Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

CNN reporting Akin is staying in the race as of this afternoon MO time.

Could the GOP or Tea Party sponsor a write-in campaign at this point? Does MO have a sore loser law?

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

Nice try at distracting from the major smear campaign against Ryan that's underway because of a statement Akin made. But, hey, if the smear works in your favor, no problem?

2nd try here:

So other than the offensive language Akin used, how are their opinions different on not granting an exception for rape victims?

It's about 2.5 months to the general election and a lot can happen in the meantime. Short term, he stepped in it, big time. Who hasn't at one point or another hasn't opened mouth and inserted foot?

He's done a mea culpa, probably needs to do a few more in the next few days, and then get back to the issues that are important to the voters of Missouri.

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

By this point, there are some guys at the top of the GOP pyramid who are just chanting "shut up shut up shut up", I think.

According to a report by Sioux City, Iowa CBS affiliate KMEG, King said he hasn't heard of instances in which young victims of statutory rape or incest become pregnant.

"Well I just haven't heard of that being a circumstance that's been brought to me in any personal way, and I'd be open to discussion about that subject matter," King said.

Just saw an ad on here to register to vote online. Looks like it's not the republicans who are touting "vote early and often"...

The TP would not put up a competing candidate because Akin is right for them ideologically. I am sure they have already turned this into them somehow being the victim.

The GOP can't put up a competing candidate, as much as they'd like to. This is still a winnable election (McCaskill has lukewarm Dem support as a blue dog, and she has problems with independents for potential violations of the transparency pledge that helped her win the seat in the first place). Their only hope is for Akin to "decide" to spend more time saying stupid things to his family. Ordinarily they would be able to leverage him hard, but he's old and he's one of those fanatics who thinks "you don't take flak unless you're over the target." He simply can't conceive (so to speak) what he said was so asinine and hateful.

I'm sure the RNC Director of Large Chunks of Money and Property which Just Happen to Fall from the Sky is negotiating with him as we speak, but unless they can come to a deal he's got very little to lose by staying in. He only lost about 10 points in the overnights, so that puts him just a couple points down, and the public has the attention span of a gnat.

Thank you for the non-screaming tone of your posts. It's a nice change of pace.

I think the burden is on Scooby, Rover, etc. who are claiming they are exactly the same. But, that would interfere with the efforts to smear Ryan over something Akin said. But I realize this is election season, so the smear is on full spead ahead.

Scooby's last post of Ryan=Akin is a pretty broad, though straightforward at least, claim.

I've never had a foot in mouth incident of this magnitude. Making a statement that implies rape victims who get pregnant must have enjoyed the act isn't putting just your foot in your mouth, its putting your whole body in up to your @ s s.

Regarding Akin, I say he represents conservatives in general and most likely Missouri righties in particular. That's his base who probably agrees with him. All this stuff about forcing him out is stupid. He was chosen by the voters in the primary. Now they can decide if they want him in the general election.

A good point was made by some pundit about how little influence all these GOP elders have on him. He wasn't the establishment candidate in the first place so he doesn't owe his rise to party hacks. Also he's 65 I think so he's not going to get another chance at this. He also can't run for his House seat at this point.

EDIT: Scooby, good show! You just mopped the floor with Bob.

But unless I've misunderstood the meaning of your posts, you are the one that seems to be saying that Ryan's position on the abortion issue is not the same as Akin's. And other than the offensive language Akin used, I cant see the difference, so I'm aksing you to help clarify.

Actually I was responding to claims that Akin and Ryan were exactly the same and by inference, this is a big hit for Ryan, whereas Joe Biden's telling a black audience that Romney and Ryan will put them back in chains largely gets a free pass.

I'm pretty sure that on both sides laws regarding rape and abortion are issues that are pretty important to everybody, even the voters of Missouri.

Huh. So slavery is no big deal in your eyes. Got it.

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

Sorry. He sponsored legislation with the "forcible rape" language in it. It's the same definition change as "legitimate" rape. Akin and Ryan are the same.

The language was inserted to take into consideration "statutory rape," where the female may consent. And had nothing to do with "legitimacy" or Akin's nonsense. But, you knew that, didn't you?

This may be the last lifeboat off the RMS Titanic, y'all are jumping in and to h*ll with the women and children.
