D3 Hockey is back!

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

While the following may not qualify as "Miracles" on ice, perhaps.. Benedictions?.. but you gotta admit they did raise some eyebrows. I know and fully understand these were exhibition games, MUCH different from 'real' games.. but still...(cue Jim Mora "Playoff" rant)

ASU C-L-U-B team (3) PSU D1 (1) 2012

Wisconsin Men (3) St Norbert (3) 2014 ...Badgers salvaged the tie with late goal

Toronto Aeros (2) OSU Women (1) 2013

I'm pretty sure times have changed, but back in the 80's many good D3 Men's teams would routinely give the D-1 boys [and not the scrubs either] a dose of Humble Pie.

Not even on the winning side of things, but the Norwich men have held their own recently against Dartmouth. Princeton has also had it's hands full with DIII teams. DI RIT has also lost to DIII Oswego at Ritter. The USDT (who plays and beats Dai teams) also finds itself on the losing end of DIII teams. Carleton, a team Plattsburgh didn't have a lot of trouble with, shouldn't have even been in the same rink as St . Lawrence only losing by 2 goals based on the experts analysis on here.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Seems like we talked about this on the men's side a year or two ago. The cream of the D-3 crop can certainly beat the bottom of D-1. Wisconsin was abysmal last year. Like, among the worst teams UW has ever had. They were 4-26-5 and scored 59 goals in 35 games. Props to SNC all the same. Same thing with Adrian winning at Huntsville 2 years ago.

I suppose my point is this. The top of D-3 can run with the bottom half of D-1 on any given night, in a one-off game. But over the course of a 34 game NCAA D-1 schedule, the lack of D-1 depth is going to catch up to the D-3 schools, and they would end up towards the tail end of the standings by March. At the bottom? No. But far closer to the bottom than the top.

I would have loved to see the Foresters take out Middlebury...at least they didn't lose to St. Mikes!!

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Adrian beat Manhattanville 10-0 in a game that wasn't as competitive as the score indicated.

Tonight's game was officiated by three women. Maybe (probably) my ignorance (and God knows there's plenty of that), but that's the first time I've noticed an all female crew officiating a game here at the D-3 level. They did a nice, professional job. Some of the better work I've seen from officials here over the years. If all our games got officiated like that, I probably wouldn't say another word about officials for a long time.

According to the list of scheduled games on collegehockeystats.net the Cortland at Daniel Webster game today has been cancelled. Probably a good thing for the safety of the DW players. Cortland beat them yesterday 10-0 and outshot them 74-8. DW played with 6 skaters and one goalie. This could be the end of it for DW this season and that would be for the best for everyone.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

I really, really hate going here, but at what point does the NCAA step on here and say enough is enough?

What the scoreboard says at the end of the game is secondary here. This is a player safety issue here. This is two games in a row that DW has gone with 6 + a goalie. This can't go on any further. There's only 7 skaters on the roster in the first place.

This game was listed as "canceled" earlier in the week, long before Friday night's debacle. Also goes along with last week's canceled game vs. New England. Wonder what the deal is. Seems a little crazy for Cortland to drive all the way out there for a single non-competitive nonconference game.

I thought they were required to have two goalies...

I thought so, too. There's two on the roster. Only one has dressed the last two games, if we're both reading the box scores correctly.

EDIT: Up until the last two games, they've dressed 9 skaters with 3 goaltenders. But when I look at the roster now, there's only 9 players listed, and 2 of them are goaltenders.

St. Olaf 1 Adrian 5

So much for Stevenson earning any top 10 poll votes. Their schedule is one of the weakest in D3 hockey. Adrian and Augsburg are the only decent teams they'll face and they're 0 and 2 heading into tomorrow's 2nd game at Augsburg.

Stevenson's schedule before the Adrian game was one of the weakest in D3. I believe their opponents had a combined 10 wins prior to that.

Hey Prez, we're in agreement about something again. Happy New Year! Lol.

I posted once before that I feel this is the weakest season overall in D3 hockey with all these new programs. I guess it's part of growing the game with the hopes that all these programs can become competitive someday. When a team like Chatham sweeps a new team like Morrisville it says a lot about that new league. There are players on many of those teams that wouldn't be considered for a position on most established teams so that's nice for those players that they have the opportunity to play D3 hockey for maybe a couple of years before they get recruited out of their spots. I also mentioned before some of the very soft schedules out there this year like Stevenson's, Buffalo's, and several others. When you beat teams that you're supposed to beat you haven't accomplished anything but I suppose it makes the players feel good anyway. I think I also said before I have much more respect for teams like Castleton that are challenging themselves with harder out of conference opponents. How else can you see where you stand if you don't try to play the traditionally better teams?!

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

If it helps more girls get out there and compete, then go for it. Just make sure these teams aren't ending up like Daniel Webster this year and trotting out a roster in the single digits.

This is Division III hockey. There's not much of a next level at all to speak of, so if it gives the girls a couple more years of playing the game they love at a (reasonably) competitive level, then I don't see a drawback here.

...and we saw the Saturday Adrian game, same 3 officials, and it might have been one of the worst officiating jobs I've seen all year. Uneven handling of contact (just be consistent with what you allow), inability to get to blue lines to make simple offsides calls, and allowing the players to openly laugh at them after calls.

On a hockey note, Adrian is very impressive with a very strong first line. Best team the Oles have played all year.

I was beaten to the punch. Agree with every word. What we saw was poor. A complete 180 from the night before.

What's happening in Manhattanville? They used to be VERY competitive?

I don't know. Friday's game was an absolute disaster. St Olaf got their first win over a winless Finlandia on Friday afternoon, and gave us a far better game on Saturday than what Manhattanville showed us the night before. I figured it would be the other way around.
