Re: Elections 2012:What unites us is greater than what divides us

....However, that graph shows unemployment dropping from 1932-36, then shooting up in 1937 and falling rather quickly again in 1938 - not World War II. Now, if you want to say unemployment dropped because we were gearing up for war, you can argue that but you'll have to convince the guy at Flagdude's site because he's convinced we were actually supporting Germany and Japan...I don't think those viewpoints are quite compatible. There were certainly elements within the United States that wanted us to support Germany but I really don't think our friends on the political right want to discuss that. :)

i don't care what some jobber blabs on any whacko website... we got enough of that here. :)

fdr came in, started his new deal. us govt spend money building chit.. i think that increased federal spending buy 50% or somethin, right? after four yrs of that they realized they couldn't do that forever and cut back on the spending and taxed some.. since they were the only people spending, that cause the growth to slow and recession. then in 1938 people all over started prepping to either take over the world or defend themselves... (lend lease came about after GB spent all their assets, US neutrality required payment, not credit. wasn't until GB et.al paid us in all their gold and stuff in 38-39-early 40 that they required credit and thus 'lend lease'.

so again, a bump after fdr came in with new deal spending. but that couldn't last and came to a close. then the early participants in ww2 started spending and we gladly took it in.
just cause the us didn't participate with troops until 1942 doesn't mean we didn't profit in the years before that.

Re: Elections 2012:What unites us is greater than what divides us

..and nobody got rich building the tva. govt jobs are **** jobs. real wealth wasn't created by the new deal; it was created destroying, then rebuilding.

Right. World War II began in 1938.

Wow- I don't think I ever saw a mookie post with more than 2-3 lines

That's a Catholic doctrine, but Protestant Christianity views Mary as born sinful, just like everyone else since Adam and Eve's fall. Mary is obviously quite admirable, but in the end the main point was Jesus divine conception and birth, not Mary. The whole pray to Mary thing Catholics do has always been a puzzler to me.
Mary was pretty much invisible until the the sister of a Byzantine ruler was being sidelined by the church. She started the whole Mary thing as a way to help women get a foot hold in the church. Saw a whole documentary on it once- it was absolutely fascinating.

I don't see a differentiation between what Paul and Jesus taught. They seem very compatable to me.
Jesus loved all his disciples and gave them equal respect. Paul spends an awful lot of time telling us why women are not supposed to be doing anything important. Should have scrolled further. :p

I see huge differences. For example, one is a mysoginist and one is not.

Speaking of mookie- I keep getting these stupid emails about the Muslim loving president. This from the same set of people who were sending me the alarmist emails about his deep involvement with the radical Christian church that was pushing what ever agenda they thought at the time. Make up your mind already! Is the radical Christian church really a front for the radical Muslim mosque that he is a part of? Gasp! breaking news at 6!!

I read that we'd have to reduce defense spending by roughly $200B just to get back down to Reagan's level in inflation-adjusted dollars. Of course, I'm sure that won't stop various members of the defense establishment from claiming we'll instantly be overrun by Islamists/Iran/the Chinese/the North Koreans if we go forward with any cuts at all.

Re: Elections 2012:What unites us is greater than what divides us

I find people's devotion to Paul's teachings over Jesus the most puzzling.
Sola scriptura.

Paul's in the Bible so his words are magic. It's odd that the Protestant movements that were so incisive and critical of the non-Biblical encrustations of the Roman Catholic clergy's obfuscations, wish fulfillment and personal opinion didn't come to the (to me) obvious conclusion that Paul's Biblical writings are likewise obfuscations, wish fulfillment and personal opinion. After all, what got included in the Bible just came down to editorial decisions that had nothing to do with Jesus.

And let's not even get started on John the Revelator...

The Mary cult also helped the Catholic church co-opt the fertility goddesses of the agricultural religions of Northern Europe. In those areas Mary was a big demotion for women, since the Earth Mother used to run the whole show, even though she let the the male Gods think they were hot stuff. Marriage has always worked the same way. :D

There's certainly nothing in Jesus' recorded (or remembered, or invented, or whatever) words that presages the hardcore "social conservatism" of Paul and the later, Sanduskyesque Church Fathers. The Patristic writings on women are creepy, and it should be kept in mind that the men laying down those laws were ideologically and biographically analogous to the Muslim ulama that gave us Sharia Law.

Putting crap out in the field is going to do nothing for the economy of windmills, that work has to be done in a lab. Maybe beta in the field but whats in Maine is hard some new earth shattering breakthrough technology.. The electrical grid doesn't turn up and down on a dime, you can't shut a coal fired plant down to accommodate a windy day. They plan on so much power and as consumers we demand it be there.

