Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I bought a pair last month; they are very comfortable and very light on my feet.

I recently bought Inov-8's and I'm in love. I didn't realize that running shoes could make such a difference, but I hate running so much less now.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Asics. And I'm never going back.

In other news... I have committed to a half marathon! It's the one that NMU_27 mentioned previously--http://www.marquettemarathon.com/index.html
:)
And, they do a remarkable job selling and describing the course. Flat and fast, it sounds like :) http://www.marquettemarathon.com/about.html
That is awesome! Good luck to you!

As for me, I've learned that instead of drinking a full pot of coffee in the morning, it's better if I limit myself to two cups and have an extra serving of fruit with breakfast.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Second half this Sunday! Tapering is going quite well- we had some great runs over our vacation this past weekend in California. And my leg seems to be recovering, but am still having issues with the day after a fast run or the day after travelling and sitting still. Or driving a LONG time. Must be something cramping in my leg.

I think it will be ok for Sunday, though. Just a few more runs- like a 5 miler tonight. Maybe even hit my sub 2:00 goal!

'diva- good luck!!! Again- there are tons of training plans on line- I've got one through my trianing group, but Hal Hingdon's site has a bunch of them, too (he's got a lot of good books, too). You'll love it! Just make sure to enjoy the run at some point.... :)

Dexter-Ann Arbor? Good luck. I hope the weather's nice, I plan to enjoy Taste of Ann Arbor Sunday.

Finally good sore from the gym yesterday. I hurt my shoulder doing something wrong a few weeks ago and had been going easy on it. Today's pain is that good, "oh, hello muscle, I must have forgotten about you" pain. I like it.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I bought myself a pair of Under Armour Apparition running shoes this weekend. I was a bit hesitant because I didn't even know UA made shoes before I saw them, but I really needed a new pair of sneakers and the price was right (~$35).

I ran a few miles in them yesterday. No complaints. Way more comfortable than my old New Balances - a lot lighter and cooler, too. If they hold up for 6 months I'll be happy.

Are your parents coffee drinkers as well? Because, I've found that I drink less coffee if I don't make a full pot, but just the amount I know I should drink. If they aren't drinking coffee as well, that would be my suggestion for you--just make the 2 or so cups and be done with it.

Good luck with your second half!
And thanks for the tips. I'm working off a model partially based on a Higdon model, partially advised by my little sister (the trainer-in-training), and partially of my own making. It's 4 days a week of running (1 long run, 1 medium length run, and 2 "shorter" runs), one day of biking, and two of rest.
What advice does anyone have to give in terms of eating during training. Should I be adjusting my diet at all, and if so, how?

Yea- arrive a little early, and you can see the finish of the half marathon- it ends just before you get to Ann St right on Main. I'm hoping to finish right around 11am, sinec the race starts at 9am.

Weather looks ok for Sunday, but I'd love it if it cooled down 10 deg or so.

Good luck with your second half!

Not sure, but I know I've shifted to more carbs and plant based protiens than I have in the past, and am still able to lose weight. And "they" say to get protien after the long runs and the hard short runs.

My normal pre-long run snack is rasin bread with peanut butter + banana. And on a run of more than 8 miles, I also take a gel of some type with me. (oh, and make sure you experiment while you train- know what you plan on taking AND what they plan on supplying- and USE BOTH on long runs. DO NOT EXPERIMENT AT THE RACE!!!!)

Other than that- I'll be interested to hear what others say.

My mom drinks coffee, but not as much as I do, my dad sticks to espresso. I poured the remaining coffee into a jar and put it in the refrigerator; tomorrow, I'm making iced coffee!

Also, I visited a health food/organic store today; think I'll be shopping there more often. I can buy quinoa, kasha, millet, and barley in bulk and save myself a lot of money. Also found a bunch of sodas that didn't have HFCS or aspartame.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

time for new shoes new shoes. I'll go get my gait analyzed and see what's shaking down. Probably will end up with Mizunos again, but wouldn't mind Pearl Izumis either.

So how did you fare in the Boulder 10K?

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I'm at a weird point... my legs start to quiver and my back likes me less and less... but my legs are feeling LIGHTER the last few times doing back squats and I'm still increasing weight... 245 today.

edit: err... lighter as in it doesn't seem to impact my legs all that much... my back needs to be stronger though... that's going to be my downfall right now.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

21 miles tonight and felt good at the end of it. Hoping to push it to 25 or 26 on Saturday.

And I agree about Hal's Site, I am using a modified version of his training plan now.
With crossfit I am running alot less, I am just doing the long and medium run. And actually I feel better than I have for a while.

Finally good sore from the gym yesterday. I hurt my shoulder doing something wrong a few weeks ago and had been going easy on it. Today's pain is that good, "oh, hello muscle, I must have forgotten about you" pain. I like it.
Yeah crippled sore is no fun, but a mild, "hey I am a muscle, and you havent used me in a while" sore is good.

I have dumped pretty much refined anything...sugar, grains. But I also have alot of weight to lose. So I pretty much eat protien, fruits and vegs (for nutrients and carbs) and good healthy fat (which includes butter).

Yeah I need to bit the bullet and go in and get fitted for a pair. I also want to pick up a pair of vibriams and start doing some of my work outs (at least at crossfit, with the shorter runs) in them.

You know its funny, I am just two weeks into the main crossfit program and I am getting the bench marks of how much I can lift, since I have never really lifted before. I will say I am suprised with my strength when it comes to the olympic lifting categories.
DL is at 205
Back squat is at 185
and both have room. That being said, I am also consentrating on form so I dont want to go throwing a ton of weight on there just yet either. I havent been too sore from my lifting days.

Now if you want to talk about a pile of suck. Burpees can only be the tool of the devil.

Same thing I'm doing; in the past year, I've learned how to cook with whole foods, learning how to cook with healthy fat, and after reading Michael Pollan and Nina Planck, am really starting to distrust the FDA when it comes to nutritional advice.

As for my running, I have the Seaway Run 15K coming up in less than four weeks; today was the first day since the River Bank that I ran for 30 consecutive minutes. Hopefully, I'll be ready...

The thing I didn't know about before all this is the "novice effect" an untrained human (male or female) can gain a lot in a short amount of time when starting from scratch. Its just about making the appropriate jumps (which is why dumbells tend not to work) and getting the appropriate recovery.

---

I think when it comes time for running I'll focus on short interval and sprint type of stuff. i'm not really sure I care so much for endurance running (no offense) but I certainly don't want to be slow or be winded when running a distance.

Right now, I'm trying to get my diet into check... gaining 15 pounds when I can and should be losing was not the way I intended to go.

edit: I've started a comma-separated value log of progress based on my co-worker's suggestion... that way I can feed it through stat or other software to track progress.

Yeah our food is kind of crazy. I loved the book Ominovers Delima.
Its hard to know what is right, with so much conflicting advice, research and who is funding that research. Which I can see why alot of people struggle with it.

Yeah I realise right now alot of it is just figuring out where I am. I am sure at some point it wont be as big of gains.
The day i ended up with the 205 DL I started on 135, so yeah right now I truley have no idea what my strength is.
