Re: Dead Thread 2019-???: Yep, They're Still Dead.

Maybe not. It has a bunch of non-sports stories on the front page right now, including Roth who does not suffer fools gladly.

Yeah, his story was from yesterday. There hasn't been a new story since 3:30pm (CT) today. Half their staff quit en-masse.

It’s dead.

Hopefully they reform somewhere. I’d subscribe. That place was one of the best comments sections on the internet.

I don't think G/O realizes the Commentariat will follow the talent, not the label. No more traffic --> no more ad revenue --> no more G/O Media. F-ck em.

Exactly. I told my fiancée this was awesome if only because it ****s the equity firm by making their expensive crown jewel worthless.

Especially with something like those sites which depend on freshness. Literally every bit of their IP is worthless once it's a week old.

It's like they own Robinson Cano.

I haven't followed along with any of this but what's the kerfuffle? Does this also mean that Jezebel, Gizmodo, et al are going down as well?

The kerfuffle is word came down the chain to stop mixing politics with sports. Everybody objected (of course) and one of the longest serving, most popular, and most respected writers (Barry Petchesky) was fired for insubordination.

To the extent the other sites' readers are in solidarity with Deadspin's, they will either fold or die on the vine. There is significant overlap between the readership of the various sites in the suite, so I assume the whole thing collapses.

The question is, why did G/O commit seppuku over politics? Was it because management went to SJHovey Business College for Middle Level Martinets Who Don't Lead Good and decided to swing their d-cks around (and of course lost) or because ownership had their feewies hurt by criticism of Dump and the Nazis?

Dunno. But it likely means the onion dies too.

Most will land jobs. But it will never be the same.

Re: Dead Thread 2019-???: Yep, They're Still Dead.

G/O is dumb money. Like, most PE firms buy things with tangible value or at least the value is tied up in something that can be sold.

G/O as a site had value in the writers and readers. Full stop. There was nothing that site had that can’t be duplicated elsewhere. You lose the sole thing that brings value, you lose the value.

Dumb.