So you are saying the government should do a better job of vetting these projects before they invest our tax dollars? No argument there. But that is like asking Kim Kardashian to do a better job of picking husbands or a donkey to play basketball.

As for the best way to develop the technology, I have, at best, a cursory knowledge of the industry and would have assumed the wind farms I see in the Pocono mountains or proposed off the coast of NJ were the next phase in a logical progression. To your point, if they are funded primarily with tax dollars, nobody cares if they are wasted so i have no idea if the numbers have ever made sense.

Drones and **** like that are more expensive than foot soldiers. People would rather spend money to fight than line up grunts and have them march.

These I've not seen :D.

I doubt it. A foot soldier has a training, supply and logistics chain that would make your head hurt. Not to mention that you don't have to pay the drone's widow benefits and give its dronelette children tax breaks and medical care.

Re: Elections 2012:What unites us is greater than what divides us

To Austria it did.
To those in the Sudetenland it did.
France built their "line" before that.
World War II began in 1789. Everything after that was just playing out the string.

Oh, We still have those grunts... They just don't do all the dying anymore. If only we could have outsourced them to Bangalore we would hav seen that cost saving!!

Re: Elections 2012:What unites us is greater than what divides us

Are we not still fighting it?? Didn't Churchill carve out to middle east one night after a victory cigar? :p
Depends who you ask. The Crazy Christians think the Middle East war began in 1096. Personally I think it started on May 26, 1908.

You may talk o' gin and beer
When you're quartered safe out 'ere,
An' you're sent to penny-fights an' Aldershot it;
But when it comes to slaughter
You will do your work on water,
An' you'll lick the bloomin' boots of 'im that's got it.
Now in Injia's sunny clime,
Where I used to spend my time
A-servin' of 'Er Majesty the Queen,
Of all them blackfaced crew
The finest man I knew
Was our regimental bhisti, Gunga Din.
He was "Din! Din! Din!
"You limpin' lump o' brick-dust, Gunga Din!
"Hi! Slippy hitherao!
"Water, get it! Panee lao
"You squidgy-nosed old idol, Gunga Din."

The uniform 'e wore
Was nothin' much before,
An' rather less than 'arf o' that be'ind,
For a piece o' twisty rag
An' a goatskin water-bag
Was all the field-equipment 'e could find.
When the sweatin' troop-train lay
In a sidin' through the day,
Where the 'eat would make your bloomin' eyebrows crawl,
We shouted " Harry By!"
Till our throats were bricky-dry,
Then we wopped 'im 'cause 'e couldn't serve us all.
It was "Din! Din! Din!
"You 'eathen, where the mischief 'ave you been?
"You put some juldee in it
"Or I'll marrow you this minute
"If you don't fill up my helmet, Gunga Din!"

'E would dot an' carry one
Till the longest day was done;
An' 'e didn't seem to know the use o' fear.
If we charged or broke or cut,
You could bet your bloomin' nut,
'E'd be waitin' fifty paces right flank rear.
With 'is mussick' on 'is back,
'E would skip with our attack,
An' watch us till the bugles made "Retire,"
An' for all 'is dirty 'ide
'E was white, clear white, inside
When 'e went to tend the wounded under fire!
It was "Din! Din! Din!"
With the bullets kickin' dust-spots on the green
When the cartridges ran out,
You could hear the front-ranks shout,
"Hi! ammunition-mules an' Gunga Din!"

I sha'n't forgit the night
When I dropped be'ind the fight
With a bullet where my belt-plate should 'a' been.
I was chokin' mad with thirst,
An' the man that spied me first
Was our good old grinnin', gruntin' Gunga Din.
'E lifted up my 'ead,
An' he plugged me where I bled, An' 'e guv me 'arf-a-pint o' water green.
It was crawlin' and it stunk,
But of all the drinks I've drunk,
I'm gratefullest to one from Gunga Din.
It was "Din! Din! Din!
"'Ere's a beggar with a bullet through 'is spleen"
"'E's chawin' up the ground,
"An' 'e's kickin' all around:
"For Gawd's sake git the water, Gunga Din!

'E carried me away
To where a dooli lay,
An' a bullet come an' drilled the beggar clean.
'E put me safe inside,
An' just before 'e died,
"I 'ope you liked your drink" sez Gunga Din.
So I'll meet 'im later on
At the place where 'e is gone
Where it's always double drill and no canteen.
'E'll be squattin' on the coals
Givin' drink to poor ****ed souls,
An' I'll get a swig in hell from Gunga Din!
Yes, Din! Din! Din!
You Lazarushian-leather Gunga Din!
Though I've belted you and flayed you,
By the livin' Gawd that made you,
You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!
