Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

GREAT JOB!!!

Just don't get discouraged.

You may be trying the walk/run method- but one thing to think about- if you are totally out of breath when you start the walk part, you may be trying to run too fast.

For now, run as fast as you can and still carry on a conversation- in broken up sentaces, of cours, but not so hard that you are bent over panting at the end.

If you run a perfect race, that's how you should be at the FINISH of the race. Not the finish of trianing runs, or in the middle of the run, or any of that.

You may *think* you are going slow, but once you body starts to adjust to the work out, you may find yourself speeding up pretty quickly. I know a year ago, I was running at a +12/min pace (running slower than Mrs was walking), but I came around pretty quickly.

Just be paitent, and enjoy 1) the company, and 2) the scenery. That makes running a whole lot nicer.

It really is amazing how much more you see of your neighborhood just walking around, instead of driving.

I'm liking this workout, as it breaks you into running gradually. I've tried just jogging on my own, and I would get about a quarter of a mile before being unable to continue. With the walk/run (and shorter times to start; they get longer in the coming weeks), I think it's easier to build up endurance. Also, it's more structured, not just leaving me to my own "well, I should be able to do ____" devices.

We don't see each other everyday, so I'm thinking that this is something we can do together when we're together and remark on the progress we're making. :)
This helps, too. :)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Ugh, late night last night playing pickup hockey with a bunch of guys who played D-III or better, and then this morning's CrossFit workout was 100 burpees for time. Who knew 8 minutes could be so painful?

I need to work on my running and endurance. I think I'm just terrible at slow-twitch sports. I find them horrible and painful experiences.

It's not like I'm out of shape - I'm actually in pretty good shape - but whenever I run, I feel like I'm 300 lbs and have never gotten off of the couch in my life.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Finally was able to get my new bike seat. Unfortunately, scheduling will prevent me from biking to work until Friday at the earliest, but at least now I'm able... Also, I'm now down officially 50 lbs.!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Started the Couch to 5K program on Saturday with the bf. We've done the first two workouts so far and have been encouraging each other (okay - he's been doing most of the encouraging). :)
Way to go! :)

An interesting link for those of you in Michigan. (stolen from 'diva on facebook)

Full, half, and kids run available.

September 4, 2010.
If I wasn't already registered for Detroit... :(

As for "real food," I'll definitely be shopping more at farmer's markets, looking into a CSA, and visiting the organic/health food store more often this summer. And when the recipe calls for adding four tablespoons of butter, I'll do it!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Okay, so one of the things I've had a lot of trouble with in CrossFit has been the kipping pull-up. I'm so used to doing dead hang pull ups that I just couldn't get the swing right, so I would swing, do a dead hang pull up, and swing again.

But this morning I did 50 kipping pullups! :D (in 5 sets of 10), and strung together 6 unbroken without dropping down off of the bar to reset (I pretty much did 6-break-4 through each set). Considering I had never gotten even one before this morning, I'm pretty proud of myself.

Now if I could just figure out how to jump rope without being a klutz...

Nice!!! I am proably aways from being able to even doing an assisted pullup, but that being said my pushups have almost progressed all the way to a full pushup on the floor. (off the big tire, gone to a bench, next to the floor?)

We don't see each other everyday, so I'm thinking that this is something we can do together when we're together and remark on the progress we're making. :)
Yeah!!!!

new milestone, managed to climb my first ever 5.7 at yosemite park this past weekend. was top roped and only did about 200 ft, but it was the first climb ever. Glad to say aside from my grip, I wasn't physically taxed at all - crossfit seems to have paid off.

That is sooo cool. I have always wanted to try climbing but I knew I did not have the strength to do it. I am excited that with crossfit I will proably be able to climb in no time!!! It looks like alot of fun.

Yeah I need a plan too, I am not smart enough to make up stuff on the fly, or hold myself accountable, because heck I just made it up, so I just made up today is an off day, right?

From what I read about the results of crossfit it seems like just sticking with the program your running and endurance will be increase as well. Your endurance certainlly will, but I have read on the boards that even with the short runs included in the WOD and the overall fitness you gain, that running distances of up to a half marathon are achiveable, even without logging all the miles. (There seems to be some argument, on the longer distance, and to be honest it looks like it comes down to form).

