Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I know most of you probably laugh at the ESPY's, but there is one category that I want you to look at. Best Male Athlete with a Disability.

Rudy Garcia Tolson became the first double-amputee to finish an Ironman, completing Ironman Arizona 5 weeks after he missed the bike cutoff in Kona. To understand and appreciate this, the kid has very little glute muscles to help him on the bike. Imagine that.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Been biking to work as much as the wether will allow (btw, it's 72 and sunny here  ), and sticking to my calorie rdi as much as possible (The 4th of July was tough though - went to a luau at a friends place and pigged out on pork :D ). Even with the 4th, I'm down another 10 lbs - making 60 lbs total lost!

The best news of this? For our vacation to Yellowstone we had been talking about doing a one-day "ride & raft" trip. The problem was that they have a weight limit for the horseback riding portion, and I was over, so we weren't going to do it. Now, a month and a half before the trip, I'm under, and we made the reservations! My daughter is so excited she can't stop talking about it...

Congrats on the weight loss - 60 pounds lost is a great achievment. Keep at it - you're setting a great example for your daughter and others!

Now that you've got the biking down, throw in some swimming and running and we'll have you doing triathlons in no time :)

I remember seeing him on the broadcast of Kona on NBC - you felt just terrible for the kid missing the bike cutoff. Biking 112 miles is tough enough, to do it with no legs/quads and only being able to use your glutes is amazing. It's great to hear he finished IM Arizona.

That is completely cool. What a great accomplishment for you.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Ran the Harvard Pilgrim Independence Day 10K at Patriot Place on the 4th... the finish was at the 50 yard line of Gillette, which was pretty cool. Got a new PR of nearly a minute, finishing in 49:16. Next up is an interesting one... the Big Man Run in Worcester. Basically it's 4+ miles, but with 3 stops along the way... eating a hot dog and drinking a beer at each stop.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Ugh. Sick and its way too hot outside for me to really be training right now and I only have 1.5 weeks until the first race. I guess I can get a swim in tomorrow, but if I run i'm going to have to get up really early in the morning or go out after dark this week.
Yeah I walked into the gym and was just working on kicking up to a handstand and I was dripping in sweat. I have no idea how I pulled of my lifting set yesterday.
(Power Clean 3-3-3-3-3, I started at 95-105-115-125 and failed at 135)

Yeah, the weather has been sucky lately. hot, humid and windy lately in MN. Our long ride this past Saturday was simply no fun. The wind was blowing 20+ mph at 7AM and 20 minutes in I was dripping with sweet thanks to the humidity.
I had planned to do a ride this weekend, but after being out in the humidty all day sat and sunday, I just hid in the A/C I couldnt take it anymore.

Heat has been brutal here too. Nearly vomited and passed out after Saturday's jog. (note: I did donate blood on Friday and hadn't eaten yet on Saturday morning when we went out.) Waiting until tonight when it's "cooler" (hopefully).
If you can go out in the morning it might be better (probably harder M-F). I just find that the evening wont cool down as much as you think as compared to the morning (after it has had all night to cool off).

I did 7 miles today in about 1:04. Should the half-marathon work out, I'm sitting pretty to finish under 2 hours. :)
Nice!!!

Looking to get back on track this afternoon after a pretty terrible weekend. Well, terrible from a fitness perspective. Awesome from an eating delicious things and being lazy perspective.

Thursday evening I finished up week 6 of the Couch to 5k program by jogging 2.5 miles in 25 minutes. Hoping to do the same tonight, after some lifting.
Also NICE!!!!

Hoooray!!!!

You are going to love yellowstone. My tip for you (unrelated to scenery), drink lots of water, more water than you think you should drink. I find when I go to the higher altitudes I want to drink less, but in reality you need to drink more. Personally it takes me 4 days to adjust (sad that I have done it enough that I know), but really the key to enjoying the vacation may come down to enough water. Don't worry there are pit toliets all over the place if you fear drinking too much (which is not likely).

That and I think I may have mentioned this in my super long write up about the park, but consider the middle of the day the time for indoor type activties, or low level activities (maybe geyser gazing). Except the geyser basins can get really hot. Some of the canyon hikes (into the canyon) might be good for midday, but it is going to be pretty warm at the rim (with exporsure and all the glorious black tar).

ok enough of yellowstone, before I go on and on and on.

Drink water!!!

That is bad ***!
I was quite excited that they showed some of the paraolympics this year. I love the olympics, but too see the paraolympians kill it at their given sports really gives me inspiration.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Moose-great job on the loss!!! Besides being able to take the excusion it will make the hikes more enjoyable.

About the heat- I think I'll have to let the dream of retiring in the carribbean go away. Ran again this morning and felt miserable after 3 miles of 5 I finished.... We'll go earlier tomorrow- like 6 am. But with the heat and more the humidity- this is rough.

Have to get three more runs in on this vacation, somehow.

the triathletes that live in Tucson get up at 4 am for training, and are done by 6. They'll start up again around 8 at night. Maybe this can work?

