That's the Tigers I know. Maybe Verlander can actually be a stopper tomorrow.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

A triple by Jackson to start the game, a walk to Damon, and then the heart of the order looked like a group of 90 year old men with limp dicks. What a pile of dog****.

We're getting swept in Seattle.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Cabrera clubs a 3-run shot to put us up 3-1. No homer light, as I didn't see it. I was watching Jimmy Howard give up cheesedick rebounds that wound up in the net instead.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Ichiro got doubled off of 1st on a fly/line out to Magglio.

In other news, Smokey the Bear just started a forest fire.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Yea, avoided the sweep. 7-5 and on to Anaheim for four big ones. Maybe we can make fun of firecan Rodney.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Rodney going for the save with the Angels up 2-0. We're still in this one. :D

Edit: **** that was quick.

Another save for Rodney. Tigers 7-7, now. Porcello had good stuff but had poor location.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

I see three problems with this team, as young as the season is.

1) Starting pitching has been spotty. Looking at the basics, Scherzer has a 2.14 ERA, Dontrelle is at 4.24. The other three starters have ERA's over 6, and Bonderman is at 9.00. I suspect that Verlander will come around, but we also have to remember that Porcello is 21 years old, and that King Jeremy does not throw 95 anymore.

2) Outside of Cabrera and Magglio, this team has shown next to no pop at the plate. We're hitting .275 as a team, but only Cabrera (4), Maggs (3) and Guillen (1) have homered. As a team we're only slugging about .405. That's downright anemic. Dontrelle got shafted by this offense two nights ago, and we waited until it was 6-0 last night until the bats got going. On Sunday we drew 9 walks and exactly zero of those walks came around to touch home plate. We should have scored 10 runs on Sunday, but we needed Valverde to close it out.

The only time this offense has shown any consistency is when we were pounding the AA-caliber bullpens of Kansas City and Cleveland.

3) We've gotten exactly zero production from behind the plate. Gump Laird is hitting .125 and Alex Avila has somehow found a way to hit worse, at .111.

I'm still convinced that this is about a .500 team, and that the bats should start to show signs of life in Texas. Actually, I'd start to worry if we don't start to hit in Arlington. Everyone else seems to.

Johnny Damon was a *ing idiot on that at bat. Not once, but twice:

1) Jared Weaver has been pounding the strike zone all night. You knew he was going to get that call. With 2 strikes, you've got to be swinging the bat on anything that close. And yes, I thought that was a strike.

2) His actions after taking the called 3rd were idiotic. I knew he was a goner as soon as he started drawing lines in the dirt with his bat. He had no right to ***** in the first place, and then he went and did that. It's like he wanted to be ejected.

Absolutely selfish and stupid actions on Damon's part. He hurt this team badly tonight as a result. I didn't realize it was possible to play ball with your head up your ***.

I'm betting Damon's ejection had more to do with taking a close backwards K in a VERY key spot last night.

The offense has sucked, but I was impressed with Austin Jackson having a great at-bat late last night right before Damon's big strikeout. That at least shows some promise. If Verlander gets his ERA back to where he is capable of, the pitching staff is fine. You can't have 5 Cy Young candidates out there. They've go ta respectable big league rotation.

Bonderman finished with a quality start tonight despite having a typical Bonderman first inning, which isn't too bad either.

There's no way this team has the firepower to compete with the Twins in the Central though. They've looked really good so fire.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

I also suspect that on the way home from Texas at the end of this road trip, the Tigers are going to make a pit stop in Toledo, and at that point I think they're going to leave Alex Avila there unless he really picks it up soon. He's struggling to hit .100. They've got to get some production from behind the plate.

This team has shown no power whatsoever up and down the lineup outside of Cabrera (who is killing the ball right now) and Magglio this season. Sure, Don Kelly hit his first bomb to straightaway center tonight, but only 4 Tigers have homers as of right now. You can't slug .400 as a team and expect to do anything.

CABRERA!!!

3-3, top 9

Big Boy did it again. That ball was smoked.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

They just pinch hit Laird for Avila. That's a pretty clear sign that Avila needs some time in Toledo.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Well, there was the lefty-lefty matchup that Avila would have presented as well. But yeah, I can't second-guess that one for an instant.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Jesus Titty****ing Christ, Guillen.

Just how the * do you get picked off 2nd base in the 9th inning?!?!?

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Gump Laird scores from 2nd on a ball hit to left, a ball that traveled total of about 138 feet.

Is there a full moon tonight?

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Valverde closes out the 9th.

I don't know whether to laugh or shake my head in disbelief.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Put that one in the "snatched victory from the jaws of defeat" category. I even refused to watch after the BP homer Bondo gave up in the first. Hockey was so much more appealing. But I did see the 9th inning and how bad the fans turned on Fuentes. I'm sure Rodney's going "Glad it ain't me, now."
Valverde hasn't had any big meltdown moments yet, so that's a plus.

Pitching=??. Good thing for KC and Cleveland. Verlander and Porcello aren't exactly lighting it up. Sherzer for Jackson looks to be a wash right now. No telling that Robertson would be any better than Bonderman and Willis is at least pitching innings beyond the third.

And yes, the lack of power is duly noted. That is the price paid for trading Granderson and Thames. They may go 0-20, but they'd hit a few more bombs too. Even Polanco looks like Babe freaking Ruth compared to Sizemore. And WhereTF is Inge's HR prowess? That added power to Laird-o? Obviously Jackson and Damon will get on base to set up the power in the lineup, but haven't done it against better pitching.

What's even more asinine is that Leyland still thinks he has Earl Weaver's 70's lineup, playing for the 3 run HR instead of sacrificing runners. They'll be in big trouble if Ordonez, Miggy and Guillen slump for any period of time. Look for smart teams to start pitching around Miggy regardless.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

So we do everything right in the first inning and stake Verlander to a 2-0 lead before he throws his first pitch. And you can guess what happens in the bottom half: he gives it right back with a 35 pitch first inning partially because he sat there and nibbledicked it around the plate instead of going after hitters.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Now we get another one, mainly due a double from Gump Laird, of all people. Let's see just how many pitches Verlander thinks he needs to throw to give this one back.
