D3 Hockey is back!

Let's be clear about another thing. Plattsburgh would not beat many D1 teams at all and if you think otherwise you haven't watched enough D1 and D3 women's hockey games. I was at the D3 championship weekend not too many years ago after I had just been at a D1 regular season game that involved a low end D1 team that didn't make their conference playoffs. The low end D1 team was much faster and more skilled than any of the 4 teams in the D3 championships. It was striking how much slower the D3 games were. Once you see it in person you'll know the reality of how different the two levels are.

Im sure the top DIII mens teams couldn't compete with DI teams either....I forgot, you're the expert.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Houle runs his Plattsburgh program like a D1 program (as much as is possible). That's one of the reasons he's so successful. There's no point in wasting time debating D1 vs. DIII. Just suffice it to say that Plattsburgh has an excellent program that challenges the athletes as much as possible, year in and year out. And the results are in the championships.

Running a program like it is D1 doesn't make you a D1 program - just ask Union (and yes despite their failures they DO run the program like D1). You have to have D1 level athletes. Plattsburgh doesn't (also like Union, unfortunately). They are the best D3 program. They wouldn't be competitive at the D1 level.

Says you. We'll never know will we.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

I'm surprised the Elmira-Williams game didn't get more attention. Williams plays them even with several players missing due to injury and has a chance to tie on a penalty shot in the last 2 minutes. I'm starting to think Williams may be a factor this season.

Agreed....Williams is a tough team to figure out...Seem to play up or down to the competition level of their opponent. Scoring is an issue but goaltending is excellent. They will be a tough out come playoff time.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Adrian 2
Stevenson 1

End 1

Shots are 15-5 Adrian, per the scoreboard. Stevenson got their goal on a perfect shot on the PP, tucked in off the post.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

7-1 after 2

Shots are 27-7 Adrian. Very indicative of the game so far.

As expected....Stevenson is a very average team playing in a very, very weak Conf. Now that they are playing a strong team, their true colors are showing...and yet the coach keeps voting for them to be top 10 every week (there's that 1 vote)...LOL's

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Yikes - Candace and Matt are wondering why Stevenson isn't getting any national poll votes. .... If Stevenson beats Adrian in January, bring it back up - I still won't agree but at least they will have a real win under their belt. Frankly, when I look at Stevenson's schedule aside from Adrian, they SHOULD run the table.

They also suggested that Hamline is a candidate for the top ten. They lost to WRF 8-0!! And to Concordia who is under .500. And tied St Olaf who is winless. Come on!!!

Just saying....

Adrian 8, Stevenson 1
Hamline is 5-4-2 (which is better than I thought they'd be)

Sure....top ten...

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

I had a sneaking suspicion that I was going to witness something like this tonight.

From what I saw tonight, Stevenson is not a top 10 team. They've got a ways to go before we can have that conversation. They've got one line with two nice scorers: Blackburn and Capanelli. Those two played well. The rest of the team....well, they've got some work to do.

Stevenson generated maybe a half-dozen quality chances tonight. They popped one of them on the power play, on a shot off the inside of the post, perfectly placed. They had maybe 2 more prime opportunities....and that's it. Other than those chances, they did very little to carry the play with the puck, and did not pressure Adrian much at all.

Adrian got two quick ones early on, and outside of the PP goal they gave up, it all went Adrian's way. The box score shows that shots on goal wound up 45-14, even though the scoreboard said 33-13. Obviously someone else keeps the official totals. 45-14 is far more indicative of how the game went, and I'm not really sure it was that close.

P.S. NEC trouced Daniel Webster 10-1 tonight and outshot them 67-5. Not a good night for the Colonial League. As they get the AQ, that league may develop, much like the MCHA/NCHA did on the men's side. Time will tell. But they've got a ways to go to get to that right now.

Daniel Webster had six skaters tonight...six.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Holy ****. I didn't even look that far down the box score.

They only have 7 skaters on the roster. You can't be fielding teams like that. That's ridiculous.

In my opinion the school administration needs to step in and cancel the rest of the season. That's not healthy for those players.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

That's exactly what I was thinking. I can't believe they let this thing get off the ground like this in the first place. I've seen teams with 10 skaters, and that's just about the lower limit. Anything less than that and you're flat-out endangering people. Where the hell is the AD in all of this? Who thought this was a good idea to start like this?

If I'm reading that box score correctly, they only dressed one goaltender? The others aren't even listed as "DNP". You have six skaters in uniform. Suppose that goaltender tweaks a hamstring 8 minutes into the game and has to come out. NOW what?

I knew a new program or two had numbers issues. I hadn't paid too much attention, so I had no idea it was this bad. This is absurd. The injury risk in this game is high enough at it is. This is just reckless.

Quick aside here: Before tonight, the worst numbers issue I had witnessed in person was last year, when Adrian's ACHA D-1 women's team played a school from Pennsylvania. They brought 1 goaltender and 10 skaters, one of which managed to leave her helmet in Pennsylvania. They then proceeded to hit their own goaltender somewhere in the neck area with a wrist shot during warm-ups. By the grace of God, she was okay and able to play that weekend, but I just sat there and shook my head at that whole debacle.

No, top D3 men's teams couldn't!!!

Seriously Cards fans, you are not a D1 team, if you were than your players would be in D1. Perhaps HE33 is right and in years past you might have been able to beat the middle of the pack D1 schools but not this year. Your 1st line is a good D1 3rd line.

Funny, they have. See how much you know lol.

While the following may not qualify as "Miracles" on ice, perhaps.. Benedictions?.. but you gotta admit they did raise some eyebrows. I know and fully understand these were exhibition games, MUCH different from 'real' games.. but still...(cue Jim Mora "Playoff" rant)

ASU C-L-U-B team (3) PSU D1 (1) 2012

Wisconsin Men (3) St Norbert (3) 2014 ...Badgers salvaged the tie with late goal

Toronto Aeros (2) OSU Women (1) 2013
