D3 Game Updates 2012-13

Re: D3 Game Updates 2012-13

Nice goal by Steadman to put Elmira up 1-0; took her time, moved a bit to her right and found the opening.

Re: D3 Game Updates 2012-13

How crazy will it be if Elmira wins this??

Not crazy at all. They have been lurking behind Platty all year in the ECAC west. They played a strong SOS, and that appears to have them prepared well. Don't let their record fool you. They have 5 losses, but they are 3 against Platty and 2 against Middlebury, the other two medalists in D3. They have not lost to anyone else.

Congrats Purple Eagles. Second team to get a third championship, matching Middlebury, the team they beat in the final.

IMHO Sullivan MVP of this tourney.

Sullivan was awesome in goal for Elmira. Congratulations to Coach Jackson, the Elmira players and fans!
Jones played a great game in net for the Panthers, but just not enough offense,

Congrats to Elmira!! Way to go!! :) Congrats to Lauren for a fantastic game and a nation leading 11th shutout!! I can honestly say that I'm a proud Elmira supporter.

Agreed on Jones. Elmira had many chances to increase the lead, and she stoned 'em all. With her in-net for a few more years, Midd will continue to be a top team.

Amazing run for Elmira; well deserved from the goalie out. 5-4...if you're out there....happy tonight? ;)

I saw 5-4 tonight. Happy is good descriptor, but pride and love and joy and jubilation and admiration, fit too.

Anybody who disregards D3 hockey is missing out. It was a terrific game and a terrific story of the 4th seed coming into this tourney working and working and working to get right to the top with lots of help from a goalie that could play D1, any day. Congrats Soaring Eagles! My 2013-14 season just got more complicated having to follow another Division.

I saw a few players in the D3 games yesterday that imo could play D1. Teal Gove could contribute to a lot of D1 teams. GA has some talent too. I'm always confused as to why some great talent ends up in D3 and Benders in D1? Hopefully it's the education.

Knowing many DI and DIII players and talking to all of them over the years, the prevailing theory is that playing a DI sport is a unique opportunity but it completely dominates the player's college experience. DIII seems to provide a much better balance between sports and everything else about college that we all seem to enjoy so much. Also, most of the DI players I know who went on to advanced degrees had to take a fifth year to get through their curriculum. Lastly, most of the girls I know who were good enough to play DI had a pretty realistic assessment of themselves. Being a star at DIII is far more appealing to them than being a 3rd or 4th liner on a DI team. Being a fringe DI player just for the sake of playing DI is not all its cracked up to be. I don't know Platty's Kistner but I'll bet she'd be a great one to talk to about this.

There is also the financial factor to consider. The 3rd or 4th liners may not get an attractive enough scholarship offer, that weighs into their decision.

I know a few girls and honestly the biggest factor for them was that they wanted to play. They would rather go to a D3 school and be on the first line or a starting goalie for 4 years rather than go to a D1 school and get partial playing time every year. I think most girls these days (the ones who aren't good enough for the Olympic teams) are realizing that they only have 4 solid years of competitive hockey left and that they just want to play. Winning a D3 championship is a lot more appetizing than being on a bottom feeder D1 team.

Re: D3 Game Updates 2012-13

The last bunch of posts are spot on. This is the time of the year that D1 coaches are trolling for payers/Players and paying over $30k to be a prac player on a D1 versus decent fin aid and contributing at a good D3 private/state school is a tough call.

Re: D3 Game Updates 2012-13

The D1 vs D3 conversation has been discussed at length on these boards and all points above certainly worth remembering. The message I was trying to convey was that I incorrectly assessed a value of D1 being better hockey than D3. And while skills and speed wise you could certainly make that argument, the tournament this weekend showed me a lot of things. 1. The gap between D1 and the D3 teams at the tourney is certainly not as big as it used to be. 2. These girls play with as much commitment, heart, passion and intensity as D1'ers. and 3. It all matters. Neither is better than the other. Seeing the team you're backing raise the trophy, seeing their friends and family burst with pride... the feeling is the same across Divisions and should be equally appreciated and respected.
