Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Training for IMoo is progressing but I'm beginning to understand why they say the biggest challenge in training for an ironman is getting to the starting line healthy.

No major issues, just some hip, back, and IT band pains that caused me some grief. I stumbled upon this book: http://www.amazon.com/Pain-Free-Rev...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1275671776&sr=8-1 and it's been a huge help. I can't recommend it enough.

Next weekend is the first race of the season - a half iron. I'm not tapering for it so it might be kind of rough....

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I have dumped pretty much refined anything...sugar, grains. But I also have alot of weight to lose. So I pretty much eat protien, fruits and vegs (for nutrients and carbs) and good healthy fat (which includes butter).

I actually recently started down the same path by getting rid of diet Mountain Dew and Diet Coke from my daily "diet". Not because I was afraid of some the internet rumors about the effects of aspartame, etc., but it dawned on me that I probably shouldn't be consuming answers to an inorganic chemistry exam. Also moving to making my own bread and pasta with unrefined flour, etc. However, I refuse to give up beer, or coffee. ;) More fruits and veggies as snack food too.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I think I'm approaching a critical time of year for my weight-loss/health. I'm still right around 50 lbs. lost, but summer is a tough time for me. I think I have a mild form of Seasonal Affected Disorder, with my depression/feeling bummed period being the summer. Reason is that I broadcast sports almost non-stop from September through May, and I really love it. Once it stops (and the baseball team I cover ended their season on Memorial Day), I can get into quite the funk. And the big issue is that in the past, I eat when I'm bored or upset about things.

The good news is that I've got a couple big things to look forward to between now and football starting up in Sept. First, I like to travel to MLB ballparks (I've been to 25 so far), and I've got tickets for Target Field in mid-July, and second, the family is taking a trip to Yellowstone and Mt. Rushmore in mid-August. I'm optimistic that can keep my mind driving forward...

What are people's opinions about yoga? I like going to the gym, but I always come up with some lame excuse on not going like taking another way home so I don't have to drive by the gym. I also have self-consious issues that prevent me from going to the gym. I don't feel comfortable while I am there. I want to try something new, and I am considering signing up for beginner yoga classes. I want to know what all of you think.

Pushed it to 22.5 miles on a hotter day. Glad I have a second bottle cage because I drank both bottles completely dry.

I do yoga 1-2 times a week, in the privacy of my own home. Go to Target and buy a beginners yoga DVD. Grab yourself a yoga mat and throw it into your DVD player. Turn down the lights, light some candles, and do it. They walk you through every pose and it feels oh so good. I have written in my workout log every time that I do yoga that I need to do it more, just because of what it does for my mentality.

Trust me, you'll love it.

Half Marathon #2 is in the book.

The short story- 1:57:22!!! For those keeping score, that's over a full 10 min off my time in Detroit last fall! Pace was 8:53, which is pretty amazing, I must say!

Pretty exhausted, and very tired- half of the tiredness was being woken up twice last night for tornado warnings...

Now just have to double the distance, and keep the speed- by mid October.

I agree with Sloe Gin's response, get a yoga beginner DVD. If you already have self-concious issues at the gym, I think yoga may just make it worse (that's how I feel at least...I don't need people seeing me do yoga and don't want to see other people doing yoga).

Finding a gym buddy has been the best thing ever for me. It helps me avoid excuses to not go to the gym and I don't worry about what anyone may think because I have at least one supportive person there with me.

Congrats, alfa! Will you be running Detroit in October?

Planning on it- already registered for the summer session with Running Fit 501/Two Dogs. Just have to register for the race now.

Mrs Alfa is still "deciding" on whether or not to run New York, though- she got in via the lottery. I think she'll defer to next year, and see if I get in, too.

Have until the end of this month to get the lower rate for Detroit. And I know they are "cancel friendly"- so if I can't find the time to properly train for the full- I can back out to the half.

But it IS my home Marathon, so I should just do it. And I think it's the best chance for Mrs alfa to break 4:00 and qualify for Boston.

are you shooting for Boston this year as well?

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

are you shooting for Boston this year as well?

LOL!!!!

Yea, not so much.:o

To do that, I'd have to shave another min off my mile speed AND double the distance. My current qualifying time is 3:20, but I'm kind of waiting until I'll be 45 for Boston to get another 10 min.... :D

You know- since an 8:00 mile is so much easier than a 7:38

I'll practice yelling really loud, and preparing to hug her at the end.

Edit- Garmin- love it. It's a 305, and while it's a little bulky on the wrist, it shows really good data. I kept a strong eye on a few things yesterday- 1) heart rate (to make sure I'm not over doing it) 2) average pace (make sure I hit my goal), and 3) distance (make sure I'm not running too far). I think it would work great for you, sloe- as you can keep track of biking separately from running. Not so great for swimming, since you don't get heart rate... ;) But the newer ones are supposed to have really long battery life, good for you tri-doers.

Great information! Thanks for the advice! I went to Target on my way back into town and bought a beginner yoga set. Let's see how it goes.

a trip to Yellowstone
Sorry all I saw in the this post was "a trip to yellowstone". So therfore it is awesome!!!!!

Yeah I am doing pretty good. I need to be better about packing a lunch and packing it well, that is teh part of the day I break down. I eat well at home, and I am already at the point where I have no desired for anything fried (the thought of actually makes me want to vomit, weird....). And I a have a pepsi maybe every other or every third day. So it should be gone soon!

I think that is awesome you guys do that together. Looking back at some of my most recent relationships, I was always the more active one. I think relationships going forward (good god I hope there are not many more :( ) That probably should be a deal breaker for me.

Why didnt I think of it before, maybe cause I am so used to doing things on my own, I didnt think how nice it would be have someone to do them with me.

Thanks- but together is relative- on the long runs, she's a lot faster than me- by about 30 seconds a mile. But many of our short runs we do together. And it's good to have encouragement at home.

It does help that we can relate to each other's running issues.

The soda is actually the easiest for me to give up. I'm having a hard time giving up starches. I really, really like potatoes.

But I've decided this week I'm definitely going paleo, and at least seeing how I feel on it. Because yesterday I ate the chinese food provided at the staff meeting at work, and I DEFINITELY felt in in my workout later. I just didn't have the energy or even the drive that I should have.
