Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Runners: any advice for ways to prevent getting blisters on the back of the heel from rubbing shoes? My shoes fit and are comfortable, but apparently not perfectly.

You might try Vaseline or some other petroleum jelly on your heels to ease the friction.

Duct tape. I apply it to the skin of my right heel every time I play hockey. I tore my Achilles' tendon when I was a kid, part of the bone chipped away with the tendon. When it healed, a lump (more or less) formed on the back of my heel. Now I have to cover it with tape or I'll get horrible blisters. I've found that duct tape works best because it's generally smooth on the outside, and it's wide enough that it doesn't tear off due to the motion of my feet while skating.

275 squat... 2 reps. :)

Next week I'm hoping to overhead press 135 pounds for 2... lets see what my coach draws up.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Had an interesting race on Saturday- arrived in Puerto Rico at 4pm, and ran a 10k at 5:30.

So I had some flight to shake off.

And it was 90F.

Ouch.

Hot city.

By the end, it was hard to tell the difference between the sweat and the water being sprayed on us. Didn't quite PR, but considering, 55min wasn't too bad. And got another race in during vacation!!! Got a 5 mile run in Old San Juan on Sunday, too- pretty cool. Well, really hot.

I finally cracked the dreaded Lone Tree 5K and got it under 30:00! Quiz and I both did. I did 29:19 and she did 29:29. It's a course in which you gain over 300' of elevation in the first 2 miles.

Woot!

Ugh. Sick and its way too hot outside for me to really be training right now and I only have 1.5 weeks until the first race. I guess I can get a swim in tomorrow, but if I run i'm going to have to get up really early in the morning or go out after dark this week.

Are you the other one who has this cold that I guess must be going around, even though nobody else I know has it?

ah the joys of training in the summer for triathlon. We're in the same boat out here in Colorado...way too toasty in the afternoon to get anything done. We've got a bike planned late this afternoon.

Yeah, the weather has been sucky lately. hot, humid and windy lately in MN. Our long ride this past Saturday was simply no fun. The wind was blowing 20+ mph at 7AM and 20 minutes in I was dripping with sweet thanks to the humidity.

Heat has been brutal here too. Nearly vomited and passed out after Saturday's jog. (note: I did donate blood on Friday and hadn't eaten yet on Saturday morning when we went out.) Waiting until tonight when it's "cooler" (hopefully).

I did 7 miles today in about 1:04. Should the half-marathon work out, I'm sitting pretty to finish under 2 hours. :)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Looking to get back on track this afternoon after a pretty terrible weekend. Well, terrible from a fitness perspective. Awesome from an eating delicious things and being lazy perspective.

Thursday evening I finished up week 6 of the Couch to 5k program by jogging 2.5 miles in 25 minutes. Hoping to do the same tonight, after some lifting.

Well I got it from the wife, so it is going around my household at least.

Weather like this is why I'm thankful for runs at sunrise by the shore of Lake Michigan.

Great job!

My sling came off today, but I still have one more follow-up with the orthopedic surgeon. Pending that, I'll be cleared to run again.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Been biking to work as much as the wether will allow (btw, it's 72 and sunny here  ), and sticking to my calorie rdi as much as possible (The 4th of July was tough though - went to a luau at a friends place and pigged out on pork :D ). Even with the 4th, I'm down another 10 lbs - making 60 lbs total lost!

The best news of this? For our vacation to Yellowstone we had been talking about doing a one-day "ride & raft" trip. The problem was that they have a weight limit for the horseback riding portion, and I was over, so we weren't going to do it. Now, a month and a half before the trip, I'm under, and we made the reservations! My daughter is so excited she can't stop talking about it...