There is also http://www.crossfitendurance.com/ if you want to do some sport specific training post WOD.

Its a different type of athleticism, but crossfit made the upper body and lower body parts of the climb trivial. My weak point was my grip as real rock climbing is absolutely brutal on your hands.

The overall goal of crossfit was for me to perform well in multiple sports and so far it has done that pretty well i'd say. My constantly improving diet also helps with that too.

Finally hockey this weekend. Will see how the wheels have held up after a hockeyless winter.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Registered for the Seaway Run 15K today; I'll have about 2-3 weeks to train for it. If I treat it as a training run, I really shouldn't have any problems.

And after resting for about 3 weeks, my legs feel as good as ever.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Bolder Boulder 10K on Monday for me. Let's hope the training I put in this year has paid off, shall we?

Rode to work tonight - the 2 miles felt good. We'll see how I feel about biking home...

radio? Did you put any lights on the bike... I saw some of those road-way strips from 3M once (the ones you'll see between white lines on the interstate)... I saved the link somewhere if you're interested

Yeah, I work evenings (until 10 p.m.). The good thing is that this far north, the sun doesn't set until after 9 now (heck, it's even a bit light right now), and will be close to 9:30 by mid summer. That said, I could likely use something like that...

Good luck! :)

As for my running, I'll start training again on Monday. If I can get back to 7-8 miles by race day, I'll be fine.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I'm lucky on the days I can spell sevin-ate miles.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Crossfit's workout of the day a few days ago was 5 sets of 5 backsquats. I think I started at a light 225 just to get back into form as I had been on vacation and ended on 275 for the last set. What gets me is seeing some guys in their 40's put up over 300 for 5 over the entire work out. Thats nuts. On the bright side though , that means there is still plenty of room for improvement on my end and plenty of time to do it.

Word is that Dan Briere , who is about my size, can put up 400 lb + on squats, and I am at 330 lb barely for a one rep. While it might seem a bit crazy to use a full time pro as a target, I really want to try and hit that number within a year. I think its funny people haphazardly make fun of these athletes, but what they can do is just downright nuts.

I think most sports fans (and this includes myself) don't have an appreciation for the level of physical effort that is needed... we tend not to consider players being physically drained or run down when we see a stupid mindless play which is perfectly obvious to us sitting comfortably in our seats.

I don't think using a pro as a target is unfair at all... but when you get to 400 you'll lack the other things that Briere can do due to Briere's genetics (I have to imagine Briere can do more but is likely held back by a strength coach who is to avoid injury at all costs) and you'll have to cut back on other things to get to 400.

But, I think its do-able. I'd like to think I can get to the mid-300s at least by Christmas. Obviously, I won't have the cardio capacity... but i'm just saying it sounds like a reasonable target.

edit: my current targets... lose weight... keep up weight progress by going m/w/f... try to see if I can fill other days of the week with rec league activities (volleyball, ball hockey, indoor soccer... things on those lines).

I bought a pair of running shoes today for general non-lifting gym use... the brand is Brooks. They appear to be very comfy.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Fair point. these guys are genetically well off, and they get paid millions of dollars to stay in shape. Most of them don't do those kind of lifts during the R.S since a season essentially breaks you down. Diet has a lot to do with it, and their budget is significantly higher than mine is. Sure, the cards are stacked against me when comparing to them, but that's not an excuse not to try and get to that level of fitness. If the crossfit folks are any proof, its that great numbers can be achieved through our 30s and into our 40s.

also your numbers are progressing nicely. Faster than me for sure. I never really considered myself very strong, and the numbers I put up are years of working out ( although not a very long time of working out correctly). Ah well, we play with the cards we are delt with.

oh yeah, aesthetics and athletic goals simultaneously are hard to get. Bodybuilders who bulk than cut undergo serious regime changes.

Lets keep in mind that I'm not doing much between days... so you've got the speed and conditioning going for yourself there... I could probably sprint fairly well right now but a run around the block may be questionable.

Sure, the cards are stacked against me when comparing to them, but that's not an excuse not to try and get to that level of fitness.

As I tell myself every day... everything is a work in progress to make tomorrow better.

I bought a pair last month; they are very comfortable and very light on my feet.

And after three weeks of rest, I went for a 20 minute run this morning. Everything feels fine.
