Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

Re: Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

Harry Reid needs to unclinch.

"The senator has refused to identify the investor and has acknowledged that he can’t be certain about the veracity of the charges he’s been spreading."

“I don't think the burden should be on me,” Reid told home-state reporters. “The burden should be on him. He’s the one I’ve alleged has not paid any taxes. Why didn’t he release his tax returns?”

Give it a rest, Harry - people already know that Mitt hasn't released his tax returns, and they've already drawn whatever conclusions they're going to draw from it based on their predetermined points of view. Continuing to pound the point just makes you look desperate.

With that as a baseline metric, about 98% of hipsters would fall by the wayside as well. This idea may have much merit...
Unfortunately, the hipsters would have gotten deferments. Nobody loathes money that much without having rich parents to rebel against.

I'm not too fond of this logic. The burden "should be on him" simply because he's the one accused of a crime? I could just as easily accuse Reid or Pelosi of a crime and put "the burden on them" to prove their innocence. Of course, it's different if you're a liberal.

Continuing to pound the point is fine -- most people can't really wrap their heads around Romney not paying taxes for ten years, and reminding them of this is good politics.

The old "anonymous source" is dirty pool, though. I'd expect that out of somebody a lot more bush league.

No, it's not. This is not only bad logic by Reid but also blatant intimidation. In other words, the kind of crap the Echo Chamber gets away with every day on the right. (Of course, it's different if you're a conservative.)

But this is a lot worse because it's not only an elected official but a chamber leader. I have no doubt whatsoever that Romney is hiding that he didn't pay any taxes for ten years, and that Reid did talk to a guy who said this, but for an official to state it publicly he needs an audit trail -- a name so we can verify the statement and the source's legitimacy. Otherwise, he can't use the statement. That's basic ethics, and Reid failing is a lot worse than Fox failing.

I think Leno had it right. Mitt ought to release ten years of income taxes and His Transcriptlessness should release ten year's worth of birth certificates.

Re: Elections 2012 -- Carrion My Wayward Son!

Yup. Everybody's got First Amendment rights, even the CEO of a "gasp" Christian oriented business, which has broken no laws nor advocated breaking of laws. Unlike those idiot mayors. No public official, especially including a pipsqueak alderman in Chicago, has the authority to deny a legal, successful business the oportunity to open in his ward. Period. And if he's successful in Chicago, that doesn't mean his pandering is legal, it just means it's Chicago.

As to whether Menino in Boston (who seems to be a real idiot) and Rahm "should" have spoken up that is a matter of opinion. While Rahm was espousing what he called "Chicago values," another dozen or so young black people were gunned down in the streets and he also found time to suck up to Louis Farrakhan. Evidently anti-Semitism and ordering the killing of Malcolm X and selling worthless AIDS "cures" to members of your own group ARE reflective of "Chicago values."

Cardinal George speaks out. And the pipsqueak alderman looks even smaller, if that's possible.

It is getting pretty bad in Chicago isn't it:

Reid failing is a lot worse than Fox failing.

You're screwing up my equilibrium with this even handedness. I feel like I should jump to Harry's defense, or something. Maybe he wasn't accusing Mitt of actual tax evasion, just saying he legally avoided paying taxes. Then it's not so bad, politics as usual but not outright slander. Let's give ol' Harry a break people!

As cetainly as the sun rises on the left: Tu Quoque. BTW if nobody passed the alleged information along to Reid, how did he get it? Rummaging around in IRS files? Wouldn't that be a crime?

LOL. Very nice. :)

Next I'll be defending Chick Fil A. In fact, I will defend them -- the attempts to ban them by local governments are a very bad idea. As long as the company doesn't discriminate (and as far as I know it does not), then there is no basis for treating them any differently legally than their competitors. A private citizen can boycott them, absolutely, but not a municipality.

Reid's never impressed me much. Surely there's somebody over there who would do a better job of leading the Senate for the Democrats?

Somebody?

Anybody.

Reid is an inoffensive choice to hold factions together. He has zero leadership skills, zero chutzpah, and zero vision. He is the Ghost of Democrats Past, haunting us with what the whole party was like in the 1980's. He's been a complete disaster in that chair, but the tangram pieces just don't fit together for anybody else.

The obvious SML would have been, and I hate myself for saying it as much as I loathe her, Hillary.

I know she's probably an AntiChrist to the left, but Ann Coulter brings up some tactics from El Presidente's past campaigns: http://townhall.com/columnists/anncoulter/2012/08/01/obamas_signature_move_unsealing_private_records

So, if you're wondering where the innuendo came from, there is a possible clue.

This is getting out of hand. What do you have against the smartest woman in the world?

With the exception of Pelosi (who was as hated by the right as their leaders are routinely hated by the left, meaning you did your job right), the Dems have this annoying habit of picking leaders from purple-red states who have to watch what they say just to hold onto 50.1% of the vote every 2-6 years. On the Republican Senate side: Dole (Kansas), Trent Lott (MS), Bill Frist (TN), Mitch McConnell (KY). Those guys are subject to the "Live Boy/Dead Girl" rule of incumbency.

Amen about Reid. He's a total disaster. With him and Daschle as back to back leaders its a wonder there are any Democrats left in the Senate, let alone them having a majority. My preference would be Schumer for SML. Maybe Reid can pull a Byrd and drop the leadership position to take over Appropriations or something.

Having said that, the tax issue implication is straight out of the Karl Rove playbook. It forces Romney to do something he doesn't want to do, which is release his taxes, no doubt because he's paid very little to none of the years. Where I think Reid is his usual tone deaf self is in not being more specific as to where he's getting the info from. "Somebody at Bain" is a big vague and dirty. Could be the the janitor for all we know.

Good point; hadn't thought about that.

Hillary (NY) or a 2008-losing Obama (IL) would have been ideal. Too bad our CA senators are so bad -- Feinstein's corrupt and Boxer's a moron.

I was shocked at how well Pelosi has done in her job. I thought she'd be awful; she turned out to be the most effective Dem leader in Congress since Tip.

(I also thought Hillary would be either mediocre or distracting as SOS, but she turned out very well too. She's still Satan, though. I hope she and Bill ride off into the night after Charlotte. I'm sure Bill will be hot on the trail of Charlotte...)

According to my wife, who hasn't been wrong about these things yet (though she's been off the Hill for two years now and her info is getting stale), Schumer is hated by his colleagues and they wouldn't pee on him if he was on fire. Now, hated guys have gotten leadership slots before, but that's usually the GOP going through the pecking order and giving it "the next guy in line." The Dems are much more cliquish and everything always has to be three dimensional chess with them.

She had a bullet proof majority in her house, plus a 60 seat Senate and a like thinking occupant of 1600 PA Ave. Of course she'd succeed. Only an idiot could have screwed it up.
