D3 Hockey is back!

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Okay, I think we've hit rock bottom. Stevenson beat Daniel Webster 17-0 tonight. Fine. I get that one. But if that wasn't bad enough, the shots were 107-6.

Enough is enough, Daniel Webster. The AD needs to step in and cancel the rest of the season. It's not the girls' fault. You're skating 6 girls on a nightly basis and only dressing one goaltender. This isn't competition. This isn't safe for the girls. Shut it down for the rest of the spring, regroup, recruit some more, and give it another go next fall before you really get someone hurt here.

Why does this bother you? Are the ladies playing not capable of making their own decision? Just because it's not safe for you to do a Spartan Race doesn't mean others can't.

Look at the bright side, the goalie had 90 saves!!!!! 90

And as their schedule shows Stevenson isn't even that good. Imagine if DW played a top team like Plattsburgh, Amherst, Elmira, etc?! There would be 200 shots. Oh wait. Maybe not. Those coaches have the class to have their players back off in some way. 39 shots in the 3rd period? Really?! No class shown there.

Who are we to decide what these girl's want to do. Maybe they don't care about the score and are just happy going out and playing the game of hockey. There's more to a season then win and loses. I actual give the girls credit for staying the course and not giving up.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Sheeran again! Takes it by herself through the neutral zone into the slot and beats Crawford. 2-0.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Ames scores in a scrum to make it 3-0. Elmira pulls Crawford and puts in Kyle Nelson.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Plattsburgh is making Elmira look like a middle of the pack team. They appear unstoppable! Great pace of play too!

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Elmira clawing back in it, 4-2 with the Soaring Eagles on the 5-3 advantage. Those penalties were questionable, especially because the zebras were swallowing the whistle on penalties against Plattsburgh.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Nice turnout (over 800) at the UMB/Norwich Pink Game. The game honored Katherine Wall, former Beacon, who passed away from breast cancer last year.

I don't think anyone is stopping the big red machine this year...and who knows when they will. Their best two players are sophomores.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

I said the same thing to someone tonight at the arena. The other 7 teams in the NCAA tournament are going to find themselves playing for second place.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

I know reading is hard, however...I said "I've known several boys that are on hockey teams..." I have never met a girl that plays hockey.

Its also really simple: Kaliya Johnson attended the North American Hockey Academy....didn't play hockey in AZ...her family had to send her across the country.
Makenna Newkirk attended Pomfret School in Connecticut to play hockey...didn't play in Arizona...her family had to send her across the country
Amanda Martin went to NAHA...didn't play in Arizona.

It appears Katherin McGovern graduated in Arizona...but played for Colorado Selects.

There aren't the opportunities for girls in AZ as there are for the boys, which was my original point. Girls that have any talent have to leave home.

Arizona has the "Lady Coyotes" but I can't find much after that.

I can read fine. What you wrote is "The Men's league can handle the large number of teams because of the nationwide hockey programs. Even teaching in Arizona, I've known several boys that are on hockey teams and now play in the juniors. That doesn't happen with girls in AZ.". These four girls played hockey in Arizona, went to play hockey in what is effectively Juniors for girls - NAHA, Team Pittsburgh (who Newkirk really played for), Colorado Selects - and now play college hockey. Apparently it does happen for girls in AZ. Perhaps you should read what you wrote from time to time.

I stand corrected. Wealthy girls whose parents can afford to ship them across the country and don't mind never seeing their child do have those opportunities. Your standard 14 year old Arizona girl...does not.

While I think it's admirable for what's left of the team to 'not quit', getting outshot 193-10 and out scored 30-0 is not playing hockey! That is survival for 60 minutes, nothing more! Look at their previous games way too many 10+ goal losses. It's not a matter of safety it's a matter of integrity. Next year go play ACHA and regroup

Likely the girls will not stop playing because they have desire and commitment and the coach will not stop them because he is getting paid, which is why a responsible adult like the Athletic Director needs to step in and shut this fiasco down before a serious injury occurs. Getting shellacked 10-15 to nothing every game and outshot in the 100 shot range is not hockey nor a measure of integrity/commitment. It is just stupid. This program never should have started this season and the AD should be fired for allowing it continue. Mostly, it is an embarrassment to the college that it is being allowed to continue not because they are losing big but because they can barely field enough players and safety is a serious issue. As a youth coach, I cancelled games where we had less than 8-10 players (increased as the kids got older) because of safety issues. For a college team to regularly take the ice with 6-8 skaters is simply not acceptable under any circumstances. It shows a wanton disregard for their student/athletes.

This is my only beef right here. They're skating 6, with 1 goaltender. You literally have one player on the bench. You can't play hockey like that at this level. The scores and shot totals will happen from time to time with a first year program. That will improve with time, assuming this program survives. If they had, say, 10 skaters and a couple goaltenders, enough for a decent line change and a backup goaltender, I wouldn't be saying a word. This is like playing college football with 14 players on the roster.

I even brought this up with our AD at one of our men's games this weekend. I showed him the box score of Friday night's game and how many they dressed. The gist of his reaction, paraphrasing: "No way. You can't let that happen."
