MONTREAL – The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team played the second game of the Theresa Humes Tournament Sunday night against University of Ottawa knocking off the Gee-Gees 4-2.

Ottawa would jump out to an early 2-0 lead converting on two power play goals. First was Cynthia Whissell deflecting a shot by Vicki Lermie from the left point by Cardinals goaltender Camille Leonard. The goal also came via a tip-in when Camille Pauck-Therrien fired a shot from inside the right circle that was deflected out of the air by Marimee Godbout-Parent and by the shoulder of Leonard.

The Cardinals would get on the board 8:21 into the second period to cut the Gee-Gees lead to 2-1. Giovanna Senese would receive the puck behind the net from Melissa Sheeran before throwing the puck into the slot to an open Kayla Meneghin for the one-timer,

Erin Brand would find the equalizer with five minutes remaining in the second period capitalizing on the power play. Brand received a cross ice pass from Bridget Balisy before dekeing the top defender and coasting into the slot for a backhander over the glove of Gee-Gees' goalie Sarah-Maude Labrecque.

With a power play carrying over into the beginning of the third period, the Cardinals would gather a 3-2 lead. Melissa Ames was stationed far post when she recived a cross ice pass from the right circle by Jordan Lipson for an easy tap-in.

Meneghin would provide the dagger with 44 seconds left in the game when she sunk an empty netter from the Cardinals own defensive zone.

Leonard played an outstanding game in net. After giving up two early goals she stifled the rest of the Gee-Gees' chances including numerous breakaways and odd man rushes. Her counterpart Labrecque made 49 saves on 52 shots for Ottawa.

Despite being down 2-0 and outshot 11-4 midway through the first, Plattsburgh State would dominate a 49-13 shot advantage and score four unanswered.

The two teams combined for 18 penalties, the Cardinals taking 10. Ottawa would start the game 2-3 on the man advantage before going 0-7 done the stretch. Plattsburgh State finished 2-8 on the power play.

The Cardinals will return to the ice tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. to wrap up their Theresa Humes Tournament against host Concordia University.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

If you go back a few pages through the "slop" you'll find more details but each school is allowed 1 international trip every 5 years during a break (preseason, postseason or holiday breaks) that does not count toward your 25 game limit. Key words are international and breaks....

It's actually once every four years.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

I'm surprised the Elmira-Williams game didn't get more attention. Williams plays them even with several players missing due to injury and has a chance to tie on a penalty shot in the last 2 minutes. I'm starting to think Williams may be a factor this season.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Plattsburgh is shut out by Concordia 3-0. They haven't been shut out since January 7, 2014 against Elmira and prior to that February 9, 2011 to Middlebury.

Concordia has outscored their opponents 20-0 during the Theresa Humes tournament.

Thought they'd be in tough. Concordia is a regular in the Canadian
National Championship scene. Good showing though for Plattsburgh. They can take this momentum back to the regular schedule. I'm always impressed that Coach Houle lines up tough opponents for his teams every year. Well done.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

That's some **** fine competition if they can do that to Plattsburgh.

Stevenson at Adrian on Wednesday night. I may have some thoughts after that one.

They are the equivalent of middle of the pack D1 teams. To go 2-1 in a Canadian Tournament is very respectful. Concordia outscored their other two opponents by a combined score of 17-0 and Plattsburgh held them to 3 ! I believe the third was an ENG.

With all due respect to both Plattsburgh and Concordia, I think that most "middle of the pack" D1 teams would beat Plattsburgh a lot more soundly than 3-0 (not the Union and Brown's of the world, but real middle of the pack D1 teams). As a reference point, Plattsburgh regularly has 1 or 2 D1 transfers who were marginal players at the D1 level but are one of if not their best player (Sidney Aveson, Ali Vakos, Erin Brand). The days when good D3 teams could compete with middle of the pack D1 teams are long gone...

Concordia looked really strong! But remember this is exhibition and coaches use this to try different things. Plattsburgh's freshman goalie did a good job against Concordia!

Cardinals Suffer 3-0 Setback to Concordia in the Theresa Humes Finale

Kassi Abbott made her second-career start for the Cardinals making a game-high 26 saves.

MONTREAL – The Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team concluded the Theresa Humes Tournament Monday against host school Concordia, dropping a 3-0 contest to the Stingers.

Concordia would strike with 7:49 remaining in the first period after Ann-Julie Deschenes raced down the left boards passing it to the trailer Keriann Schofield in the slot. Schofield would send a wristed over the glove of freshman goaltender Kassie Abbott for a 1-0 lead.

The Stingers would make it 2-0 with just 20 seconds left in the first period on the power play. Tracy-Ann Lavigne jammed a backhander under a sprawled out Abbott for the tally.

