Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

I've really been putting a lot of thought into our division lately...
Is it April yet?

wow! Thanks Billy, I enjoyed reading your opinions. One thing I haven't heard a lot about is what effect the Twins' move outdoors might have on their prior homefield domination (I think it obviously hurts them, giving another advantage to the Tigers and Sox even before Nathan went down). Looking forward to our visit to Minny this year, but might not make it until Sept.
My brothers are coming home from a week in Lakeland. Looking forward to their analysis as well.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

22yrs prior to the dome the Twins made the playoffs three times. 17yrs in the dome and they have made the playoffs 6-7 times.

Is it the stadium or philosophy?

If you think it is philosophy, how much of that philosophy included building a team with the dome in mind? A lot? Some? None?

I think the philosophy had a quite a bit to do with the stadium, from the draft on up. Add in the intangibles of the dome (white roof, AC on/off, magic carpet, etc) and it worked out well.

It will be interesting to see how the intangibles of Target field will affect the players, hitting and pitching in the cold. Postponed games due to weather on their home field and the issues that may create pitching wise...

How will Morneau's bad back react to MN baseball in April?

How long til the newness wears off and fans start coming to the games end of May instead of April due to weather?

The first domino has fallen re: the rotation. Armando Galarraga has been optioned to Toledo.

I have the feeling that Eddie Bonine is going to somehow pitch his way into the rotation, and that a big contract is going to get eaten by the end of the month. It's either going to be Dontrelle or Robertson. They're going to do everything under the sun to get Bonderman into the rotation.

The starting rotation has really got to be worrying the Tigers. Verlander has been up and down, but that is really just working kinks out. Porcello has been quietly effective. Robertson apparently pitched well the other day, but gave up too may hits and base runners. Bonderman is getting belted around because he hasn't found that breaking ball he once had, and is still experimenting with a split finger fastball. Willis has been nominal to terrible. A Bonine in the rotation as a fifth is a real possibility early in the season.

Also- zoom zoom is more like putt-putt. No breaking ball, and getting drilled. That doesn't bode well for bullpen depth.

Let's see if the Tigers can produce all of these spring training runs for real. The spin has already started, Magglio is in the best condition he has ever been, and Laird has bulked up and is hitting for power again. yeah, yeah yeah.

Still looking forward to this. :)

Even though I'm a Twins fan, I've come to appreciate the Tigers. The friendly rivalry had with the boy helped. Guitar Hero was amazing to watch before he hurt himself. I've been waiting for his return. If he ever gets his stuff back, I'll once again be waiting for him to kill someone with that errant fastball.

Magglio is hitting the ball well, so nothing to go batty about there. It appears that Austin Jackson may be the answer in CF. Scott Sizemore was hitting a whopping .145 as of a few days ago. I'm not sold there.

I'm not as concerned about the rotation as I am the bullpen. Zumaya has the velocity back, but there's either no movement or he's tipping his pitches and the hitters are getting a good look at everything. Zach Miner is about what I thought he would be: not much. How a guy can throw that hard and get hit that hard tells me that he's got the same problem Zumaya has. Bobby Seay's impending trip to the DL (and let's not fool ourselves here: that's where he's headed) leaves another hole in the pen.

Dontrelle appears to have a general idea of where the strike zone is for the first time in about 4 years. He wasn't right yesterday, but he did go 3 innings, walked only one and dotted a guy. I'll take it for the moment. If I had to guess he's ahead of Robertson at the moment for a spot on the roster.

Bonderman has his fastball, a slider and he's trying to learn a splitter. If he doesn't learn a 3rd pitch, he's going to be nothing more than a 10-12 game winner whose talent could get plenty of GM's and pitching coaches fired over the course of his career.

At this point of spring training it's a matter of getting the regulars ready to go, keeping everyone healthy, and hoping that Sizemore's bat comes around enough so that he's not hitting .165 in May.

yeah, I looked at Willis' numbers, and they are actually pretty good this spring. Then again, his condition is probably not affected when the games don't count.

Sizemore will be a project. Nothing like having your middle infield batting under .225. Maybe Santiago will see more time at 2b.

Even I can hit a pitcher that throws nothing but straight heat. The bullpen.. ugh.

Oh, and just for Billy- Granderson is hitting .165 for the Yanks.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Alex Avila will be the backup catcher, beating out Robinson Diaz. I wonder about that decision a bit, only because I'm not sure how many AB's Avila is going to get. I wonder if he'd be better served on Toledo getting his turn at the plate and continuing to hone that swing. However, I'm not going to make too big of a stink about the backup catcher on Opening Day.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Tigers trade Nate Robertson to Marlins for LHP Jay Voss

Can we assume that Voss will pitch at Toledo, and that the drama concerning the rotation is over?
*raises eyebrows*

I would think so. I'm not sure what to think about Dontrelle effectively beating out Robertson for the last spot. That's essentially what happened, necessitating this trade.

I think Hammer is going to have a parade. :)
No, Gerald Laird is still our starting catcher.

Oh, and Cabrera just hit one halfway to Atlanta. He's ready. :D

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

And Dontrelle promptly falls apart, walking two in the 4th, leading to 4 runs, and two more in the 5th. Ohh-boy.

It's going to be a fun April....

I don't know what the heck Dombrowski and crew still see in Willis. It was a terrible contract and I understand they want a chance to get something for their money, but at what point are they going to stop wasting their time on him?

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

After this season. This is his walk year.

Willis outpitched Robertson this spring, and until the 4th inning today, had an idea of where home plate was. So they took Robertson and his contract and sent it for a AA/AAA pitcher.

And if he *s up in the next month, Eddie Bonine is an hour and change away in Toledo, although I'm not exactly thrilled with that prospect, either.

I think Avila will get plenty of at-bats as back-up catcher. Part of the problem with Laird last year was that he caught too many innings early on and got worn down. Give Avila plenty of time and hopefully it makes Laird more effective too.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Upon further review, it appears that Eddie Bonine will be on the Opening Day roster.

Looks like the last roster spot is down to Don Kelly or Clete Thomas. My money is on Kelly at the moment.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Wait a sec, the Tigers are still paying Robertson 9.something million to play in Florida. I'd think if they're going to pay him the cash he should at least give up 8 runs in our own Division than in the NL East.
