Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Thanks- but together is relative- on the long runs, she's a lot faster than me- by about 30 seconds a mile. But many of our short runs we do together. And it's good to have encouragement at home.

It does help that we can relate to each other's running issues.
Yeah but you get to show up to events and leave together. I am not a the type of person that would want to run arm and arm all the way through the race, yikes give me some space. But being able to share the same event, all be it, in your own way, that is something I would welcome with open arms at this point in my life. I wouldnt expect someone to be interested in all the things I am, but the fact that you can share that experience and also enjoy some of it on your own, is something I would love to have.

The soda is actually the easiest for me to give up. I'm having a hard time giving up starches. I really, really like potatoes.

But I've decided this week I'm definitely going paleo, and at least seeing how I feel on it. Because yesterday I ate the chinese food provided at the staff meeting at work, and I DEFINITELY felt in in my workout later. I just didn't have the energy or even the drive that I should have.
Soda is my downfall. If I can ditch that the rest of Paleo is gravy. I cant wait for the detoxing to be over.

Great information! Thanks for the advice! I went to Target on my way back into town and bought a beginner yoga set. Let's see how it goes.

you're gonna love it. :)

It's funny how 90 minutes of yoga can make you feel.

I have to agree. I make time a at least once a week to work a "Yoga for Dummies" DVD :o, and feel great when I'm done. :)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I actually recently started down the same path by getting rid of diet Mountain Dew and Diet Coke from my daily "diet". Not because I was afraid of some the internet rumors about the effects of aspartame, etc., but it dawned on me that I probably shouldn't be consuming answers to an inorganic chemistry exam. Also moving to making my own bread and pasta with unrefined flour, etc. However, I refuse to give up beer, or coffee. ;) More fruits and veggies as snack food too.

I stopped drinking soda 2.5 years ago cold turkey after my dentist explained how bad it is for your teeth (apparently most energy drinks are just as bad). The decision was easy, as I'd also been looking into how bad most sodas are for you, in general. Turned out to be rather difficult for me, as I'm pretty sure I was addicted to the stuff, at least emotionally. After struggling through the first few months (including guilty dreams where I broke down and drank a Coke), it got easier. Mostly water and milk for me, now.

Now I need to eat better in the rest of my meals.

being a poor graduate student got me off of drinking soda... I didn't really realize how much it cost... and I was trying to keep my weekly supermarket budget around $50.

Get yourself two things: a Brita and a cheap pitcher to make iced tea.

I assume you're talking to tCBG, right?

If was making more money when I dumped soda I'd go for crystal light... I tried it, I liked it, but again, i decided it wasn't worth the price. Now I just drink water and milk... and the occasional beer of course :p

edit: the easiest way to break the soda habit is to just stop buying it... but I never was really an addict. For all the faults we had about food in the house growing up sodas were never much more than the diet variety... besides when my father bought coca-cola. Stop buying soda... switch to water. Water is usually free and available so its not like have to hunt for a machine with bottles of water in them.

I agree. I basically got hooked on the diet Dew and Coke in law school, and it continued for years. When I finally made the break, I had to train myself physically to not repeat what I'd been doing for years. A few times, if I was distracted, I'd wander down to our cafeteria and find myself standing in front of a soda machine. I've had 2-3 over the past month, but nowhere near my normal 2-3 a day. :) I actually seem to be sleeping better too.

Exactly. For me it was with meals, especially at restaurants. I'm so used to having a soda at certain places that it was weird for a while to be eating someplace, and not wash down the food with soda.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

125lb clean and jerk today. Woot!

grumble grumble grumble...

I can't do that... yet.

edit: nothing against you, winger... just the whole male competitive thing going.

4-5 years ago I stopped ordering any kind of soda with a meal and switched to either drinking unsweetened iced tea or water at restaurants. I also switched from having diet soda at home to seltzer water, which still isn't great for your teeth but the carbonation is kind of satisfying if you're used to drinking soda. I've cut back on that too and I try to drink mostly water now. For a while we wasted money on bottled water, but now we just drink tap.

Why is seltzer water not great for your teeth?

125lb clean and jerk today. Woot!

 I can barely deadlift 125.

Part of me thinks it is bad that my Crossfit Affiliate posts the WOD online - today is all running and rowing, and I really hate both, which makes me not want to go.

But I will anyway. It just plants the seed of doubt.

is this one of these crossfit locations that only allow you to work on whatever module is formulated/class scheduled? Are you allowed to operate on your own?

Again, I've only heard things.... I've been only using the gym at work.

-----------

edit: thinking about it more... I can probably 1-rep 125... the power clean would probably be iffy as my form is junk but I'm doing 100 from the hang position... I can probably then push press the 125 the rest of the way.