The second period would go quietly as both teams struggled to create constant pressure and quality scoring chances.

Claudia Dubious would be on the receiving end of nice tic-tac-toe passing that occurred on a three on one rush. First Schofield lugged the puck down the right hand boards before dropping it back to Devon Thompson who would then slid it across to Dubious on the left side of the crease for a one-timer past Abbott.

Plattsburgh State finished the afternoon 0-5 on the power play while picking up eight penalties of its own. In the three games, the Cardinals took a total of 25 penalties.

Abbott would make 26 saves on 29 shots for the Cardinals while Conordia goalie Briar Bache finished with a 23-shot shutout.

The Cardinals finished the tournament with a 2-1 record and will return to the ice on Tuesday, January 12th at the Stafford Ice Arena to take on No. 8 Middlebury.

I agree, Plattsburgh beat Carleton 3-1 but Union earlier beat them 6-1.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Not to insult Kassie Abbott but I can't help but wonder how Plattsburgh would have done if their normal starter Leonard had played instead...

Then ranked St . Lawrence only beat them by 2 goals as well...current #5 Clarkson should have had an easier time with McGill then just a 4-1 win...

No one is saying Plattsburgh would go on and sweep the Division I crown, or have a winning record playing against Nationally ranked teams, but they would hold their own (not getting blown out night after night like some DI school). Plattsburgh is not your average DIII school.

No offense, but you're dreaming and living in the world of 5 to 10 years ago. Plattsburgh is indeed the top D3 school in the country in women's ice hockey - hard to argue. But they would not hold their own night after night against D1 teams - they would lose all or nearly all games and the majority would be blowouts. Against the bottom quarter they would be able to hold their own but even there they wouldn't win any more than VERY occasionally against the Union, Brown, and RITs of the world. Some of their best players were at best marginal D1 players at bottom quarter D1 schools - it is not a criticism of them but a reality - they would not be able to hang with D1 teams with their current roster.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Final 2-1 Middlebury over Lake Forest - be interesting to hear the Westerner's take on this one. LF outplayed Middlebury in the first, but Middlebury clearly outplayed LF in the second and third (final shots 34-21 and were 24-11 in the last 2 periods). Game winner was a juicy rebound left sitting in front with an unattended Middlebury player banging it home - LF goalie did a pretty good job but this was the one I'm sure she wants back. LF had their chances in the last minute but couldn't finish - they took 3 bad/mindless penalties in the last 10 minutes to really shoot themselves in the foot. Katie Mandigo took an open ice elbow to the head in the middle of the third (clearly intentional as the LF girl skated by her) that went uncalled and she left the game and didn't return - hope she is OK, but she looked very unsteady leaving the ice. For a change, Coach Mandigo had every right to scream at the officials on this one. Will be a tough one for Middlebury if she can't play this weekend against Amherst.

I candidly didn't see Greeneway as a standout player in this game - was definitely expecting more based on the hype and stats. I thought Lake Forest was well-coached and organized, but they really wore down as the game went on - combination I suspect of a long trip and only 4 defensemen. They may be the best the NCHA has to offer (based on the current standings and recent NCAA appearances), but color me not that impressed after this performance against a weaker than usual Middlebury team missing their best defenseman Carly Watson to a season ending injury.

I was shocked to hear that Middlebury still hasn't played an away game this season - 8 at home to start. 3 away, then 4 at home. So 11 of the first 15 games at home. How do they pull that off?

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

4 defensemen from LFC, eh? That's interesting.

I haven't seen LFC this year. They come to Adrian for two on the last weekend of the season, very likely to decide the NCHA championship. They beat Adrian 6-2 earlier this year at Lake Forest, a game that featured an ENG and a penalty shot goal.

We've been through this debate for years. Your commentary is nothing more than speculation and opinion. And that's fine. There's no way of proving it now, just as it was in the past. Houle runs his Plattsburgh program like a D1 program (as much as is possible). That's one of the reasons he's so successful. There's no point in wasting time debating D1 vs. DIII. Just suffice it to say that Plattsburgh has an excellent program that challenges the athletes as much as possible, year in and year out. And the results are in the championships.

Lets be clear on something here. Over the 3 games of this tournament the Cards played well in only 1 game. The cards were slow to come out against Carleton but once they got going Carleton was done. The Ottawa game was a bit of the same where the GeeGee's got a good bounce and then a soft goal to go up 2-0. Then the Cards bore down and the GeeGee were done. That was the Cards strongest game. The Concordia game, the cards played totally flat. Nothing was working. It wasn't the freshman goalie it was just a flat performance. Everyone has them. But I find it hard to believe that Concordia team is ranked high. Even their own fans don't see the team as really tough to beat.
