D3 Hockey is back!

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

THEY CAN'T...Now if you are a D3 school...all of your programs have to go D1 if one does. RIT I believe was the last one under the old rules.

Didn't RIT use the Title IX argument that since the men play up they should be allowed to?

How does the CIS compare to NCAA Division 1? Are the teams made up of players who couldn't get a D1 offer and decided to forego D3 to stay home?

A lot of people feel the CIS is sort of like a D2 league. Definitely does not compare to D1 overall but probably better than D3 mostly. Obviously there are exceptions comparing school to school but overall that's probably about right.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Okay, now I have a question.

I know that Plattsburgh isn't dumb enough to blow right past the 25-game limit by doing this, so these games have to be exempt from the limit. I also know that usually you get 1 exemption per year against foreign competition (paraphrasing there). Is this covered under the 4-year international trip rule? I'm sure Platty is in the clear here. I'm operating under the (safe) assumption that they've long since cleared this with the NCAA.

I'm just curious as to what I'm missing in the rule book on this, because there's 29 games on their schedule as we sit here tonight (25 regular season, the opener against Dawson, and these three).

Memory serving me correctly you are allowed 1 international trip every graduating cycle of which must be played during break or preseason. Those games do not count against your record/game numbers. Utica did this a few years back on the men's side and the Cardinal women did it a few years back as well. The difference here is playing IN Canada and not playing a team here in the States.

After I typed that, that did occur to me. That has to be it. Our boys did that 5-6 years ago in Finland over semester break.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Amherst over Norwich - 3-2 OT but the shots way in favor of Amherst . Amherst is starting to look like the real deal this season.

47 shots against Norwich. Platt only managed 35 and Elmira 34 against the Cadets. Hhmmm. Gonna keep my eye on this hockey club from Amherst.

The shots definitely jumped off the page to me. I can't remember the last time Norwich has ever given up that many. Probably in 2009-10 or earlier.

the Jeffs are a very good team [probably should be in top 5...better than Middlebury]...However, the Defense is a bit suspect IMO...they rely heavily on Dobbins in goal...if she ever has an off day against a good offensive team it could be a serious problem...they give up several "grade A" scoring chances every game.

Plattsburgh dropped 49 shots on them when they drubbed Norwich in the 2014 NCAA Championship game 9-2.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

I watched most of the Norwich-Amherst game last evening. The disparity in shots possibly reflects the students keeping the stats. The announcers seemed to question the shot totals throughout the game. The Amherst D are fond of blazing away from long range while Norwich D are decidedly less so. It also seemed Amherst forwards were able to block a number of shots. The game saw several swings in momentum and was way closer than the shots indicate. I had not watched Norwich since their East/West debacle and they are vastly improved. I think we all have seriously under estimated Amherst this season. While they have yet to face Williams or Middlebury, going 4-0 on Conn and Trinity puts them in a positive position NESCAC standing-wise.

All good points [I think Amherst has a bit of a history when it comes to shot mis-counting I recall from some posts last year].

I think Middlebury will have trouble with Amherst...more physical, a bit faster and big advantage in net.

As for Williams...I think you may be vastly over-rating that team...They have played 2 of the nescac basement dwellers and done 'ok'...but I don't think they will finish the year in the top 4 in the conference....we will know more come January.

I understand Middlebury has inexperienced goalies (a collective 10 games to date), but they have a team .927 saves % through 6 games and have hardly been playing the Sisters of the Poor. You are not recruited to play goal for the Panthers if you are a sieve.
The January 8-9 Midd at Amherst games should be for conference hosting rights.
Williams schedule allows them time to gel. They play Conn, Trinity, Amherst and Middlebury after January 22 and get 6 of the 8 games in the friendly confines of Lansing-Chapman.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

Shocker of the Weekend:

Friday Night:

ST. Bens 2 Gustavus 2

Saturday

St. Bens 3 Gustavus 2

In both games, St Bens tied it up late with the extra attacker.

What's going on in Gustie land? First a tie to Augsburg and now this with St. Bens? Not that I'm sad to see the Gusties suck, but wow.

I don't think you're alone in that sentiment. They are the type of program you love to hate.

One broken neck
One broken leg
One separated shoulder
Four concussions
One funeral

I know, I know, good teams find ways to win. Don't be a hater.

Re: D3 Hockey is back!

"No. 10 Castleton at No. 5 Middlebury
Candace: One of the best matchups of the weekend. I like home ice. Middlebury 4-3
Matt: A potential NCAA tournament game in a few months? You bet. The early preview here has Middlebury coming out on top, which may or may not happen down the road. Middlebury 3-1"

Interesting take on this matchup...for some reason, I can't see Castleton staying close to Middlebury this weekend. They were badly outshot [more than 2 to 1] in their game vs Williams...I could see Midd winning this one by 3-4 goals.
