Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Every ******* fan wants to call him a failure when it is WAY too early to say he's anything at all. I'm surprised at all the negative stuff being said after 2 games. Has he looked bad? Yes, but so do a lot of rookie QBs.
Not Sanchez....Ryan.....Flacco.....

huh, when was the last time a rookie QB looked this bad? I'd say Tavaris Jackson, but he didn't prove his suckitude until his second season. Alex Smith was pretty terrible, but did he play his first year? Leinert sucked some too, but not sure if he started either. :p

You guys could always start Daunte instead...

edit: its only been about 18 years since the Twins won the World Series, I'm pretty sure that is less than 20! :p

Awwww, you are so cute.

Until either team wins a Superbowl we are even. In fact the Lions actually may be ahead, considering we have 4 world championships, while Minnesota has 1.

When was the last time a Minnesota Pro Sports team won ANY championship? Without looking it up I'd have to say it's been at least 20 years.

I'll take being a Lions fan any day over being a fan of a team who's main team color is PURPLE.

Wow...you are a sad little man and I weep for you...nah who am I kidding I smile thinking of you in your Honolulu Blue bed sheets jerking off to your picture of Wayne Fontes thinking "This will be the year we finally get to .500"! :D

GLM what is worse, supporting the Lions or being associated with the likes of Little Willy here? :D

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Tough call there. I guess this is what it feels like to be an NMU fan.

Or an MTU fan...I mean NMU won a title in the 90's, whereas MTU has sucked for 3 decades! :D

'Cause little Willy, Willy won't go home
But you can't push Willy round
Willy won't go, try tellin' everybody but, oh no
Little Willy, Willy won't go home

:D

It's not a picture of Cocaine Wayne, it's a lifesize cut out of Bobby Ross :D . My wife only allows me to put it in the living room on football Sundays though.

Keep trashing the Lions, because it's the only thing you've got.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

The funny thing is that I believe Stafford has probably been the one highlight of the lions season so far. You can't fault a rookie quarterback because the team lost 17 games in a row before he came along and sucks. I"d say its more the coaches fault for putting him into this situation this early, than saying he sucks because he gave the lions the chance to win this game until their offensive line and defense fell apart in the 2nd half. You can only hold back the awesomeness that is Adrian Peterson, Brett Favre, Pat Williams, Ben Leber, Chad Greenway, Jared Allen so long. :)

Except they've won a football championship more recently than the Lions too.

You say these things like they're hurtful words that will affect other Lions fans.

Trust me when I say, the Lions can hurt us fans way more than any words from other teams fans can.

Actually I have plenty...but this is a thread about the Lions...and well I am not really trashing them, I am trashing you :D

GLM,

Now I get what you meant :)

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

I already rescinded my prediction before this game started. Apparently you missed that post in the thread.

You can't make a prediction and then take it back when you see how bad the Lions actually are. That's against the rules. Kinda like when John Kruk predicted the Yankees would win 130 games a couple years ago...and followed that up by saying the Red Sox would win the division. You have to make sure you're not totally full of crap before you make a prediction that dumb. ;)

I wish I could get a $78 million dollar contract to suck at quarterback and crush the hopes of thousands upon thousands of people every Sunday.

Hell, I'm such a nice guy, I'd do it for half...

With all due respect, Lions fans' hopes should have been crushed long before Stafford came to town.
True, its a hell of a thing to be a NFL QB when you have no Oline in front of you.

Every ******* fan wants to call him a failure when it is WAY too early to say he's anything at all. I'm surprised at all the negative stuff being said after 2 games. Has he looked bad? Yes, but so do a lot of rookie QBs. I think a lot of people just want to be right who said not to draft him after only 2 games. I think some people want him to fail just so they can say 'i told you so'. I wasnt expecting much from him this year, its just part of what you have to do with a young qb, let him learn on the job and learn from his mistakes now so he has an idea what he is doing once we get a team around him (which will hopefully happen one day, but with the Lions you never know). He's a rookie with horrendous pass protection (Jeff Backus, you're supposed to block Jared Allen, and if there is a fumble, you're supposed to try and recover it.) and a coordinator that is being way too conservative in his play-calling to protect his rookie QB. Here's a tip, Linehan. If you always run on downs 1 and 2, they will eventually figure it out, and waiting until 3rd and long or in the 4th quarter to let your QB throw further downfield than 5 yards, you're setting him up to fail. Stop with the disgusting conservative play-calling. He's going to make mistakes, it's inevitable. Let him make them, so he can learn from them and be ready to win when they start playing the Rams, Browns, 49ers, etc.

