off, I must admit that forced me to break out a “We want Everett” chant. :D

As for NCAA Tournament possibilities, I have my opinions - both pessimistic and optomistic, but I will keep them to myself for now. With the way the whole selection process seems to work, there is no right or wrong opinion... even as late as week 18! There is only retrospective “dumb luck” when the teams are actually announced, evidenced by the “didn’t see that coming” and “[insert team X] got screwed” comments that tend to be made following the process every year. :p

Ice Conditions: I have a sneaky suspicion there may be growing ice issues at the MAC. No hard-proof, but it just “feels” like some significant off-season maintenance may be in-order. Public Skate was cancelled between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I cannot recall the actual reason that was cited in the recorded message, but I think it had something to do with poor ice conditions at the time. The area in front of one of the creases (North??) also seems to take quite some time to freeze-up after the Olympia resurfaces it. Yeah, it’s one of the last patches on the surface to see the iron beast, but the liquid just seems to be present longer than it used to be according to this old man’s memory. But Prez is absolutely right – this is by no means an excuse for the outcome of the game... “It is what it is” (I know, terrible phrase - sorry ‘bout that!).

And a final note, it was refreshing to see the M’Ville Coach acknowledge EC as still being #1 as he walked-off the ice last night. :D

I see in the local news that Chemung County has began foreclosure proceedings on the First Arena which could potentially spell a move for the Jackals if the situation isn't rectified...maybe the ice would be better in there.

Maybe those purple seats will finally be put to good use? ;)

There's some scuttlebut on the street that the foreclosure procedings are the first of not-a-few changes to occur with Elmira's relationship with the AFRs and the ECHL.
