Division 1 Commitments 2014-15

Re: Division 1 Commitments 2014-15

Princeton

Alev Baysoy..................F.....................( St. Paul United ).....................St. Paul, MN

Interesting to see the markedly earlier commitments for Princeton in this year than in years past (there is a 3rd one on the East Coast Wizards website for this year). Either Kampersal has established a new/better arrangement with the admissions department to address their decreasing competitiveness or he is making promises that he hasn't been willing to in the past...and we'll see how the admissions committee responds to that if it is the case. Perhaps he is now following the Harvard model - make X commitments knowing full well that admissions will cut a couple for you... Hopefully the latter isn't the case given the inherent lack of respect/regard for the recruits it implies. Seems like Princeton should be better than that (but then again Harvard isn't).

Re: Division 1 Commitments 2014-15

HockeyEast33 Ms. Baysoy is a great player who will fit in well at Princeton. How nice of you to assume that something wrong is happening with her commitment. Perhaps your kid(s) couldn't get in to an Ivy so you assume if someone else commits there is something shady going on.

My post has no negative comments whatsoever about this player (Baysoy) or her personal commitment to Princeton, who and which I know nothing about. My comments are about an apparent change in recruiting philosophy at Princeton. Prior to the 14-15 year, you rarely saw any Princeton commitments on this board (or heard around the rink) this early in the process regardless of the quality of the player - they simply didn't make them. They have become dramatically less competitive the last 3-5 years, in some part due to their later recruiting timing as the commitment process moved earlier at other schools. Coach Kampersal appears to be attempting to address that this year by making earlier commitments than in the past. Either he has made arrangements with the admissions committee to do earlier academic screenings (which would be a little surprising given Princeton's historical position on this across all sports) or he is taking the approach Harvard has used for a while now to combat the earlier commitment timing - make extra commitments and then let the admissions committee reject a couple of the committed players. Look at various threads on this board for evidence/confirmation of Harvard's approach - this year it was 2 Canadian players who were on the Harvard commitment list for a year and then were rejected in admissions, in a previous year a national team player who ended up at Northeastern after a post-grad year was dragged along for a year by Harvard with a "commitment" and then rejected.

I attended an Ivy League school (not Princeton) and think that in general the Ivy League approach to athletic recruiting is dishonest and disingenuous to the players (across all/most sports). The Ivies rely on their reputation and attractiveness to excuse their callous handling of atheles in the recruiting process. Coaches claim to make commitments knowing full well that their admissions committees have not reviewed the academic qualifications of the players and that the commitment is of effectively no meaningful value (other than that they want the player on the team). Given that the absolute minimum academic index for an athlete in the Ivy League excludes 70-80% of all students in the world (yes - it's true - look it up), the Ivies should change their policies to allow academic reviews and disclosure consistent with the recruiting timing of their coaches. I'll get off the soapbox now.

With respect to your daughter Ms. Baysoy, I wish her all the success at Princeton both hockey and academic. I would suggest that you learn to differentiate comments about your kid's team from those about your kid specifically and develop thicker skin before she gets to Princeton because what sometimes gets written on forums and boards about losing D1 teams and players on those teams (which Princeton has been lately) can be pretty brutal.

Re: Division 1 Commitments 2014-15

Is there some deception occurring where potential recruits or those making early commitments are unaware of, or purposely left uninformed regarding a requirement for gaining admission in order to fulfill their commitment and realize their dream, or desire to join the programs mentioned? Any others? Is that the theory?

Any others? Is that the theory?

Historically, at the Ivies at this point in the process (Junior year Winter or earlier), the kids are asked for their academics (test scores and grades) and their chance of admission is assessed by the coaching staff, who are likely to be biased towards giving the thumbs up for someone they want. The admissions departments don't get involved until Summer at the earliest and the Likely Letters go out in the Fall (the real admission assessment). The coaches are making admissions assessments and commitments based on experience in absence of formal admissions review.

IMHO, that is deceptive. While coaches at any school will usually tell recruits that admission is dependent on continued academic performance, the assumption is that if a coach tells you you can get in that you can if you continue to perform at the same level. At schools like BU, BC, UM, etc. the admissions team will review academics earlier than the Ivies and make actual admissions commitments (again based on continued performance). But at the Ivies, the coaches commit without any review from admissions. Sometimes, even well-intentioned coaches get it wrong at an Ivy because the admissions committee changes their emphasis or requirements from previous years. Clearly, at Harvard (at least as reported by others on this forum), that is leading to 1 or 2 "failed admission" commitments per year.

Be very interested to hear from any others with recent experiences with Princeton, Harvard, or other Ivies that suggest the admissions committee is reviewing players academics prior to the summer (I think, but can't definitively state, that there may even be a league rule against this).

With Nationals over, should start to see a bunch of commitments. From Assabet Valley website:

Harvard

Alexandria Laing .............. F .................... Nobles/Assabet ................ Marblehead, MA
Haley Mullins .................. F .................... Nobles/Assabet ................

Rensselaer

Shayna Tomlinson ............ F .................... Assabet/St Pauls .............. Wolfeboro, NH

Between this year's grads and next years grads, if you don't go to Nobles and/or play for Assabet (5 in 2013 graduating class, 2 so far in 2014 graduating class), you better have other options if Harvard makes a commitment to you ;)

So what are you saying? If Harvard makes a commitment to a player that she shouldn't expect Katie to honor it unless she plays for Assabet or Nobles?

A tongue in cheek reference to Harvard's hidden Red Line connection through Dedham. ;)

Well, here is Hux's 2013-2014 Harvard commit list.....with the two that won't be going to Harvard italicized based on other comments on the forum. That leaves 1 non Nobles/Assabet and she (Zarzecki) is a package deal with her sister based on the other thread where she is listed as a Harvard recruit. It would certainly seem that there is a preference/priority... and if you look at the rest of the roster you see a pronounced Assabet/Nobles connection ..... why wouldn't Harvard maintain that at the expense of others...?

The implication is that Katie is only honest with or will only keep her commitment to you if play at Assabet or Nobles....Maybe tongue in cheek but I thought it was a curious post.

Re: Division 1 Commitments 2014-15

From Assabet Valley website:

Yale

Katelyn Gately ............. F .................. Milton/Assabet ........................... MA

Great kid - kudos to her!

Assabet is obviously a very successful program with many great players (and fairly good coaching UCONN FAN :)), but you just have to laugh a little when you look at their college commitment page. They frequently can't even get their own players names and graduation years correct! It is sadly indicative of how little they value the individuals in their program. Examples (some have already been cleaned up):

Maura Gately is actually Katelyn Gately....

Katherine Pate is a 2014 graduate, not 2013.... hope they remembered to invite her to tryouts!! :)