Peyton Manning had VERY similar talent around him in his first year in the league. He also had 2 td's, 6 int's and 2 losses after two games.
Peyton also have some assemblence of a line in front of him.

Except they've won a football championship more recently than the Lions too.
1975 for those playing at home.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

while you guys continue to lean on our hapless billy, some comments about the game.

First of all, I do agree to a point that the Vikings didn't exactly look ready to play the entire first half. Detroit played their small amounts of play pretty well, moved the ball ok- so once we get to a mostly bad team, there's a decent chance we can score some more. Last week was an abomination WRT the number of point scored by the Lions.

For the O- opinion question- does stafford look like he's struggling due to the relatively simple offence they are running? Or is he just struggling? One of his INT's was SO obvious- the linebacker ran right along with Matthew until he threw the ball- easy pick. IMHO, the line looks *better* than last year, but, sadly, that's not saying a huge amount. They are running better, at least.

The D is killing me. They look like 11 players who all want to play by themselves. Is it because they all want to be the savior or just selfish? I don't care. But how many times will the outside guy commit to the inside run only to get beaten like a dead horse on the USCHO Cafe to learn to force the runner INSIDE to let your team mates tackle him???

I'll give them some credit in getting some key stops and pressure *sometimes*- that should tell them in a LOUD voice what happens when you work together.....

That second half D was pretty sad.

IMO he is just struggling. The good news is no one expects the Lions to be any good for a few years so he has time to develop, but he's not a NFL caliber QB yet and his play in the first two weeks just confirms all the fan complaints when he was drafted.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

I do agree with BB on one thing – I think it’s too early to rule on Stafford. I have my doubts on him based upon some observations made by analysts while was in college, but he wouldn't be the first legit starting QB to struggle this poorly this early and it's quite possible he'll turn out good/great.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

And if not, the next savior will arrive in 3-4 years.

He looked like a rookie yesterday. I expected that out of him this year. Now, if he's throwing picks that next year, any and all bets are off.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

The offensive line did okay against one of the best D-Lines in the game. The Lions rushed for 129 yards, had the advantage on Time of Possession, and held the Vikings to 2 sacks and 2 more QB hits (this is compared to 3 sacks and 7 QB hits for the Lions Defense). I'm usually fairly critical of our offensive line...But Jared Allen is one of the best defensive end's in the league and we held Minnesota to two sacks and a limited number of QB hits (in addition to a nice game run-blocking). Some of that is due to Stafford. As advertised, he does a nice job buying himself time by moving in the pocket -- and he has a fairly quick release. But still, against a defensive line as good as Minnesota's, that was a strong performance by our o-line.

It came down really to turnovers. Two of the three Minnesota scored 14 points off of. This was a team loss. There were plenty of positives in the first half, and the Lions went into the half with a slim lead. The Vikings went on to score 27 unanswered points. That didn't happen exclusively because of a rookie QB playing in his second NFL game. Plenty of people can share in that blame.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Ernie Sims is out with what Schwartz calls a "significant shoulder injury". This will be the first game he has missed in three years.

Hello DeAndre Levy!

I think Sims' days were numbered once Schwartz was hired. Here's hoping that Levy works well with Foote and Peterson!

The way I am reading your post, you are insinuating that Sims isn't hurt as badly as he is and that Schwartz was looking for a reason to bump him out. I don't think that is the case at all. Schwartz mentioned in his presser yesterday that Sims fell awkwardly out of bounds onto his shoulder and that it didn't look good.

Where do you get the impression that he doesn't like Sims?
