Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer
I see three problems with this team, as young as the season is.
1) Starting pitching has been spotty. Looking at the basics, Scherzer has a 2.14 ERA, Dontrelle is at 4.24. The other three starters have ERA's over 6, and Bonderman is at 9.00. I suspect that Verlander will come around, but we also have to remember that Porcello is 21 years old, and that King Jeremy does not throw 95 anymore.
2) Outside of Cabrera and Magglio, this team has shown next to no pop at the plate. We're hitting .275 as a team, but only Cabrera (4), Maggs (3) and Guillen (1) have homered. As a team we're only slugging about .405. That's downright anemic. Dontrelle got shafted by this offense two nights ago, and we waited until it was 6-0 last night until the bats got going. On Sunday we drew 9 walks and exactly zero of those walks came around to touch home plate. We should have scored 10 runs on Sunday, but we needed Valverde to close it out.
The only time this offense has shown any consistency is when we were pounding the AA-caliber bullpens of Kansas City and Cleveland.
3) We've gotten exactly zero production from behind the plate. Gump Laird is hitting .125 and Alex Avila has somehow found a way to hit worse, at .111.
I'm still convinced that this is about a .500 team, and that the bats should start to show signs of life in Texas. Actually, I'd start to worry if we don't start to hit in Arlington. Everyone else seems to.