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

(Power Clean 3-3-3-3-3, I started at 95-105-115-125 and failed at 135)

If you failed at 135 why not give 130 a go? Jumps by 10s are all nice and symmetric looking but the main failure of machines and dumbbells is the inability to increment by small enough of a value (those arm curls ain't jumping by 2.5 or 5, folks). All gyms should be able to increment barbells by 5 pounds... smaller jumps depends on what the gym has on hand or if you convince yourself that $50 on 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 5/4 barbell weights are worthwhile (as I'm trying to convince myself :p)

More to the point though is on the jumps by 10... the goal of weight training is to stimulate the necessary parts to progress usually by going heavier than before... but in some manner this has to be successful. The good thing about being able to increment is to be able to push into what is/can be successful and provide a means for your body to adapt to this new stress.

Mostly I'm just saying this because its nice to have somebody else around here using weights besides myself and unh_hockey :)

I do weights, but I can't come anywhere close to those numbers. My max clean so far has been 60 lbs (at the moment my 1RMs are Bench: 95, Shoulder Press: 63, Push Press: 83, Deadlift: 143)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

So a little update my constantly falling off the path...

After reading a bunch about yoga and doing some of the poses incorrectly (I think), I decided to sign up for a class. I just had my first class tonight and I enjoyed it. There are only 3 of us plus the instructor, so I feel very comfortable being there. I think this is the most refresh that I have felt after an exercise than I have ever at the gym. Thank you all for the encouragement!

moose - congrats!

honestly, I only hit 125 on the power clean yesterday... granted I did 5 sets of 5 rep squats for 235 and 130 push press 8 sets of 3 reps. My legs don't like me today (my coach had me also do a front squat after each power clean set... freaking sadist  ;) )

All things come in time (I hope).

I don't even weigh 125, so I'm not expecting to be able to hit numbers like that (or at least not soon!). My goal is to get bodyweight on everything (well, except deadlift, which I've already exceeded by a lot). The cleans and the shoulder press are the hardest for me. I definitely need to work on my shoulder strength.

heh... I'm a guy (5'8") so... yeah :) Keep everything in its context. I think I'm just getting at that I think I could do more than 125 if I hadn't destroyed myself first.

Shoulder press is always the hardest... its been said to me that its emphasizing fewer (smaller?) muscles so you get fatigued faster. I've been reading up on it in general. As much as I've progressed I am on the track of your middle-of-the-road male... which is disappointing. Because my shoulders are generally weaker than the bench I want to get good with the press. Bodyweight press in general is a challenge... but I think its one to be tackled.

I've set out general goals at this point... I'd like to reach a 200 press (above ideal body weight), I'd like to reach a 400 squat. Don't know how long it'll take. Once I've hit that and maybe one other undefined goal I'll switch to emphasize muscle size and wrestling gators.

Cleans/Power Cleans are more difficult because they are very much technique specific. Gotta jump at the right moment, have to whip the elbows under and all that other stuff.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

If you failed at 135 why not give 130 a go?
After I failed 3 times at 135, I did bring it down to 130 but I couldnt do it. Last time the 125 was a one rep max and the coaches really had to talk me thru it, this time I was able to do the 125 fairly comfortably (for being at my max weight) but I just got I think mentally blocked at the 130/135. Next time, since I know that is the road block, I may even go up by 2.5 or 5's even.

I do have to say, I am enjoying the Oly lifting way more than I thought I would have.

Compared to our body weights, your percentage is higher. It is all relative.

I don't even weigh 125, so I'm not expecting to be able to hit numbers like that (or at least not soon!). I probably should set some goals at some point. I am still cleaning out my diet, and I am sure there will be some performance dips as my body adjusts, but maybe at the end of the month I should set myself some goals.

My form is of course still being worked on as well, but it is amazing how easy that weight moves when you pull it right.

It works a whole lot better if the alarm is set at AM rather than PM...

Did the run this morning an hour earlier- much better. Will probably get up at 6am tomorrow and Saturday for our last two runs here in Puerto Rico.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

It's weird, but I feel like I'm adding numbers to my weight routine that I simply shouldn't at my age.

I started lifting again after the neurologist said I could so long as I didn't do something stupid to injure my neck. I'm excited to get to the point where I'm comfortable enough to start squats.

With that said, my numbers are thus right now (staying light on bench press and military press because I don't have a spotter in my home):
bench press (barbell) 3x12x205lbs
military press (dumbbells) 3x10x55lbs ...I don't own 60 pounders yet, steel's $0.90/lb now.....I hate tariffs.
lat pull downs 3x10x140
flies (wide) 3x10x30
triceps extensions 3x10x70
hammer curls (dumbbells) 3x12x40 ...would go more, but I don't have 45 pounders either....stores have trouble keeping that size in stock.
Shoulder raises, lateral & forward, super-sets 3x12x15
bench rows 3x10x40
various things on the neck routine
back hyper-extensions - using a declined bench

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Ran for the first time in over a month and a half this morning, and it was liberating. Started with a 15 minute walk, then ran for 30 min, then walked for another 10.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

first tri of the season tomorrow.

Went for a tuneup swim last night and it didn't go well. Kinda wondering if I should have skipped it...

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

My fiance has gone into Weight Watchers (her work pays for it) and she's lost 20 lbs. She's gotten onto new meds for her thyroid. It looks like she's on her way. I've lost the weight I gained during the holidays and I'm back at 6'3" 259. I hate how it says I should be 177. I'd look like Paris Hilton at that weight. What should be right for me? I got a larger frame to work with so I would like a reference point. Thanks.
