Re: Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

Alcee Hastings (D-sleeze) is STILL b*tching that 6 months ago Allen West chose Chick-fil-a to cater the regular CBC gathering (the members pay for the lunch on a rotating basis). What's really rich about this is that Hastings, arbitor of menu sensitivity and nursing this grudge for six months, took a 150,000 dollar bribe as a federal judge to go easy on a defendant appearing before him and was impeached and removed. How can that possibly compare to chicken biscuits?

BTW, now that Loughner has pleaded guilty in the Tucson shootings, anybody know where we stand on the Palin indictments?

So the media wing of His Hopeychangeyness' campaign now acts as analysts of his opponant's TV spots? Given NBC's recent record of deliberate distortion in the Martin/Zimmerman incident, who could possibly doubt their honesty and objectivity?

And now that the new Obama Super Pac spot has been exposed as a tissue of lies (the one that blames Romney personally for the cancer death of a lady) can we assume His Preciousness will demand it be taken down? And will these same two NBC schmucks analyze and criticize the spot? I won't hold my breath.

if all somebody has known their whole life is biased, how would they know? The N Korea gold medalist who says it is all because of their late leader firmly believes that is true and the olympic delegation keeps them in hotels to prevent any other thoughts from entering their heads.

In this day and age, virtually all news is biased by those who deliver it. Is there a network out there that can say none of its decisions are influenced by their corporation's interests, their aggregate political position, the bias of any individual reporter, editor or producer?

The funny thing is when a conservative says Fox is fair and balanced but the rest are liberal propagandists or a liberal states that only Fox distorts the message...they all do it, but for decades there was only 'the media'... nobody suspected that there was an opportunity for the news to be massaged. Maybe in 1940 it was unbiased but it hasn't been for quite a while.

That isn't to say 100% of everything is biased...I'm pretty sure the weather and the sports scores are not politically influenced.

I don't know what's going to be more fun, watching Mittens get crushed on Election Day or reading you try to talk yourself into his candidacy for the next 3 months! Heads I win, tails you lose I guess. :D:p

Re: Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

Way to go Godwin with it. Obama has been in for nearly 4 years and is one vote away from being out of office.

I don't think you understood. I'm not saying that Obama is a communist dictator or like Hitler somehow. My response that granting the power to "make a decision and then go with it no matter what the legislature or the citizens think about it because it's for their own good and we'll just call it 'leadership'" might not always end well, no matter how popular the person is that you're now granting that power to. What I mean is, Castro is an analogy, not a precedent. In the case of the U.S. the bad result could simply be an extra trillion in the debt that was never authorized to be spent by more than one person.

In response to Rover's essay, I wasn't clear on the whole "gutting welfare reform" charge before, but it turns out Rover's right. Obama's changes will in fact make work requirements more stringent than they were and in that way do the opposite of what Romney reportedly has charged. This may be good or bad, but doesn't really change the fact that he unilaterally over-wrote previous legislation to suit his liking. Which was what I thought was at issue.

So again, no worries that Barry Obama will be a communist dictator. There is some concern that we're allowing our executives to accumulate too much power in the name of "leadership".

Re: Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

Romney does not seem to have had a problem getting GOP lifers in line for him, despite his former life as a moderate and the whole thing about belonging to a 19th century sex cult.

I didn't expect him to. Major party nominees always enjoy 99.9% loyalty from the party faithful, regardless of whatever narrative of doom the press comes up with in April to get them through the summer.

This has been a trend since the 1960's, and there is a major villain of the piece: Congress. The legislature has been more than happy to defer more and more to the president, because they want to hide from responsibility for the consequences of any action.

To fix the imbalance of powers we have to fix Congress and force it to take on more power. The only way to do that is to give the majority party in each body more power so that Congress can act more decisively. Getting rid of anonymous holds and the filibuster is a start.

I got a pollster call last night, I love messing with those people. She didn't say so, but seemed a bit confused that I'm certain to vote Obama, yet conservative, and also voting Hoekstra (R) for Senate. And remain independent of party affiliation.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

The race to the bottom continues: Romney vs. the economy.

Romney’s Popularity Stays Low, Obama’s is Better, but with Challenges

Mitt Romney is laboring under the lowest personal popularity ratings for a presumptive presidential nominee in midsummer election-year polls back to 1984. But Barack Obama has his own challenges in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, notably among registered voters, and with much weaker numbers among men than women.

Forty percent of Americans overall view Romney favorably, 49 percent unfavorably – leaving him underwater, at least numerically, in 10 straight http://www.langerresearch.com/uploads/1127a36FavorabilityNo36.pdf/Post polls this year. A new high of 30 percent now see him “strongly” unfavorably, nearly double his strongly favorable score.

OBAMA – Obama, for his part, is seen more positively than negatively among all adults, 53-43 percent favorable-unfavorable, but slips to nearly an even split, 49-47 percent, among registered voters. That’s still better than Romney’s 42-50 percent among registered voters, but less sharply so.

Those Evangelical Christians voting for the World Workers Party who show up in polls from time to time?

That's me.

I used to have to lie to mess with them. Now I just express my honest confusion.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

based on data from the IRS and from the Congressional Budget office,...

Every major marginal rate income tax cut of the last 50 years—1964, 1981, 1986 and 2003—was followed by an unexpectedly large increase in tax revenues, a surge in taxes paid by the rich, and a more progressive tax code—i.e., the share of taxes paid by the richest 1% rose.

For example, from 1980 to 2007, three tax rate cuts brought the highest marginal tax rate to 35% from 70%. Congressional Budget Office data show that when the tax rate was 70%, the richest 1% paid 18% of all federal income taxes. With the rate down to 35% in 2008, the share of taxes paid by the rich doubled to 40%.

The Tax Reform Act of 1986, which chopped the top income tax rate to 28% from 50%, was probably most similar to the Romney tax proposal because both were designed to lower rates and broaden the tax base. CBO and Martin Feldstein of the National Bureau of Economic Research found that the 1986 tax reform increased the share of taxes paid by the rich (to about 25% from 21% before the reform), in part because their reported taxable income rose as they lost tax shelters. Many businesses also changed their tax status from corporations to Subchapter S companies, thus paying taxes at the individual rate. This also increased the reported share of income declared, and tax paid, by the rich.

Never let facts get in the way of a good lie, eh?

Meanwhile, in the CT Democrat Senate primary, one of the candidates has been running a TV commercial that contains information about her opponent that she herself acknowledges is false, yet she continues to run the ad anyway and the stations that are airing it say they can't do anything about it.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

Fresh, that's just bad logic.

The tax share of the rich increases after a cut in the top marginal rate only because the income share of the rich increases. It's not an indicator of a growing economy, it's an indicator of growing inequality. :(

Fishy is more than willing to make himself look like an idiot to advance Mittens cause. For his sake I just hope he's getting paid for his trouble.

For most of you, it will be an upset of Mega proportions if the GOP wins the White House in November.

Will it be an Obama loss or a Romney win??

It's only about 2:1 Obama right now and everybody knows we are way too far out to have any certainty.

What makes you think most people here think Obama is a lock? Are you setting up a talking point ("boy won't you know-it-alls be surprised" etc etc), or do you mean something?

Who are you referring to?

Romney's a lock. Look at the economy.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

Romney's playing the role of the tortoise. If nothing changes, he won't win. There are still quite a few possible events (admittedly, most will have negative impact on the US and our economy) where he can pull ahead and win.
