D3 Regional Rankings and Bracketology

With Plattsburgh controlling Utica and Adrian winning...it looks pretty wrapped up.

The UMB win makes things a little interesting. UMB should go to Plattsburgh. With Elmira being the only team within 500 miles of Adrian, they would hypothetically go there...leaving Middlebury/Amherst to play again. So do they screw Plattsburgh, fly a couple of teams or have a conference match up in the quarterfinals.

3 main options:

Option A
NCAA goes with bracket integrity, avoiding flights
UMB @ Plattsburgh
Elmira @ Adrian
Amherst @ Middlebury
St. Thomas @ River Falls

Option B
What I think would be the best thing...to keep closest to bracket integrity...without multiple flights

UMB to Adrian
St. Thomas to River Falls
Amherst to Plattsburgh
Middlebury to Elmira (or vice versa...does this move Middlebury above Elmira?)

Option C
What probably happens with the NCAA cheapness.
St. Thomas to River Falls
Elmira to Adrian
UMB to Middlebury
Amherst to Plattsburgh.

Of Course there is always Option D (2 flights)
UMB @ Plattsburgh
St Thomas @ Adrian
Amherst @ River Falls
Middlebury @ Elmira

My Money is Option B...but we'll see

I suppose Option B could be Amherst to Adrian, UMB to Plattsburgh

I like A and D, but I know both are effectively prohibited by the rules. B looks nice, but my money is on C

Re: D3 Regional Rankings and Bracketology

Looking at the way the NCAA rules are written, Elmira is the only one in the East within the 500 mile rule of Adrian. So that will be a forced matchup. With their loss on Saturday I would expect them to be 4East.
East Rankings (1) Plattsburgh (2) Middlebury (3) Amherst (4) Elmira (5) UMB
West Rankings (1) Adrian (2) UW River Falls (3) St. Thomas
With Elmira going to Adrian. That would leave the other QF on the west side to be UW River Falls vs. St. Thomas
On the East by the rankings you would get Plattsburgh vs. UMB and Middlebury vs. Amherst. But since Amherst and Middlebury are in the same conference Plattsburgh will get Amherst and Middlebury will get UMB.

I guess the key word here is "should"

Once selected, teams will be grouped in clusters according to natural geographic proximity. A team may be
moved to balance the bracket if geographic proximity is maintained (i.e., no flights are created). Teams should be
paired and eligible sites should be selected according to geographic proximity (within 500 miles).
Teams may be seeded on a regional basis using the selection criteria. However, geographic proximity takes precedence
over seeding.
Teams from the same conference will not be paired to play each other in the first contest of the regional tournament as long
as geographic proximity is maintained.

I think most would disagree with your assertion that Elmira is the 4E.

Re: D3 Regional Rankings and Bracketology

To prevent favoritism, The division winners should be seeded first with at large teams added filling out the bottom seeds........

....... past UMB parent here..... last season Adrian traveled to UMB, needed goal with 3:17 left to tie 2-2. shots on goal thru OT was 33-33

That doesn't happen in any other NCAA tournament...why would it happen here?

Congrats to UMB for their tough play against Adrian last year...cuz that matters apparently.

............ we all thought Adrian was a club team just starting out.....lol

Re: D3 Regional Rankings and Bracketology

Has the NCAA ever awarded an at large bid to a team did not play in their conference championship?
At least once. 2006. Utica defeats Elmira 4-1 in ECAC-W semi and then loses to Plattsburgh 4-0 in the conference championship game. Elmira travels to Plattsburgh for first round of NCAA and loses 4-1. Plattsburgh loses to Middlebury in the National Championship game.

Re: D3 Regional Rankings and Bracketology

Since the NCAA isn't supposed to weigh any game more significantly than any other (i.e. they don't care if yesterday was a conference tourney game at all, let alone whether it was a QF, SF, or the final), it shouldn't matter that Elmira lost yesterday in the semi-final. They are still the second or third best team in the east. I think they are still second.

Re: D3 Regional Rankings and Bracketology

It is probably the most logical outcome...you just hope that the NCAA does the right thing and doesn't pair two top tier teams in the first round...however if your gonna win it all, you have to beat the best teams anyway

It's going to be option C.

Re: D3 Regional Rankings and Bracketology

Gotta appreciate the desperate attempt to get a West team in the final by putting Adrian and UWRF/STT on the same side of the bracket.

I think there is a good chance Adrian was the 2nd overall seed. Also, this is setup nicely for the West to host the FF this year should Adrian beat Elmira.
