Division 1 Commitments 2014-15

Re: Division 1 Commitments 2014-15

Well, I saw her when she was just pretty good and also, unfortunately, stand-out exceptional. So, I think Flint's assessment is pretty accurate.

I usually agree with you BUT on this… well, not so much. Flint is a joke!!! When Coyne is gone, the truth will be told. BTW, NU was her 2nd or 3rd choice. For the 2014-2015 season, I wonder how many times he'll ask the team how Coyne is doing? It's all about Coyne, you'll never win big with that attitude.

Re: Division 1 Commitments 2014-15

Are early commits less likely to deliver?

Quite the opposite in general. The question is whether Kampersal used his newfound flexibility well in the early commitment selections he made. They certainly aren't as stellar an early commit group as Harvard for instance. Time will tell if it works for Princeton - likely 2 or 3 years to really know.

Flint's assessment is probably accurate but not exactly overwhelming: "Taylor is a very technically-sound goaltender with a great work ethic. She will push our other two goalies and compete for ice time." Especially considering some of his commentary on other recruits, like:

- "She has a ton of skill and is a great playmaker, but she also has the ability to put the puck in the net. She is one of those players that always ends up on the scoresheet."
- "She is an all-around player that is responsible at both ends of the ice, and her work ethic and skill set are phenomenal. She has also proven that she can consistently put up points while playing at a very high level. I am very excited to watch her grow over the next four years"
- "Lauren is a big, strong defenseman with a goal-scoring touch. She is a fierce competitor who will be counted on in all situations next year"
- etc.

I'm not sure this is entirely fair, based on how strong NU were with a very short bench for the second half of last season.

I'm wondering if you have recently become a ND fan?

Re: Division 1 Commitments 2014-15

I would agree. I have been in contact with Coach Kampersal for several years, especially after he became the U18 coach. (My daughter plays on a European National U18 team so I have talked with him at the U18 Worlds the last two years). He has always been pretty straight in the often confusing world of recruiting. He was always asking for test scores and told my daughter that she was in the mix for the last open spot, but for anyone who has been through the process, that translates to 'I am not guaranteeing anything' so make sure you have other options. If there has been any change with admissions and the hockey program, I believe it has just been to clarify the number of support slots that he has and the minimum requirements, so he can go out earlier with more confidence.

So in the final analysis, Coach Kampersal continues to work respectfully with recruits, even given the markedly earlier commitments. This is a coaching staff with integrity.

And Earlier Quote from HockeyEast33:
"Interesting to see the markedly earlier commitments for Princeton in this year than in years past (there is a 3rd one on the East Coast Wizards website for this year). Either Kampersal has established a new/better arrangement with the admissions department to address their decreasing competitiveness or he is making promises that he hasn't been willing to in the past...and we'll see how the admissions committee responds to that if it is the case. Perhaps he is now following the Harvard model - make X commitments knowing full well that admissions will cut a couple for you... Hopefully the latter isn't the case given the inherent lack of respect/regard for the recruits it implies. Seems like Princeton should be better than that (but then again Harvard isn't).

It appears you are correct (at least for this class) and that a new balance has been struck between the team/athletic dept and the admissions staff that allows Kampersal to make earlier commitments and fulfill them. Congratulations! Now we'll see if the recruits that he has been able to bring in as a result of the change can deliver on the ice.

One might, from your comment, infer that the stellar Harvard group was installed through tactics defined as having," inherent lack of respect/regard for the recruits." When the recruiting process began, the focus of the thread seemed to be on the ethics of the process. Extraordinarily early shelving of recruits was of particular note. You may be right. There may be some diminishing returns early on when the trade-offs begin between ethics, early decisions, and capturing those stellar performers who may be shelved or may be holding out. I know very little about the teams, leagues, standings etc. But it seems to me, since the process and trade-offs can never be perfectly predicted, if the process is respectful all-around, then maybe someone who is more knowledgeable than I should create a stat column for that accomplishment.

I know the academic progress of recruits was followed carefully. "No A, No Play." My interpretation of the kind but clear message.
