Demcratic Challengers 11: Saving the Republic one voter at a time!

If old uncle Joe stays upright through the fall - and I think he looks pretty bright and energetic next to Trump - he will win the election. I think the killing shot would be to name an Obama (either one) as “Vice president” to run the hard things.

Sasha and Malia haven't reached their 35th birthday.

Biden winning means the dems once again couldnt find anyone useful to run.

I don't think that assessment is either accurate or useful. The party holds itself out as being diverse and inclusive, creating a range of values that makes it extremely difficult to make a simple majority happy. Several D candidates this season were better WH prospects than any candidate the Rs have put out there for 30 years.

I doubt they would do that but putting Michelle in as VP would be fine with me.

What does the candidates being better at the job (vs R prospects) have to do with actual ability to win the job in the first place?

If you cant win, you arent useful as a candidate. Most of them were never going to be viable candidates from the start.

This is a great article. Sanders has a pathway to victory. He should read this. And it doesn’t require wholesale abandonment of his values.

Given the states that are still to go, I think his only shot is getting Abrams as VP. And soon.

He’s not winning a brokered convention and there aren’t enough west coast states, nor are they populated enough, to get over the deadlocks/Biden wins in the East.

There is no way in hell Abrams is joining in until the nominee has been decided. No way.

I'd bet she wants nothing to do with it.
Hell I'm skeptical they could convince Barack to take the SCOTUS Seat.

JOE BIDEN IN THE MUTHAFUKIN HOUSE!!!!

Ah c'mon, somebody had to say it. ;)

Some thoughts:

1) has anyone seen trix or tica, and if so please keep them away from sharp objects

2) I've never seen anything like this in my life - a guy goes from dead to frontrunner inside of a week. Shows the value of coalition building however. Of all the candidates in all the debates, Uncle Joe tried to stay everyone's friend. Sure paid off when it came time for endorsements. In the meantime Sanders surrogates like Ellison are trolling Senators from their own state as they depart the race (once again: THIS is the guy Scooby wanted running the DNC?).

3) At the end of the day, even the most ardent Sanders supporter has to conclude that his revolution doesn't exist. Or, if it does it has an odd habit of not showing up on election days. I'm cool with him doing well with the college age set, but they aren't turning out in overwhelming #'s like he promised. Furthermore, his vote totals from 2016 to 2020 are cratering. That means as his voters get older, they leave his coalition and look elsewhere. Once this is over Sanders needs to bow out and hand the reins of his movement to AOC.

4) Finally for all of the whining and bleating about the process and whatnot, the system worked. Nobody can realistically claim they got screwed out of the nomination. We'd had 900 debates already. The big money guy got crushed by a guy who was broke but won anyway. Obviously the contest isn't over yet and it should continue until someone secures the majority of delegates. BUT, Sanders losing MA, ME (probably), MN and only hitting 50% in his own state? Yikes. Perhaps he has a revival like Zombie Joe and his Undead Campaign, but he needs to do it on unfriendly turf (FL, GA, MS, LA have yet to vote).

5) A scholarly poster once wrote out here that black voters aren't significant when I mentioned months ago that someone needs to chip into Biden's AA #'s before Super Tuesday. Wepler or Hepler or something like that. Curious if said poster still stands by that theory. ;)

Bernie won early voters, Biden absolutely cleaned up in late deciders.

I said after Iowa if the moderates coalesced, they'd win. If they didn't, Bernie would take the plurality and run with it. They coalesced, and last night was the result.

The numbers appear to indicate that Bernie did not expand his base from the last time. He had a few years to do that. Didn't happen. This is just a case of the establishment figuring out how Trump won the GOP nod and making sure it didn't happen again. The Clyburn endorsement in South Carolina was massive. Reports are that Clyburn was considering Sanders after Nevada but changed his mind after the debate in South Carolina. People who think debates don't matter really screwed up.

Re: Demcratic Challengers 11: Saving the Republic one voter at a time!

I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot of 2016 comparisons but a big difference that I see is Biden has a personality where Hillary does not. Really, nobody could relate to her or her life experiences except for when her husband was caught cheating on her.

Biden on the other hand is your old Uncle. He makes you cringe and his stories go on for way too long, but he loves you, he's basically a good guy and he's always on your side on the important stuff. No, college kids aren't going to flock to his candidacy, but hell they aren't flocking to Bernie's in overwhelming numbers either. Given the BIG jump in turnout, and the overwhelming Biden victories, its easy to conclude that he's bringing in former Republicans who jumped ship. That could end up being much more valuable.

And it wouldnt be enough. Bernie is so under water with African Americans over 45 I doubt she could make up the ground. He is going to get trounced in the rest of the South except probably Georgia if she joins.

Biden won Super Tuesday the same way Obama won the nomination in 2008...massive landslides in smaller states which netted him huge delegate counts. While Bernie was out trying to win the big states Biden was getting endorsements to lock up the Southern and Eastern States and won by such large margins that even a landslide in California likely wont give Bernie the lead when all is said and done.

Obama's former campaign manager gave the perfect example last night. In '08 Clinton won NJ by about 10 points on Super Tuesday. NJ is a rather large state but she ultimately netted only 11 delegates. Same night Obama won the Idaho Caucus by over 60 points and netted 12 delegates. Primary season is a different type of campaign and Bernie's team didnt see how the math worked.

As for the vox piece, they are right but it is too late now. Bernie needed to make that shift earlier. If he had come out of tonight with the lead then they are correct now is the perfect time but the only thing that can really help him now is for Biden to falter in debates or in speeches. A Bernie pivot now will be seen as weak by many and selling out by his base. That is the problem with running as an insurgent you cant pivot and play nice unless you are winning. And since every part of his electoral rhetoric was destroyed last night it will look doubly bad.

I hate to admit it, but Biden really did inspire a lot of people to vote last night. Bernie's base did not show up in the numbers he needed...and it wasnt because it was rigged and it wasnt because of suppression, it was because they just didnt outside of college campuses. Just like in 2018 White Suburbanites, Women and African Americans came out in droves and they did so for Biden. The youth vote did what they always do...yelled the loudest but couldnt get past the fact that their numbers just arent enough to win on their own against the rest of the Dem coalition.
