Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!
Cadets sink Cards in overtime JOHN CORYER
PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team put seven goals in the net Wednesday night against No. 2-ranked Norwich University.
It, however, wasn't enough.
Renee Lortie's goal with 45 seconds gone in overtime lifted the Cadets to a wild 8-7 victory over the Cardinals at the Stafford Ice Arena.
Norwich improved to 19-2-1 overall, while the tough loss dropped the Cardinals, who were seeking a big non-conference win, to 15-5-2 overall. It was the second overtime win for the Cadets over Plattsburgh this season.
"The girls are crushed," Plattsburgh State coach Kevin Houle said. "I feel for them because they gave everything they had."
Lortie's goal from in close put an end to a high-scoring affair that had both teams lethal on the power play. The Cadets were 4-of-5 with a player advantage, while the Cardinals were 4-of-4.
"No doubt, it's disappointing to lose," Houle said. "I didn't envision an 8-7 game. We had opportunities — we had the lead different times and a chance to build on it.
"But, we took some undisciplined penalties. Both teams took advantage of their power play, and both teams squandered some chances."
The Cadets were whistled for four penalties for eight minutes and the Cardinals six for 23 minutes. Included was a 5-minute slashing penalty in the second period that cost Plattsburgh dearly.
Jillayne DeBus scored three goals and assisted on another for the Cadets, who finished with a 39-32 edge in shots on goal.
Shannon Stewart had a big game for the Cardinals with three goals and two assists. Teal Gove added a goal and three assists.
The two teams combined for six goals in the third period. DeBus tallied twice and Stephanie Invernizzi once for Norwich. Stewart had two goals and Teal Gove one for the Cardinals.
Stewart gave Plattsburgh a 7-6 lead at the 12:24 mark, but Invernizzi's goal at 14:15 forced overtime for the Cadets.
Brittany Sharman and DeBus scored in the first period, while Justin Fisher and Morgan MacInnis answered for the Cardinals as the team battled to a 2-all draw.
Plattsburgh came out strong in the second and goals by Stewart and Erika Shaubel gave the Cardinals a 4-2 lead in the first six minutes.
But then came the 5-minute major for slashing and Norwich tallied twice to tie it when Jacqueline Perez found the back of the net at 10:23 and Meghan Papagno on a rebound at 12:24 to make it 4-all.
Prior to Wednesday night, the most goals Plattsburgh State had allowed in a game this season was five to Neumann College and the most by Norwich four in an early-season loss to RIT.
"Some nights the puck doesn't go in the net for either team," Houle said. "Tonight, it was going in the net for both teams."
The Cardinals will need to shake this one off before heading out on the road this weekend to close out ECAC West play at Utica College on Saturday and Sunday.
