Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Did a 3-miler yesterday. I thought it was a 5k and was really excited that my time was almost a minute faster than my other races this year, but then I found out it was only 3 miles and was sad. Have about 3 weeks left until the NYC triathlon, then 2 weeks later the Ithaca triathlon, and then the day after that I'm going on a 7 day bicycle tour. Should be a fun and tiring month.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Thanks; with that in mind, I'll keep riding the stationary bike and start using leg weights. Also, with the Detroit marathon in the distance, I'll extend the length of my walks so I'm on pace with the training schedule.

I think the longer walks will defaintly help to make sure you get the mileage in. You had a good base before the injury and it wont take much time to get that back, but the time on your feet (which maybe the bigges killer in a marathon) can only really be built up by time on your feet. So that might not be a bad plan.

My kid (12) starts crossfit today. Be interesting to see how he likes this.

They are starting up a crossfit kids at my affiliate soon - I'm wondering how you scale something like crossfit for kids (especially the really little ones). Clearly they can't do the weightlifting. Maybe a 12 year old can, but not a 6 or 7 year old!

http://www.crossfitkids.com/

I am sure it is scaled someone by age, but a 6 year old could certainly do the movements with a pole, if not some light weights. I am sure they make it more game like, like I am thinking of some of the fun "drills" you do with kids and hockey.

To be honest alot of it looks like stuff we used to do in gym class in elementary school. Which I bet they dont do in schools anymore.

got about two weeks until my first tri of the season. I'm feeling pretty good; my open water swims have been going pretty well. My cycling continues to improve, and overall my running is fine.

Should be good to go. :)

I am so excited for your tri season.

I cant wait till next year, when I can try a tri again!

Your schedule just makes me tired. :-P

Pressing 130 (2 reps)... good... worry about my left rotator cuff... bad. Time to put away the pressing movements for a week before I hurt myself... no sense in doing that.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Forgot to post yesterday that we ran the Northville Solstace 10m race yesterday- and was happy with the results- 1:29:22- which was a sub 9:00 pace. Gives me a lot of confidence that I can do a sub 9:10 pace for a marathon in October.

One step at a time.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Don't you mean: when you can tri again? :p
ba dum ching!

hey Winger, if you're interested in doing a few of them in Denver, look at this for next year. All the way up to the half-Iron distance.

Let me know when you guys sign up and I can see if I can swing one out there. I prob would just rent a bike out there, althought my bike is nice, it prob isnt worth dealing with checking in on the plane. Maybe when I get to a tri bike, but next year I figure I will do one or two. I have had no shoulder pain since starting crossfit, so I figure once the fall rolls around I will hop in the pool again.

I think wisco has a pretty strong tri community as well. I drove by an outdoor velodrome yeterday!

ok cool. We even could lend you a hybrid bike that we have. We're going to sign up as soon as registration is open since it fills up fast.

And yeah, Madison has a great triathlon community. Boulder, Tucson, and Madison are basically the biggest in the country.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Working through week 6 of the Couch to 5K program, and I think I'm starting to "get" the whole running thing. Six months ago you couldn't have paid me to run, now I actually look forward to it. Definitely didn't expect to feel that way when I started this - I've never enjoyed running.

Still working through the 100 push-up challenge, too. I've been stuck on week 4 for the past 3 weeks - day 3, column 3 is a killer!

I've lost 35 pounds in the last 4 months, feel great, and can't imagine going back to my old ways.

I'm interested in running an actual 5k in a month or two. Anybody know of a website/resource where I can find out about races?

Google 5K's in your area. You're bound to find some info that way. Or go check at a local running store. Even Dick's Sporting Goods should have some info for you. You're going to have some great time. :)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

A lot of races use active.com for registration, and I believe they have a way for you to search for races in your area.

And the plan is working; definitely getting mileage in every morning and should be back in double digits by the end of this month. Also, using the elliptical machine helps simulate the running motion without actually running, so I'm getting a workout that way as well.

I am going thru the 200 situp challenge myself.
Nice work on the weight loss.
Coolrunning.com and active.com are good sites.

Excellent!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I just did my first ever 8 mile run! :) I'd be lying if I said it wasn't hard or if I didn't hurt a bit right now, but it's a good pain.
To reward myself, I'm getting Thai food tonight from this amazing place in Marquette. (@Shirtless Bob--The Rice Paddy)

Huge relief! I'm glad you stayed out of that race- you'll get the miles back quickly.

Great job! Do you have a run tomorrow, or is it a break?

here's some motivation- if you run 5 miles tomorrow- you just finished a half marathon!

I'm tempted to suggest to slow down, but was it hard because of the distance, or were you running too fast?

Different motivation- last summer, when I did my first 8, 10, 12, 14 mile runs- I was sore and tired and etc etc etc. Now, a measly year later- I'm ok. Not sure how that will work out when I do 16 in 4 weeks or 18 two weeks after that, or 20 two weeks after that. But it's pretty amazing to run, and still be useful the rest of the day! Something to look forward to. That, and running through 6ft snow drifts in February....

1. Something short and easy to get out and moving (and pre-relieve some stress--I'm working campground check in for the 4th of July weekend, and I have a feeling it's going to get hairy).
2. It was the distance, and probably has something to do with the fact I haven't run very much in the last week and a half. And, it's not really bad pain, it's "I worked hard" good type of pain.
3. I'm feeling that now with the shorter runs. This time last year, I was only doing 2 and 3 mile runs, and those took quite the effort. Now, they're my short and easy runs. It's still a great motivator.

Congrats on your first 8-miler! And the Rice Paddy? I'm jealous!

I'm glad I stayed out too. I've had a renewed energy the past couple weeks, not only from the rest, but from the fact that I'm finally getting my diet figured out! Granted, I'm still shying away from cookies and cake, but I've been cooking a lot more and discovering that all the fat-free junk in the world can't stand up against a small piece of good cheese.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Runners: any advice for ways to prevent getting blisters on the back of the heel from rubbing shoes? My shoes fit and are comfortable, but apparently not perfectly.
